I think a case can be made for him. He had 270 wins and although his ERA was high in absolute terms, not in comparison with the pitching in his time. Had he opted to play a couple of more years, which he could have had he not decided to retire, he would have had 300 wins, which would have guaranteed him election. The only pitcher not in the Hall with 300 + wins is the B-12 Rocket.

Mussina spent his entire career in the AL East when it was the toughest division in baseball, year after year. He achieved double figure wins every year of his career except his first year when he only appeared in 12 games, winning 15 or more games 11 times. And in my favorite move, he won 20 games for the first time in 2008 at the age of 39, and then retired, going out on top. Had he hung around just one more year, he would have had a WS championship to go with his 20 win season. He was a class act. -- Al

Unfortunately, it may be tough for him. Although he's grandfathered for 15 years of eligibility, as opposed to 10, voters can now only vote for 10 candidates.

Chris,

What is the difference for whom he played? If he's deserving, he's deserving. I'm obviously no Yankee fan but Jeter is a HOF-er and I believe Pettit should get in too.

Can't get past that "Yankee thing" Al. At least he never won a WS ring. :smile2: Chris
I understand, Chris. I was super-ticked when he went to the Yanks. Blamed Angelos, (still do). Rather like Markakis going to the Braves. I'm still ticked about that but don't hold it against him, rather, I still blame ownership/management. Too tight fisted with the money on key players. -- Al

I hate the Yankees but will applaud when Jeter gets in. Mussina was an Oriole turned Yankee. I certainly understand the money thing but I don't like the Moose. Chris

Al, the Os offered a big contract but the Yankees have deeper pockets. Don't remember the exact numbers. Chris

Not a fan either.

In game 7 of the 2003 ALCS Red Sox/MFY's, Clemens started and got shelled, was knocked out of the game early and in a panic move, they threw Mussina in, not a reliever but a starter, they hoped he could stem the tide until the MFY's could mount a comeback.

He was absolutely lights out, Red Sox couldn't do a thing against them, then the MFY's stormed back vs Pedro when Grady Little had his brain fart, then Fruitbat came in and pitched three scoreless innings and then Aaron @#$%ing Boone had his whopping 15 minutes of fame.

So no, I'm not a fan either.

He also was pitching a no no vs the Red Sox on another ocassion and had it going into the 9th, but Carl Everett broke it up with a bloop single to left center.

So, no no no for you Moose.

The only thing I would add to the discussion about Mussina (the other salient points having already been made) is that Mussina was well over 100 wins over .500 (270-153), and with the exception of Andy Pettite (who admittedly used PED's, so should never be admitted to the Hall of Fame), just about every other pitcher I can think of that is 100 wins over .500 is in the hall. I think, because of his high ERA, he is borderline, but if he made the hall, it wouldn't be a travesty.

From ESPN: Last year 565 players pitched in relief. Only 3 of them struck out 100 or more batters. All 3 of them are now NYY's. Going to be a hard team to beat if they get to the 7/8/9th innings with the lead. They have basically turned the game into a 6 inning game for the opposition. Ouch. -- Al

The big question with Chapman is his status because of his legal difficulties. That's probably why he was so cheap.

O's have lost Chen and Parra. Chen is the big loss. He was an anchor and the only leftie in the starting rotation. He went to the Marlins for $80 mil over 5 years. Seems like an amount the O's could have matched or bettered but they decided Chen wasn't worth that much. Now a suspect rotation is more suspect than ever. Tillman, Gonzalez, and Jimenez all are coming off down years and Gausman is still learning. The O's have to replace Chen and upgrade at least one other starter or 2016 is going to be a long season with little reward AND the situation with Davis is still wide open. -- Al

Darth Boris is ticking me off. He has convinced Chris Davis to pass on the O's very generous $150 mil/7 year offer in the hopes of a bigger strike. The O's withdrew their offer and are now pursuing Cespedes, apparently in frustration over the Davis situation. If the O's sign Cespedes, Davis will obviously have to sign elsewhere, and at this late date, I seriously doubt he can get money equal to or greater than was initially offered by the O's. Greed strikes again. Maybe Davis should listen t his heart. -- Al

Allright! Looks like the O's apparent interest in Cespedes caused Darth Boris and Chris Davis to get off the pot. Davis has resigned with the O's for a huge contract, $161 mil over 7 years, which is just $11 mil more than the offer Boris/Davis rejected a while back. Now that this is settled, maybe the O's will concentrate on getting a starting pitcher or 2. Well played, O's. Boris/Davis obviously felt that other offers weren't coming in at the appropriate level and the O's interest in Cesepedes pushed them into the decision. -- Al

Good news for the Os. Bad news for Cespedes. Maybe good news for Mets. We'll see.

Going to be interesting to see if the Davis signing opens up the log jam on FA signings that has existed. Lots of players still looking for new homes. -- Al

Don't know how serious the O's pursuit of Cespedes actually was. Reports are Cespedes wanted a multi-year (naturally) deal for more money than the O's have now signed Davis for. I believe that the Cespedes pursuit was a deliberate attempt on the part of the O's to get Davis to commit. I don't see any way that the O's would have ever paid Cespedes the kind of money he was apparently asking for. That said, the O's still need an outfielder and local speculation is that a 1-year offer to Cespedes isn't impossible, although Cespedes probably isn't interested in a 1-year deal. This is a great chance for the Mets to step in and resign Cespedes, if he doesn't keep insisting that he is worth $150 mil. -- Al
