My everlasting memory of Crystal was back in 2004 when the Red Sox won game 7 at the old Yankee Stadium, there was a shot of him staring at the celebration on the field in utter disbelief.

I've seen that look before; I remember when as a kid my older brother used to kick my tail in one on one basketball in our driveway. When I turned 18, during one of our games I blew past him and dunked the ball and when I looked at him, he had that same look on his face.

The new Yankee stadium is a lifeless, soulless, cavernous farce; it has none of the mystique and aura that the old place had, no "ghosts" as Captain Intangibles used to refer to, nothing.

How the mighty have fallen; one WS title in the last 15 years, they've sunken to being a wild card playing in the play in game to advance in the playoffs.

They'll always be competitive as they are a big market team, I wonder if the glory years of the 20's to the 50's and the mid 90's will ever come back.

Time will tell......................

Hi George

As usual you have a flair for words! I also have trouble with the who is who on the team now. They did make it to the post season much to the surprise of many sports writers but like you mentioned they dont have anything in the bull pen and their hitting is all over the place. I want to see them get back to the way they used to play with small hits and the occasional bomb. You win more games if you actually hit the ball...

Anyway it will be an interesting winter with a lot of changes come spring.

Dave

Brad,
I think this week you'll be seeing a lot of this.............

If the Mets owners are smart, they will jump all over this. The current Yankees are boring, corporate, dull, lifeless, much like their new stadium.

ARoid is the face of that franchise; let that sink in for a moment. They have no real star power anymore, they are boring.

I don't see them going back to their wild spending days under Heir Steinbrenner, so they'll have to continue to build through the farm system and maybe trades, sprinkling in a big signing here and there.

But the days of finishing out of the playoffs and then signing CC, Burnett and Horseface all in one off season and buying another WS title like they did in 2009 are gone...................

From your lips to God's ears George. Things are cyclical and the Mets may be up and Yankees down for now.

I've heard several fans complain about the Stadium. It's not nearly as good as the old Yankee Stadium. CitiField tends to be a little more homey as it's smaller but nothing brings crowds like winning baseball.

I don't see Hank Steinbrenner spending cash like his father did as he's a little more measured and not prone to wild impulses. Whether they have the stomach to rebuild is another story but their days of buying high priced older free agents may be on the decline.

Everyone loves a winner; as a Boston sports fan, I would support the Braves as my national league team if they had stayed in Boston and truth be told, when they were white hot in the 1990's, I would have supported them even more so.

I understand you're either a Mets or a Yankees fan in New York, but perhaps the younger fans will switch over to the Mets if they can keep things going, the older ones as well who maybe see the handwriting on the wall.

I saw a story on either 60 Minutes or HBO Inside Sports about a life long Yankees fan who had tickets in his family for two generations who lost his seats when the new stadium was built; actually, they offered them to him, but at an outrageous price, so he declined.

Truth be told, the Krafts pulled that crap on a friend of mine who's Father had seasons tickets back to the first game played at the old stadium and when the new one was built, his tickets in relatively the same spot went up close to four times in price, so he walked away...................

Cubs up 3-zip on the Pirates; short an epic meltdown, this one is ovah as we say around here.

Great; I get to see smarmy Maddon for probably a five game war now with the Cardinals.

Yep. 4-0. The SS Pittsburgh is down by the bow and the pumps can't keep up. -- Al

Well, they just had a chance with bases loaded and the Bucs came up zip. Tough one, they just can't make their own luck tonight. Win or lose, I still think the Wildcard 1 game system is ridiculous when you have a 98 win and 97 win team playing each other.

Well in case you missed it, Pirates just beaned Arrietta as a payback for 2 hit batters. Stay tuned, if you can't beat em, bean em......... Reminds me of the Candy Man - John Candelaria, great pitcher, but if you hit his guys, he would bean you quick.

Pittsburgh being put to death by double-play. 3 of them so far have just killed them. -- Al

Another hot pitcher, another shutout. Arrieta has just had an unbelievable second half and it continues. He has given up 0 runs over his last 4 starts, 31 innings, 10 hits, 1 walk, and 38 strikeouts. -- Al

Where was Bartman when you needed him?

Cubs fans are starting to be annoying, almost as annoying as Mets fans.

My 2 cents,

Cards will pull out all stops and win it all. They are unbelievably good still with all the injuries. Bucs go home again. Bad week in Pittsburgh.

Brad I do agree, the first inning just didn't look right for the Pirates, they came out wound tight, didn't look comfortable. Then when they had chances, hit into double play after double play.

So goes the season.

It's a real shame for Pittsburgh three years running. They have to make sure they win the Division next year.

Cardinals Cubs is Dodgers Giants or Red Sox Yankees, a great rivalry, harkening back to a time when there were just 8 teams in each league.

What in the name of God were the Orioles thinking trading away Arietta; he's lights out, give him one run and that's that.

Then again, what in the name of God were the Red Sox thinking trading away Rizzo, he's only an MVP candidate and he'll be a perennial all star for years to come.

It's Bagwell part II....................Go Cards, I just can't get behind a team with that smarmy jerkwhistle Maddon as their manager.

Plus Theo, who threw a dump truck full of money at Lester..........................nope, can't get behind them.

I guarantee there are O's front office people that have been asking the same question regarding Arrietta but the simple truth was it just wasn't coming together for Arietta in B-more, for whatever reason. Lots of promise/potential that just wasn't developing. He needed a change of scenery. Arrieta and Britton were the bright lights for the O's and neither one could get it together, so Arrieta was traded and Britton was turned into a reliever/closer. Both moves worked out well for the players and at least Britton payed off for the O's. -- Al

I know it's the system in place, it works most of the time, blah, blah, blah, but to have a 98 win team go home after one game is just plain wrong.

Maybe seed the teams after the season is over 1-5, but then the problem is what do you do then; have two 5 game series and the #1 seed sits around for a week?

You have to leave it as is and hope most times the two wild cards don't have the second and third best records in the league, or in this case, in all of baseball.

Regardless, wow is that division stacked.

The Cardinals caught a break as they get Arietta just once in game three; if he goes in game 5 if it gets that far, he'll be on short rest..................
