Jason,I saw a report on the MLB network about his potential signing and what it might do to the Nat's roster. If they signed Cespedes the plan would be to demote or trade Taylor, have Revere platoon with Werth, and utilize Bryce Harper and/or Cespedes in center when Revere isn’t in the lineup.
I think most if not all of this still hinges on Cespedes' asking price.
I can always hope.:rolleyes2: Too many question marks at the moment in terms of the closer (Papelbon or ?), and even the starting pitching where #4 and #5 are penciled in but are far from sure bets. It has been an odd off season for the Nats, seemingly fixing what isn't broken and letting former key players walk through FA without any real attempt to keep them. Beats me. -- AlI only saw Taylor play once, he has all the tools to be a good player and I personally think they should stick with what they have.
In recent years the Nats have been in the headlines for their free agent signings only to go nowhere in the playoffs. Maybe this will be the year when they don't sign anyone yet they get to the World Series.
That is a pretty generous offer by the Nats. It surprises me, but the Lerner's always seem to be surprising me. The opt-out contract seems a no-lose situation for the player and it makes sense that Cespedes may prefer that. Like I said earlier, I'm not sure how Cespedes would have fit with the Nats, short of blowing up the current OF set-up and possibly causing clubhouse problems. -- AlThe latest is that the Nationals have offered Cespedes a five year deal at $20 million per but Cespedes wants to remain in NY so he and the Mets are discussing a three year deal with a one year opt out.
Plus, the celebrity spotlight is brighter in NY, unless you happen to be a politician.:rolleyes2: -- AlIt's not that he has any special love for the Mets; he apparently likes New York as his agents have also contacted the Yankees about a similar three year deal. I guess NY must have more golf courses than the DC area :wink2:

The Yankees said they "may" honor Ortiz, as this is his last year. Listening to the radio this afternoon, Yankee fans are outraged. The thinking going is that if you're not going to honor Arod for hitting 600 HRs, why honor another steroid user.
My prediction is that there won't be any day or whatever for Ortiz. I just think the outrcry will be too loud.
This guy is willing to take a three year deal to stay in New York, with a one year opt out? The Yankees would be nuts not to snap him up. If he opts out, that means he had an even better season than last year, probably propelling the team to the playoffs. Three years means no downside for the team, like there is with a 5+ year deal. I good hitter for power and average, with one of the best outfield arms in the game? Plus it lets the Yankees trade Gardner for a young pitching prospect, something they need. There is really very little downside here. I can't believe its true that he's considering a three year deal.
If the other teams honor Ortiz, the Yankees will. They will not let themselves look petty. Besides, the Red Sox organization and fans honored Mariano and Derek, so we owe them one.
If he is a clean player, his career would warrant a farewell tour, particularly as he led the Red Sox to their only three championships in generations. His name was on the same list A-Rods was on, so it is hard to believe he is clean, but like Andy Pettitte, he is very well liked, so the media has given him a pass. If I'm at the game, and the Yankees honor Ortiz, I will stand up and cheer for him, and be thankful he will not hit any more clutch homers.
From what I have heard, the Mets offered him a three year deal; they don't want to do five. According to the Daily News, the Yankees don't appear to be interested. Cespedes appears to prefer NY (the city) because of the Latin culture there.
Good. He's a better fit for the Mets and he gets mo' money than the Nats offered per year. Anyway, another FA shuns the Nats. Must be something in the water.:rolleyes2: -- AlMets have signed Cespedes to a three year $75 million contract, with a one year opt out. Basically, a one year deal. If he does well, he will opt out as next year's free agent class for outfielders is not as good this year and he could cleanup.
