O's walk off in the 11th with a Wieters Hr. Victory #3 in a row and the 4th game in a row with absolutely excellent starting pitching. Twice the starters have allowed 0 runs and only a total of 3 runs allowed in the 4 games, even if they only won 3 of them. It's great to see the starting pitching doing their job and hopefully (for the umpteenth time) it is the start of a surge. Back to .500 and hope is returning.:wink2: -- Al
O's on a tear, at last, fueled by Chris Davis. Good pitching and hitting together get it done every time. Problem is the NYY's keep winning. O's still 7 back even after winning 4 in a row. Just goes to show that digging out of a hole isn't an overnight thing and it is long term performance that wins. O's have 63 games left to establish themselves and if they stay hot I think they can still catch NY, but the O's have to at least play consistent good baseball for the 63 games. -- Al

Thanks to a superb pitching job by Tillman, the O's completed a sweep of the Braves tonight (the Nats send their thanks) to reach 5 wins in a row. Tillman, who was 2-7, won his 6th straight game to get to 8-7. He has done a fine job of turning his season around and providing an anchor for the O's pitching staff. Without his turnaround it is safe to say the O's would be toast by now. -- Al

The Rangers are getting Hamels according to multiple sources; seems like a strange move, are they even in contention for a wild card spot? I don't get this move; oh well, as long as it's not the MFY's, it's all good...................

Reports that it is a done deal, all part of an 8 player deal, 2 Phillies for 6 Rangers. -- Al

I can't figure out this move either? They gutted their farm system for one pitcher?

I had hoped the Giants would get him, but after seeing what the Rangers gave up I am glad they didn't.

Rumors flying that David Price is going to Toronto. My question is why aren't the O's going after someone like Price? He's a starter that can only help the O's solidify a hit or miss rotation but no mention of any interest at all. I don't get it, except the O's mind-set must be that they muddled through with the same rotation in 2014 so it will do for 2015. The O's NEED a #1 starter. -- Al

Wow, the Jays are going for it too, traded for the Colorado shortstop (nope, not going to attempt his last name) and now Price.

Their staff still stinks, they need another pitcher.................

The MFY's finally made a deal, they traded for some no name tomato can named Justin Ackley; a former number one draft pick who's left handed and has had little to no success at the big league level.

So he'll hit 15-20 home runs down the stretch at Williamsport East in the Bronx; sounds about right.

What happened with the Met's trying to get Gomez from the Brewers? It seems strange that it fell through over something medical? Don't teams know these things ahead of time?

The Mets didn't like the medicals on his hips. The deal was never announced, just rumored. When they saw the information, they backed out.

Also, he was not exactly setting the world on fire so he would have been an upgrade but not a huge one.

Brad:

As always, thanks for the info.

Do you think the Met's will still try and pick someone up?

There's a sneaking suspicion that this is a made up excuse by the Mets as both the Brewers and Boras said Gomez is fine. Didn't stop the Astros as they acquired Gomez.

Meanwhile, the closer blew his third straight save as Mets blow a 5 run lead. Great

Brad, I watched the end of that game. It was brutal, and I believe it was very much weather assisted. Mets got to within 1 strike of a 2-run win and the rain was coming down in a torrent. The umps let the game go on and then it was a 2-strike single, followed by another single, followed by the game winning 3-run Hr, all in that downpour. They had no business trying to finish that inning in rain like that. -- Al

I was thinking of going to the game today but one thing led to the other, etc. Thank goodness I didn't. I stopped paying attention when it was 6-1. Plus, I hate rain delays. This was a series they should have swept. Tsk, tsk.

I hear the NYY's are after SD's Craig Kimbrel, former Braves 'light's out' closer.
Meanwhile, the sports memorabilia market insanity continues unabated. Some results from an auction just held:
1952 Mickey Mantle baseball card - $382,400.00
1955 Roberto Clemente baseball card - $310,700.00
Mickey Mantle game worn jersey from 1966 season - $322,650.00
The neatest listing I saw was for a team baseball card circa 1859-61 for the Brooklyn Atlantics, champions of those years for the National Association of Baseball Players, the first organized baseball league. It was a card that had been in the same family since issued (family member on the team played outfield and is in the photo). Tough to sell family history like that but it went for $179,000.00.

I don't get the Kimbrel deal. They have Miller and Betances. I also don't get the Nats deal for Pabelbon. If I were Storen I'd be pretty upset.

Mets are "supposed" to be closing in on a deal for Jay Bruce.

Brad, the Papelbon deal has really stirred the pot here in DC. There are a lot of Nats fans that don't see the need and it certainly has upset Storen (who has been screwed as closer before) but he is maintaining a stoic silence on the subject, ie., being professional and doing his new job (8th inning set-up) to the best of his ability. Now having said that, Nats management knew the big hole in the team was the 7th/8th inning bridge to the closer. Storen had been outstanding as a set-up man in the past so management, knowing Storen could fill that role, found it easier to get a new closer than take a chance on another set-up man from outside the organization. It should work, at least to finish this season. Storen will probably search for other options once the season ends and I wouldn't blame him a bit. This whole bullpen mess was managements fault to start with when they traded Clippard away and left the bullpen without a set-up man. Storen has been a trooper through his trials here in DC, but this slap in the face could be the last straw for him. -- Al

O's just got the Brewer's Gerardo Parra to fill the OF hole. Great pickup for the O's as Parra is a true hitter and a good fielder. -- Al

In other news, the Brewers just called and are calling me up. I'll be the starting pitcher for the game on Saturday.

Good thing I had a no-trade clause. I might be the only one left on the team after today!

I hope they give you the week of OTSN off, the show won't be the same without you.

A few years ago, Pete saved my life as it was just me and my 85 year old Dad at the show and Pete graciously helped my hump all my merchandise from the hotel to my van; I might add the ramp is UPHILL, a very steep incline at that.

He was dog tired as was I, but he helped me nevertheless.

It's things like that I will never, ever forget..........................
