The town was by now devastated in many areas, especially around the zones leading to the paratroopers' bridgehead......................

Re: battle for arnhem....

Here we see arguably the most powerful tank of the war, a pz 6 heavy tank known as a King Tiger. Its L70 cal 88mm gun, formidable armour and superb optics meant it could hit enemy tanks and destroy most of them at ranges of 2km or more, but was almost invulnerable to a frontal shot from practically all allied tanks unless at very close range and lucky.................;)

At around 70 tons however, it was underpowered, a real gas guzzler (a significant problem for the Germans at the end of the war), and less than 500 were made.:)

This machine is one of the first fifty or so made - it has the early Porsche turret with a potential 'shot trap' that could deflect AT shells onto the thin roof armour of the hull. Later machines had a Henschel turret with a small frontal target and no overhang.

Nevertheless, a very formidable fighting machine, especially against lightly armed paratroops. They had to pray for a flank shot with a six pounder at short range, or a 17pdr hit - that could do it damage! There were only a few in the whole division however:mad:.................and it would be vulnerable to counter fire with artillery, mortars, infantry and the tank's own gun and machine gun armament - not a fair fight!!!!!!

Re: battle for arnhem....

Okay, time for a pull back shot on this Diorama! It would seem your working

from one the size of a city block! How did you convince the wife to go for

that?

Or are you using the Camera's footprint to fool us?

Either way, its certainly an impressive display!

Re: battle for arnhem....

Unfortunately for the paras however, other methods - far riskier - proved necessary. The molotov cocktail, exciting to use?????:confused:

Re: battle for arnhem....

A height advantage could also be useful.......................to drop the petrol bomb on the tank, hoping to set gasoline fires in the tank through any open hatch, or set fire to the engine compartment, or just make it too unpleasant to breathe!!!!

Sorry, I did have a spare set but already swapped it for some new paras. Good luck with the hunt.

Re: battle for arnhem....

A bird's eye view of a part of the battered town with the Germans pushing the paras back bit by bit - but paying for every yard!

Re: battle for arnhem....

more molotov mayhem...............this time against an sdkfz 234 with a short 75mm gun in a fixed mounting.

This was the same hull as the 'Puma' but that had an L60 50mm gun in a fully enclosed turret.

The open top made it vulnerable to close quarter attack with weapons like petrol bombs..................

Re: battle for arnhem....

Meanwhile, the scratch force of front line, second and third line troops from every German organisation including the Luftwaffe were suffering heavy casualties at the hands of the elite paratroops.
