Baseball Hot Stove 2015-2016 (2 Viewers)

Is that from a reliable source? I have a hard time believing you'd turn down that much money. I understand the Nats because things are a bit unsettled but the Cards? I don't get that.

Brad, it's on their website, for what it's worth. -- Al

The next time a player is a free agent on a team and resigns with them will be the first time.

I'm sure there are plenty of instances where they do, but off the top of my head, I can't think of any.

I'd jump at the chance to sign with the Cardinals; awesome fans, ownership, a true commitment to winning, great organization, they have it all.

And Brad is right, the Cubs ownership must have found a dump truck full of money somewhere, maybe they found Al Capone's vault while doing all those renovations to Wrigley..................and yes, hitting is not their problem, they mash like a beer league softball team, they need pitching and sorry, Lackey is not the answer, he crapped himself in the playoffs last year, handing the Cubs that series.

I have no doubt you're right Al. I see ESPN gushing how the Cubs are favorites to win the WS, etc., etc. I still stand by my earlier comments about the talent they acquired being ordinary. Also, we all know how well ballyhooed teams do. That's why they play the games. I see Fowler as an attractive possibility for teams like Mets or Nats but the team that signs him has to lose a draft choice.

That's huge money for Heyward. Nats missed out but it is a good miss at that money. It is insanity. Brad, as you alluded to, Harper will own DC. Lerner's may as well marry him into the family and make him a partner now. I guess the $30 mil a year figure floating around DC is not out of line, after all. Insanity. -- Al
Watching the Nats Talk Show this AM, where the host spent the week in Nashville at the talks. He spent a great deal of time talking with many in the industry, especially about the recent huge contracts being signed. The consensus amongst the many pundits he talked with is that Bryce Harper is the favorite to sign the first $40 mil per year contract. If this comes to pass, I don't see how this will be in DC. Sounds like this is a NYY/LA/Boston/Cubs type of signing. It will be a sad day in DC. -- Al

ESPN reporting Johnny Cueto to the SF Giants for $130 mil over 6 years. Actually sounds reasonable by recent standards, on par with Zimmermann's $110 mil for 5 years. -- Al

I like this move. They now have a great number 1 and number 2 in their rotation that can stay with the best teams. If Matt Cain can come back from his injury then the Giants' are contenders.

Jason,
What's up with Timmy L? Is he coming back with the Giants? -- Al

Al:

It doesn't look like it now. The rotation will probably be Bumgarner, Cueto, Samardzija, Cain, Peavy, and Heston. They might keep him for middle relief but only if the price is right.

Someone else will probably offer him more to be a starter.

Too bad, but as they say, "Money talks." Will be hard to see Timmy L in anything but a SF uniform but that's the age we live in. -- Al

Brad:

Excellent point.

Local sports talk said that the Tigers and/or Rangers are interested in him.

I see Grandpa Colon is coming back to the Mets for another season at $7.25 mil. Could be a good deal, although he will be 43 in May. He was the co-leader in wins for the Mets last year with 14. -- Al

I think it is a good move. He is still going at 43 and has proven that he can be used as a starter and middle reliever.

I am still wondering what will happen with Chris Davis?

No idea on this end, Jason. No real feel for the situation other than the longer it goes, the chances increase that Davis will leave the O's. {sm2} -- Al

Super excited that Bart is coming back. Not just a good pitcher but a team leader and great influence on the Latin players. They also have Blevins back in the fold, which is good news.

The rumor earlier today was the Nats were interested but that talk seems to have died down.

Jason,
I am sitting right on top of these two teams and I haven't heard a single thing about the Nats being interested in Davis. To be analytical about it, I don't know where the Nats would put him. They have Zimmerman for 1st base, and firmly entrenched there as long as he's healthy. I guess you find a spot for that kind of bat, possibly the outfield by moving Harper to center but Davis isn't a full time outfielder. One thing for sure, Davis would make pitching around Harper a whole lot harder. -- Al

Nats and Reds are talking about Phillips but he can veto a trade and will probably want more money.

The talk is that Harper will be the first $500 M ball player. He has admired Mantle and the talk has been that he may be go to the Yankees when his contract expires in 2018. Reportedly, Yankees are keeping expenditures down until then so they can pay Harper. Harper in pinstripes. That would be something else.
