Had the night to sleep on it, and, well, I still think not using Britton is THE STUPIDEST DECISION in Oriole history. I love Buck as our manager, but I will NEVER understand this move. The decision is being roasted by every baseball pundit I have watched or read. Of course, all the criticism is 20-20 hindsight, except for the O's fans who knew that this move would be fatal. After watching Jimenez "perform" all season, he was absolutely the wrong man at the wrong time and even the most fair-weather O's fan could have told Buck that. I just don't know what else to say or think. Blast. -- Al

I thought it would come out that the guy was hurt, guess that is not the case.

Buck pulled a 180 degree Grady Little, who left Pedro in in the 8th inning of game 7 of the 2003 ALCS with a two run lead and the MFY's came back to tie it.

Will never forget the shot of dumbo ears on second base screaming after his seeing eye bloop single scored the tying run, right before Shemp hit a single to put the two tying runs on base.

Shemp and dumbo ears, my two favorite MFY's from that 2003 team.

If Farrell had done what Buck did last night, people would be waiting at the airport for the team plane to arrive.............................

Old school managing is you do not bring your closer in a tie game..Mo Rivera's worst performances were mostly in tie game situations..Michael

It also seems that closers do not do well in tie games. They seem to thrive best in crisis situations.

Absolutely true; you don't bring your closer into a tie game on the road.

That said, when the first two batters got on base, Britton had to come in the game there to face EE; it's inexcusable to leave him in the bullpen and lose like that, what a meatball that pitch was, strait as an arrow right down broadway.

There it is. George hits the nail on the head, as he so often does. Maybe you don't WANT to bring in the closer in a tie game, but you sure as heck want to bring in the best closer in baseball with 1 out and runners on the corner in a sudden-death tie situation. THAT is the exact situation Britton and guys like him thrive in. It was a HUGE missed opportunity and it cost the O's everything. -- Al

Back in July of this year Showalter brought Britton into a tie game in the 9th inning. He pitched 2 innings and did not give up a run. The Orioles went on to win that game in 12 innings, 6-2 with Givens ultimately getting the win. One more thing worth noting, the opponent in that game was the Blue Jays.

I sort of understand the strategy to that point, try to scrape out a run and then bring him in, but again, once it was clear that tomato can did not have it, time to bring in your ace, a ground ball machine with runners on the corners.

To not bring him in boggles my mind.

This is sports for you; the what ifs, hows and whys is what makes it so great........

We should give some attention to the NL WC game tonight. We have an absolutely epic pitching match-up to enjoy, Mad-Bum against Thor. I am looking forward to it, if for no other reason than to forget last night's disaster for a little while.:wink2: Good luck to Jason and Brad. It will be a nail-biter. -- Al

Al:

Thanks!!!!

I think it will be a great game. Even if I wasn't a Giants fan I would be watching for the pitching match-up alone.

Best,
Jason

It's such a pleasure to watch a crisp pitching duel, moving at a brisk pace. 0-0 in the 4th. -- Al

The tv reception is poor here so I'm listening to the game on the radio.

Now 0-0 after 7. What a game!
Sure living up to the promise and the best tradition of a clutch pitching duel. -- Al

Well, that's it. I somehow thought that Gillaspie -- a sub -- would do something.

Familia and the post season don't seem to go well together.

Good season, just not good enough.

Thor gave the Mets all he had, but just like last night, a 3-run bomb off the bullpen settles the matter, in this case, for the Giants. Brilliant pitching by Bumgarner, as usual for him in the post-season. Can't think of a better post-season pitcher that I have ever seen, or, for that matter, heard off. Tough loss for your Mets, Brad, but they did a heck of a job this season, never giving up even with all the injuries. Jason, congratulations. It was a hard fought and worthy victory. On to Chicago. -- Al

Mad Bum is something else; a complete game shut out and a three run bomb by a sub who got hot at the end of the year.

If the Giants can steal one in Chicago, Mad Bum goes in game three........................should be fun.

Congrats Jason, my NL team moves on...........................

I'd be remiss if I didn't wish Jason congratulations. My son thinks the Cubs will walk over the Giants but I wouldn't sell them short. They may be finding themselves now.

Come on in Brad, the beers are cold, the food is great!! join me on the couch^&grin well the Mets like my O's surprised many a fan and made a great run to be proud of, but here's to Jason's Giants who seemingly couldn't win a series just a few short weeks ago but are rolling at the moment, oh yea it's a even year, what was I thinking:) sorry Cubs, what have you done for me lately song comes to mind, and the Giants have done a plenty, so I wouldn't be surprised if the Giants take the series...Sammy

Brad:

Thanks and congratulations to you as the Mets had an incredible season especially when you consider how their pitching staff was decimated by injuries. Collins gets my vote for manager of the year.

Al/George/Sammy:

On top of my post to Brad, I also want to thank you for the congratulations.

I am going to leave my celebrating to a simple "I am glad we won" out of deference to Brad. Although I have never had the chance to meet him in-person, I consider him a friend and he has been super supportive over the years as the Giants have made their World Series runs. You simply hate to win at the expense of a fan/friend like that.

-Jason
