Well, they sure have hurt the O's the last 2 games with the pair of 1-run wins. O's really need to win the game today because a 7 game deficit is going to be a struggle for a team that just hasn't been able to put winning streaks together. Gotta hand it to the NYY's and their version of the Bash Brothers. I sure didn't expect them to put this kind of year together. -- Al
O's in the hole 4-0 after 1st inning. Ugly 1st for Umbaldo, but the comeback starts as Davis goes deep leading off the 2nd to make it 4-1. Too bad Umbaldo grooved one to Ellsbury leading off the bottom of the 2nd to give the run right back. -- Al

Dreamboat actually hit a home run?

What did the MFY's do, let him use Bucking #$%^ing Dent's corked bat (actually, to be fair to Bucky #$%^ing Dent, it was Mickey Rivers corked bat, not his).

Stick a fork in the AL East, it's all over; the only team with a shot of catching the MFY's was Baltimore, but after this series, adios to that.

Going to be fun watching the MLB playoffs so I can root against the MFY's again, when was the last time they were in the playoffs anyway, during the Nixon administration?

Actually, the NYY's totally missed the playoffs during Nixon's administrations. They did make them while Ford was in office.:wink2: -- Al

Unless Nixon came back from the grave and served in the 2000s.

Mrs. Greinke gave the Mets a gift: she's delivering so Zach is away with the Missus.

Don't hold back George, tell us how you really feel!{sm4} I love your sense of humor George!

Here's one for you: I was at a charity event, where my kids got to do drills and learn from several former MLB players, including hall of famer Rollie Fingers, great Detroit Tigers slugger Darrell Evans, Detroit Tigers Pitcher Jon Warden, Big Red Machine great George Foster, former Yankee Catcher Jim "the King" Leyritz, and Texas Ranger alumni Frank Catalanatto. Of course I bought a bunch of raffle tickets, never figuring I'd win anything, just to help out. What do I win: a baseball autographed by Mike Torres. So that evening, at the charity dinner, I bid a couple of hundred bucks on the silent auction, and win a baseball autographed by Bucky Dent. So who shows up at the dinner? You guessed it George, Mick the Quick, so my wife gets him to autograph a ball (she got autographs from every player there, and was playfully flirting with Jon Warden, who, like me, has a thing for red heads - thankfully he's well into his 70's). So now my son, who has my Willie Mays autograph (met him when I was a kid, with my grandfather, who was an usher at both the Polo Grounds and Yankee Stadium, nicest guy in the world, spent 20 minutes talking to me), and autographed photos of Edward Whitey Ford and Graig Nettles, has, on his dresser, balls autographed by Mike Torres, who threw the pitch, Bucky Dent, who hit the homer, and Mickey Rivers, who gave Dent the (corked?) bat!^&grin

Oh yeah right, the 2000s; three trips to the WS, one title, 2009, when ARoid carried them on his muscle bound, steroid fueled shoulders to a title vs the power house Phillies.

How could I forget those glory years in MFY history.

It was a corked bat; Rivers said so and he was known for using one.

How else would that punch and Judy tomato can Dent hit a home run; that ball basically bounced off the top of the monster, one of if not THE cheapest home run ever hit at Fenway.

And Dent has made a living off of it since.

So he's got that going for him, which is nice.

Great story, Louis. Poor old Mike Torres. His 18 year career spans 3 decades with 7 teams, goes 185-160 with a 3.96 ERA, wins 2 games in the '77 series for the champion Yanks and all he is remembered for is throwing the Dent gopher ball.:rolleyes2: -- Al

It was an ugly series for the O's, small doubt about that. It is starting to get a little late for this continual lack of consistency. With 68 games left, the O's have to go 44-24 just to get to 90 wins, the number which I think will take the division. I don't see it happening unless someone lights a fire under the O's butts and gets them moving. It would seem, at this point, that .500 might be more realistic. They are not winning the close games that they did last year and, most importantly, their starting pitching hasn't been able to repeat their performance from last year. -- Al

It does seem that Clayton Kershaw has decided make a late run and challenge Greinke for the Cy Young. In his last 3 starts he has gone 3-0, and over the 26 innings has allowed 0 runs, 0 walks and has fanned 38. He now has a streak of 29 scoreless innings to match against Greinke's 43.2 innings. Hard to believe he was only 5-6 through the end of June. -- Al

Watched the game tonight on MLB network, wow was he lights out, complete game three hitter vs the Mets.

