Boating on the River Nile 1884 to 1898 (2 Viewers)

Thank you Martyn for continuing your creative thread an Johnny for joining him adding to it's creativity. What a pleasure this thread has come to be and thank you both for your efforts in bringing it to us....Joe {sm3}{sm3}{sm3}{sm3}{sm3}{sm3}

Well said Joe! :salute::

Just got back from a visit to Dorset Soldiers - and Giles Brown's new shop. Wonderful place - highly recommended for a visit.

Also highly exciting for me - as I am now the proud owner of about 90% of a 1953 Britains State Coach!!! I had asked Giles to keep an eye out for one "In Need of a Bit of Work" - and he found one for me. Just need to find another couple of offside horses to complete the hardware - then a few minor repairs and a re-paint - and I'll have one at last!

As I just have four more pics to post in this Nile Gunboat subject area however - I might as well do that now - so here they are:

First up shows an Officers Mess - in the Egyptian bush, whilst below that pic - a detachment of Seaforth Highlanders are being towed up to see some action. Note the shaded barge.

Next up is another pic of a gunboat negotiating the wild cataracts on the Nile - with a fearsome whirlpool to the side.

The pic below is of prefabricated parts a gunboat being delivered by train to a suitable place on the River, for them to be bolted together again.

And last - just because I like a good band - Here are some Soudanese bandsmen welcoming The Camerons to their part of the Nile.

And so concludes my posting of bits and bobs found on the web - in varied places. Hope you liked them - and hope they helped fill out any gaps in the wonderful pics that my pal Martyn has in his safe-keeping. Hope you enjoyed them as much as martyn and I do.

Keep an eye out for some more Egyptian Figures being painted by me later on this winter. Adieu - johnnybach

Excellent additions there jb :salute:: That is a great picture of the Soudanese band {bravo}}

Can I ask, will these Egyptians be on horseback :wink2:

Giles is a really nice guy, he produced the Egyptian crew for my Nile paddle steamer

Cheers

Martyn:)

Hi Martyn - Glad you like my last offerings. Yes - my latest Egyptians will complete a lookalike set of Egyptian Cavalry (not quite Britains - but based on that set) ) - and a ten piece Mounted Cavalry Band. These will be the prototypes - for an eventual band of twenty-something - to hopefully look something like THAT picture - (the one you showed earlier in this thread). To my knowledge - no-one has ever made one up before - so this first ten ( all different instruments), are to see whether they can look good enough to complete a larger Band.

By the way - Giles has a really good display of Nile Gunboats in his new display cabinets in the shop. (locally made ones). He had them made up to show off the figures, and weapons, he makes for such boats. I'm really kicking myself - as I unfortunately forgot to take my camera this morning - otherwise I would have taken some snaps, which would have really fitted in well with this thread! Well worth a drop-in visit - for anyone in the Portland area. There's a lovely BIG FREE car park - dead opposite his new shop - tea shop and British Legion - just around the corner! jb

Watch out for traffic in Weymouth though - Olympics will continue for the Paralympic Games soon - so it's STILL a bit busy.

Hi jb

Thought you would have a fruitful trip:wink2:

Those Nile Gunboats sound interesting, but not as interesting as your Egyptian Mounted band {bravo}} Come to think of it I believe Giles has taken one or two to the London Show. Did you spot anything similar to the small Steam Launch in his display cabinets?

Cheers

Yes - not identical - but two smaller steamboats are on display. These were converted models he found locally. Knowing Giles - as I think I do - If there was enough interest - I'm pretty sure he could make something very similar to the smaller steamers you have shown in this thread.

He does a casting of the rear paddler mechanism on the BIG paddlers too. He's got me thinking about THAT idea for the future! jb

Methinks a phone call needs to be placed:wink2:

With all of the stuff I brought away today - and my new State Coach - AND my existing stash - it's gonna be awhile before I take on another large project. BUT - I've long had a fancy to make up a waterline model of an old Nile rear paddler - and stuff it full of troops''n'guns.

Soooooo, - never say never!

Pfffwhaw!!!!!!

Yep! - I have long had a fancy for one - but not at the made-up TS prices for them! As mentioned previously in this thread, there were several varieties of Steamer used in the various phases of the campaign in Egypt. The type that has "grabbed" me most - is the earliest Stern Paddle-wheel type (others were side-paddlers and later - the rear screw types).

I saw a light wooden model yesterday at Dorset Soldiers (next time I go - I will photograph it) of a rear-paddler. It's really just a platform made-up to showcase Giles' Soldiers, Sailors and weapons (Gatling, Maxims and various pea-shooters) that adorn it. Giles sells various bits and bobs - including castings which will enable a modeller to make up a very realistic rear paddle. The rest of the boat is made from a light and pliable type of plywood material - which he has painted white - to show off his figures better. It will just take some time to design one to fit the space I have in mind - and then make it! I reckon that I have at least a year's worth of painting (from my stash), to go before then, however.

Incidentally - there are a number of interesting articles about the various types of Nile Gunboat to be found online - put there by the Melik Society - which was formed to "save" one of the last of these gunboats from vanishing (They took their name from the boat). She currentl still exists as a partial wreck - and they are trying to save what's left - and eventually restore her. Well worth a read - to those interested.

Start here - to acess several very interesting articles - and pictures. All the best - johnnybach

Johnny "Gunboat" Bach, has a nice ring to it ..... don't ya think? ^&grin Will be looking forward to the step-by-step building and painting process of every bell, whistle and pea-shooter. Ahoy thar, jb. :eek:

Just taking a short break now, off to watch "ANDERSONVILLE" on the box

Loved The Black Watch landing - complete with patched trews - and especially some of the cooking pots and pans. I have peeled many a spud into dixies just like the man carrying one in each hand myself - in the past. Only goes to show how if something is "right for the job" - they continue to be used.

That's all I have - are you completed too Martyn? jb
