Giants lost a heartbreaker this morning in 14 innings. The Dodgers left 13 men on base and still won.

Bumgarner and Greinke tonight, should be a good one.

Nats lost a killer tonight in St.Loo. Fought back to take a 2 run lead in the top of the 7th only to see the Arsonists throw it all away in the bottom of the 7th. Once again our 7th inning bridge collapses and costs the Nats the game. It was a must win, on the road, to keep pace with the Mets and they blew it. I wouldn't be surprised if this loss is the one that breaks their back. Now 18-25 since the All-Star break. -- Al
This ugly loss is another one to lay at Williams feet. He mismanaged the bullpen, again, and the result is a critical loss. Williams seems unable to think outside of the box. If it works once, it will work again, and again, and again. Except when it doesn't. Last night Williams followed his standard 7th inning formula, which has often worked, but has also blown up several times. When the game was on the line, Williams stuck with a pitcher, Janssen, who wasn't getting the job done. The moment came when Storen could have been used to get the final out but Williams uses Storen for the 8th inning. It is against HIS rulebook to use Storen in the 7th, even with the game on the line. The pitcher that replaced Janssen, Rivero, has been effective but usually in low-pressure situations (as mop-up). Rivero promptly gave up a back-breaking double, emptying the bases. Game over. An inning the Nats entered leading 5-3, turned into a 5 run Cardinal rally and an 8-5 loss for the Nats. The second guessing of this inning is already in full bloom and Williams will be lucky to survive it. JMO. -- Al

I watched the latter part of that game via the Cardinals broadcast, which included Tim McCarver. They were second guessing Williams, especially when he didn't bring in a left hander to face Wong. The 7th has been a recurring problem for the Mets but if they need a third out, Terry won't hesitate to bring in Clippard to get that out and pitch in the 8th. Williams stayed too long with Rivero. I actually thought the game was over when they went up 5-3. Zimmerman's great night was wasted.

Speaking of McCarver, it was refreshing to hear him again. I will tune in again tonight to hear their broadcast.

Great observation, Brad, and my point exactly. Storen is better than any other bullpen option and he is certainly capable of getting 4 outs if needed, but it goes against what Williams is used to doing, thus it isn't an option. Narrow thinking and it will cost Williams his job. -- Al

Al,

I think this problem of narrow thinking is a prevalent problem in all of baseball. These rocket scientists managers have a formula that they all mimic. Case in point: on Sunday, the Mets are leading 4-3 with two outs. Now, I'm not going to say this is a must win but you don't want to get swept at home and be 0-6 so you should bring in your best guy, Clippard. No, Collins doesn't: he brings in Robles (who is very inconsistent) and bang it's 4-4. He then has to bring in Clippard who gets the out. I'm swearing at the TV.

Last night, Colon is pitching a beautiful game through 8 and hadn't thrown an excessive amount of pitches. He automatically goes to Familia (who has fallen in love with the splitter) and nearly costs them the game.

Sometimes, the way these guys think boggles the imagination.

Brad

P.S. When the Nats went up 5-3, I thought the game was over. For Nats fans, it must have been incredibly frustrating.

Brad,
I just don't get it. I know I'm old school as far as pitching goes, but for crying out load, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If the starter is cruising, let him be. It just drives me crazy.
As far as that 5-3 lead, I also thought we had it made, IF we could get past the 7th inning, a problem spot for the Nats all year. When it all went bye-bye in the 7th, I lit up the neighborhood with my colorful language. It was extremely frustrating, but not unexpected. It has become so predictable that it is just sad. -- Al

Luckily Bumgarner goes tonight, a win keeps them in it, a lose puts them on the verge of elimination.
Gonna be a classic. My prediction: SF beats LA 1-0 when Mad Bum hits a Hr in the 8th. ^&grin Let's hope so, anyway. -- Al

The baseball fan in me is excited about the pitcher's duel with Greinke. The Giants fan in me wishes it was against Brett Anderson.

Looks like a chance for Nats to pick up ground as Mets are down 5-0. This is not the bandbox they have in Philly and Phillies have to beat Mets sometime.

Mets got it to 6-4 and that moron manager brings in that ahole Parnell who just kills the inning. I never want to see that guy in a Mets uniform again

Brad, with the September call-ups, there should be other options than a guy with a 6.5 ERA. Sometimes you just gotta wonder. Tonight the Nats had a 4-0 lead with a pitcher that had only walked 11 guys in 67 innings, so naturally he couldn't find the plate but Williams stuck with him until the 6th walk in 2.2 innings and the lead was down to 4-3. Sometimes you gotta wonder what they are thinking. -- Al

I don't mind when my team loses, it is inevitable. But when it is at the hands of a bad managerial decision it's always harder to stomach.

Eagles beat the Jets tonight 14-8. Wait a second! They play Thursday. Oh, yeah, got that wrong. It was the Phillies beating the Mets.

It's deja vu all over again, dude. Nats once again had a 5-3 lead late, got to the 8th inning before giving up the tying runs this time and then the genius managerial move, again. Tied 5-5 in the bottom of the 9th, so who does Williams use but the guy that threw away last night's game, Janssen. And what happens? Janssen blows this game as well and the Nats lose by an identical 8-5 score. I'd laugh if this wasn't so sad. {sm2} -- Al

This is not a second guess because before the 9th started I said to myself why isn't Papelbon in there because this is a game they really need.

You have to hand it to the Cards. I doubt anyone will beat them on the way to another title. 40 games over 500 is incredible.

Same thing I thought, where was Papelbon? This crap is really tough to watch. One screw up after another. -- Al

It took the Cy Young front running candidate and a spectacular double play to do it, but the Dodgers beat Bumgarner. Either way, how they did it is irrelevant when it comes to the win column.

Hats off to the Dodgers, but I am still keeping hope alive. One game at a time, the playoffs for the Giants start now!

The Sox lost to the MFY's last night 3-1; Porcello looked great, whiffed 13, but his defense cost him two runs and old friend Drew gets a two out, two run single.

Awesome; Dreamboat, Drew, Miller..............Boggs, Damon, Clemens, how many ex Red Sox have the MFY's signed over the years anyway?

Pineda gets the win; didn't recognize him without the huge glob of pine tar on his neck, although the sideways hat is a good look.............:rolleyes2:..........when did wearing your cap sideways become a thing anyway?

Jays also won, still up by 1.5......whoever wins the division avoids the one game playoff and then the Royals.

Ranking the contenders in the AL, I'll go Royals, Jays, AAAstros, Rangers, MFY's.