What a performance; not sure if he was dominant or the Mets have a AAA offense, but either way, he was impressive.

Al:

There are two sides of the Greinke/Kershaw one-two punch for me:

Giants fan: I hate it!

Baseball fan: Admire and appreciate it.

I'll take your word for it George, I admit it surprised me when Dent hit the homer. I had to leave the house to got to work, and was riding my bike with a transistor radio hanging from the handle bars listening to the game when he hit it out, and the announcers were surprised too. I almost crashed my bike celebrating. It was still a close run thing. Reggie's homer was the difference. One hell of a season. The Yankees had stunk on ice for so long, I didn't believe my Grandfather's stories about how great they had been before I was born, '76 through '80 was a nice little renaissance for a kid like me who, between the Yankees and (football) Giants, had seen nothing but losing up to that point.

Oh, and George, the Yankees have only missed the playoffs three times (2008, 2013, 2014) since 1995, so I'm not that worried about it, I've been pretty spoiled in my adult life as a Yankee fan.:wink2:

Thanks for the stroll down memory lane; years of therapy helped me forget, now you've brought it all back to me front and center. I'll have to find that shrink and get my money back....................

Actually, 2004 erased 1978, 1986 and 1975 all in one shot; when I rank the Boston sports championships, the Red Sox 2004 WS title was, still and always will be #1 on the hit parade.

Nothing from this point forward will ever replace that one, it's locked in with cement as #1 ("There's a ground ball stabbed by Foulke, he has it, underhands to first and for the first time in 86 years, the Boston Red Sox are World Series Champions"), followed closely by the 2002 Super Bowl, the 1970 Stanley Cup and the 2015 Super Bowl win vs Seattle, I'm still glowing over that one; "Three corners; MALCOLM GO!!"..........I get choked up just thinking about it, the rooms getting dusty right now as a matter of fact.

Those four are my Mount Rushmore of Boston Sports Championships.

Boston definitely got its revenge for 1978 in 2004. That was the most epic collapse any team I've ever routed for had. Up 3-0, with a 2 run lead going to the 8th inning of game 4, and one out, Big Poppi at the plate, and I just kept saying "walk him, don't pitch to him", knowing he was going to hit one out, and give the sox a big boost . . . now I need freakin' therapy!{sm2}

On the flip side of the Kershaw surge is the misfortune for Bartolo Colon of the Mets. His shutout loss to Kershaw is only the latest in his series of tough losses. In his last 8 starts, Colon is 1-6 with one ND. In those 6 losses and ND the Mets have been shutout 3 times (3-0, 3-0, 2-0), scored 1 run in 3 games and 2 runs once. The Mets have scored 5 runs for Colon in 7 starts. During this stretch Colon's record went from 8-3 to 9-9. As Brad pointed out several posts back, a team can have great pitching but it has to be able to score runs. Right now the Mets can't. They have been shutout 10 times this season and have also lost 4 games by 2-1 scores. Rough on their pitchers and rough on their fans. -- Al

Triple or Double AA offense but give Kershaw credit too. Before the game, the GM, Sandy Alderson, tried to defend the product, which is indefensible; Duda has reverted to form; last year must have been a fantasy. Fans have been calling for Michael Conforto, a top prospect to be called up, but Alderso pooh poohed that. However, with your cleanup hitter last night hitting .170 last night, what do you have lose. This might be the most wretched hitting team I've ever seen and, trust me, I've seen a few.

The basic problem -- I feel like a broken record -- is ownership and their Madoff liquidity problem. Until they somehow sell, this will be a chronic problem.
