Rumors flying in the Baltimore area that the O's are interested in Timmy L. -- Al

O's have signed Matusz, so that leaves only Britton without a contract. -- Al

Britton has now signed, like Matusz, for 1 year. Everyone's who's anyone for the O's is now signed. Time to concentrate on a starting pitcher or 2! -- Al

They certainly could fill one of those spots with Lincecum. He is a good fit with the O's, as a new start, a new team and a new league would really benefit him.

Arrieta has gotten a $7.07 million raise from the Cubs, avoiding arbitration. It is a 1 year deal worth $10.7 mil overall. According to ESPN, it is the highest 1 year deal ever for a pitcher with just 4 years service. Now, Jake, what do you do for an encore? -- Al

It's almost time for pitchers and catchers to report. At this point the Mets look pretty set. They could use another arm out of the pen but with Mejia due to come back in July from suspension and Colon probably going to the pen when Wheeler comes back in July, at this writing they look in good shape.

They look better than good. They had a good off-season and have to be the favorites to win the division. Gonna be a fun race again this year. ^&grin -- Al

I think it will be a tight race. I'm not sure there's a favorite. I think Dusty will be great for the team. I hear the Nats have some young pitcher whose name escapes me who is supposed to be lights out.

Brad, that would be 21 year old RHP Lucas Geolito. He is #3 on the Top 100 prospects list, and #1 of the RHP prospect list. He is fully recovered from TJ surgery and is ready to go. He needs seasoning so he probably has little chance of being on the Opening Day roster. We shall see. We all know how hit or miss the prospect listings are. -- Al

It seems like it was just yesterday when TJ surgery pretty much signaled the end of your pitching career.

It certainly is very commonplace amongst pitchers these days. Seems like everyone has had it done. The Nats are taking a very business like approach to the whole thing. Apparently, there are stats that show TJ surgery is effective for something like 5 years and then a falloff in production is inevitable. The Nats did not resign Zimmermann because his surgery was in 2010 and he was 5 years (and 5 effective years) removed from his surgery. Rumor is that Strasburg, who had surgery in 2011 and will be 5 years removed from TJ surgery after the 2016 season, will not be resigned when he hits FA. All very business like. Two very popular and effective pitchers who were, or will be, moved on because of TJ surgery and a perceived expiration date. I hope Zimmemann and Strasburg disprove the 'wisdom' of not resigning them. -- Al

Gents,

First post on the MLB thread. Call me a cherry but I had no idea what TJ surgery was, so I looked it up. You have GOT to be kidding me. Players do this surgery to elongate/enhance their careers? Is this looked down upon? Is is considered cheating ( in a game full of cheaters IMO)? What say you oh wise gents of baseball?

John (who has never...sniff...sniff...been to a MLB game) from Texas

It's not looked down at all. It's just another surgery, no diferent than repairing a broken arm, what have you. TJ surgery is now an epidemic in MLB. It's just part of the game. In the Mets starting rotation, four of the five pitchers have had it.

In no way is it considered cheating. Just a standard injury repair, at this point in time. There are several examples of pitchers who have had 2 such operations and I read somewhere that there is a pitcher getting ready to undergo the procedure a 3rd time. Obviously, there are very successful operations, some less successful, and some outright failures, but it is considered necessary for pitchers with that particular injury if they hope to pitch again. -- Al

ESPN reporting O's and Gallardo in serious talks involving a contract possibly worth $40-45 mil over 3 years. -- Al

Someone must have kidnapped Angelos and assumed his identity. Probably the same person who kidnapped the Wilpons.

It is rather unbelievable. Years of being a tightwad and now money flying everywhere. Kind of shocking and it better pay off or someone's jobs are going to go bye-bye. -- Al

John:

It is a great thread filled with some really knowledgable baseball fans. Al, Brad, George, Louis, Sammy etc., really make it worth reading and participating in.
