I don't know when I've seen a pitcher and team go to pieces this fast in a playoff game. Price had allowed 1 hit and was cruising thru 6. Blue Jays foul up a pop-up to start the 7th and it all went to Hades in a hand-basket from there. 6 hits and 5 runs as Price once again cements his post-season reputation for disaster. Good grief! -- Al

Did you forget the Texas Rangers 3 errors in one inning followed by a home run just a few days ago. That was even worse.

I didn't forget that. It was awful. But this game was on cruise control by a pitcher dealing darts and just totally reversed. At any rate, both games are prime examples of why you must get 27 outs to win. -- Al

Stakes are bigger here. They had a chance to go 1-1 but are now down 2-0. Not fatal but not enviable.

Grandy has had a couple of big hits in the playoffs. Gives the Mets the lead in the 5th. :smile2: -- Al

Murph! ^&cool

Put it in the books. They had to have this one as tomorrow won't be easy. Of course, the Cubs have to face Syndergaard so it's not easy for both teams.

If the Mets can beat Arrieta, this series will be all but done. Mets pitching is just too deep. I do wonder why Collins keeps getting Clippard up and then won't use him. First he let Familia get 6 outs and then 4 outs so why even get Clip up? -- Al

At this time of the year, if he needs four outs, he's going with Familia. He just don't want to screw around with anyone else, unless it's Colon. At some point he's going to have to use those guys.

Sounds like a plan that will work fine as long as the starters give him 7+ innings, and there is no reason to think that the staff they have can't achieve that. I think the Mets have a decided advantage over everyone left in the playoffs because of their deep starting staff. With 4 such as Harvey, deGrom, Syndergaard, and Matz, a team is well set for the 7 game series format, but the Mets also have Colon and Niese if needed. 6 potential starters. No one else can come close. The Cubs, to my way of thinking, are a 2 man starting staff, with 2 others because they have to have others. I don't think much of the KC staff and while Toronto has a decent staff, unless they turn things around in a hurry, they are not the worry. I honestly don't see how the Mets can't meet any pitching challenge that might arise against any of the remaining teams. They are my favorites to win it all at this point. -- Al

I think that's the way it worked out tonight as Harvey was very good. In his post game news conference Terry said he would have used the other had he had to and he said he wasn't sure he'd have Familia tonight. I don't particularly trust Niese so I'd worry about going to him in a big spot. Although he's a lefthander, he doesn't always get lefties out. They added a lefthander to the roster, Sean Gilmartin, and dropped Erik Goeddel (as he was terrible against the Dodgers in game 3).

The thinking has always been that if they could get into the playoffs, they would have a decided advantage because of the starting pitching.

So far that's been the case but we're just getting started in the series of good young pitching vs good young hitting.

The caveat to all this is that the bridge from the starters to Familia can be very dicey and if they get into one of those games, you start to get nervous. That's basically what happened in game 2. The pen couldn't get it done.

Murphy strikes again! I think I know who the Mets MVP is, despite all their great pitchers.:wink2: This game could be over already, except for those last 24 outs. -- Al

Mets made that big 1st inning stand up and are now in the driver's seat. Cubs now have to beat deGrom (good luck with that) to have any chance at all. Cubs best chance was with Arrieta tonight and now they are in deep do-do. -- Al

So, this was the great Arrieta?

Mets are in great position right now, going to Chicago. One thing they've done in this series that they didn't do in 2006 was defend the home field. The 7th and 8th inning guys did a great job tonight.

Arrieta is a great regular season pitcher, perhaps even the best of 2015. I would still rather have a Bumgarner who may not ever win a Cy Young but is unhittable in the playoffs.

Brad, don't be arrogant. Most of us baseball fans are rooting for your team, already. This may be the Mets moment, but getting prematurely cocky is usually the M.O. for Patriots fans and the like..:tongue:Michael

I would hazard a guess about Arrieta, and that is he has run out of gas. Previous to this year, his innings pitched high was 156, last year. This year he is now over 240 innings. Pressure may have gotten to him, but I think he's tired. Anyway, he had a regular season worthy of the Cy Young and he dragged the Cubs into playoffs because of it. -- Al

Not cocky or arrogant but first time I saw him pitch and he didn't look as good as the Dodger two. I'd venture to say the amount of innings is wearing on him. I hope they don't have to face him again though.
