Two pitches that were costly to the Nats. Werth trying to score on a double and then Pederson's HR on the next pitch.
No idea why Werth was sent home. He's not that fast and the ball wasn't deep enough. It was a stupid decision. Now Baker has overmanaged the pitchers. Should have left Treinen in. He is the best ground ball pitcher they have. -- Al

I now see why Baker has lost 8 (soon to be 9) straight elimination games. This 7th inning debacle is a classic case of overthinking/overmanaging. Jeesh. Baker will be responsible for the new off-season rule by MLB limiting pitching changes to 2 in an inning. -- Al

I agree. Too many pitching changes. What if this game goes extra innings. That ball to CF has to be handled.

Good lord, the game is 3 1/2 hours old and they only have just finished the 7th. The Potowmak Roller-coaster is in full swing. Just what my BP needs.:rolleyes2: -- Al

Well, that's a tough one. I thought it would come down to Kershaw vs Murphy. Well, I was almost right.

Oh well. There's always next season. I must say I'm not surprised and I am also not happy with the way Baker managed this game. LA vs Cubs; Cleveland vs Jays; never would have figured any of those teams at this point. Congrats to LA. They came into DC and took it away from the Nats, but it was close. -- Al

Al:

Sorry, that was a tough loss. You can join me, Brad, George and Sammy in lamenting our team's playoffs.

I figured at least one of us would be moving on. :(

The poor scorekeeper last night. I think everyone including the hot dog vendors played. Two evenly matched teams. Could have gone either way. Unless Kershaw can pitch all seven games against the Cubs that will likely be the end of the line.

Yeah, sorry about that Al, thought they'd pull it out after the pinch hit home run, but that's as close as they got.

Congrats to Doug and the corpse of Larry King, he looks like a body that got pulled from a river behind home plate at Dodgers games................

Poor scorekeeper indeed. Best quote of the night was the TV color guy who made the crack that his scoresheet looked like a Jackson Pollack painting. LMAO. And I agree about Kershaw and team because I felt that even if the Nats advanced, the Cubs were going to finish them. Seems it's their year. I can only wish the Dodgers good luck against them. -- Al

Thanks, George. Part of my complaint about the managing was that Baker managed himself into the position that with 2 on and 2 out in the bottom of the 9th, he had to rely on little used sub Difo in the most crucial at-bat of the game, where as Rendon should have been up. Rendon had a bad night at the plate, but he was a clutch hitter most of the season and was much preferable to Difo. Baker outsmarted himself and it sure partially explains why he has lost 9 straight elimination games. Oh well. -- Al

Thanks, Jason. Just like in 2014, the Nats got outmanaged. Baker completely baffled me with his handling of the 7th inning and a couple of his other moves. -- Al

Al, condolences. It never seemed to me like Scherzer was completely comfortable. He gave his all but wasn't enough. I thought they were going to get back in it when they made it 4-3 and Jansen didn't look comfortable. I thought bringing Jansen in the 7th was going to blow up in the Dodgers' faces but Kershaw came to the rescue.

I will say this; while I'm not a fan of NL baseball with the pitchers batting, all the double switches, the bottom of every line up is soft as toilet paper, etc, etc, but that said, NL managers have a much, much tougher job than AL managers. They have to decide when to pinch hit for a pitcher, how to use the bench, when to leave a pitcher in, when is the pitcher up so he can gauge who's left on the bench to pinch hit, it's a nightmare trying to keep track of it.

AL managers just plug in the DH and fall asleep in the dugout.

Two totally different games.

Thanks, Brad. At least we fought to the end and didn't melt down to lose like in the past. Nats just left too many runners on base. -- Al

A painfully long game to watch. I think it went until almost 1AM. I wonder how all those people got home since I read they were closing the metro at midnight? Maybe they are still sitting there waiting for next season which many probably felt might start before that game ended.

I think the game was 4.5 hours. Reminded me of one of those Red Sox Yankee games. If it had gone extra inninings, I would have gone to bed.
