Hi KV,

The Garland Seller set is Marlborough (last pic) and the civilians in the picture with the Baroda Gold Gun are also Marlborough.

So did you call out to London Bridge?:D

All the best

Dave & KV, great photos. You guys are inspiring me to get more Durbar sets. I only have about six now. This is an era Britains should definitely revisit.

Guys,

I know nothing about this era. What's the significance of the stilts? Is it purely ceramonial or they used for another purpose (other than to just look taller :) )?

Ta,

Simon

Hi Guys,

Wraith thats an interesting question that I will see if I can answer.

I think they may have had a significance in the area they are from. Kutch is on the coast and is now the border region between India and Pakistan. So since they area is quite marshy and has a lot of waterways and houses on stilts they may have had some significance. I will say that they are probably one of the most unique sets produced for the series and I will see if I can dig up an explanation other than my guess but it may take a while. So the short answer is I suspect they have a significance and may have been used a long time ago by the Rao of Kutch in a battle but that is purely a guess. They are fun too look at aren't they.

If anyone else out there knows the answer for sure please drop in a help us out.

All the best

Dave

You are going to love this! Stilt Fighters fought with the guys on elephants!

Dave / KV,

Thanks for the info guys.

That's gotta be some kind of suicide mission hasn't it? I can only imagine that being trodden on by an elephant, is a fairly unforgiving way to go.

Simon

Grasshopper say when walking with elephants, walk tall, especially if you walk behind elephant...ahhhhh I am sure this is not the reason for the stilts but I could not resist - back to you Dave to shed some real light on this!

Dave,

LondontoyBridge had a Pavillion for a hundred bucks and the Lord and Lady Curzon set !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for the tip:D :D

BTW the rest of you Britains Durbar fans London Bridge has some Durbar sets at some good prices. And Ron was GREAT!!:D :D

Hi KV,

You are welcome! I thought he would have a better price.

As for the fighting elephants thing I am sure that I dont believe it but will laughingly conceed that it is a possibility but I bet its a little hard to run in those things...

All the best

Yes I was just in London Bridge the other day looking at the Durbar sets. Ron is a great guy and can tell you everything about the history of Britains. He's a real expert. If you're ever looking for an old Britains set, London Bridge is a good place to check. And he won't gouge with the price either.

You can say that again about 20% below retail at least! Even more even!

Hi KV,

Glad you found some good purchases for a good deal I found my paperwork and see that he hasnt raised his price at since I picked up my Durbar Dias. Very cool to see a store like that these days

All the best

Well, I managed to turn up two tenths of nothing on the stilts query. Google has failed me.

In light of the lack of info, Dave's guess does seem more probable, but I think Michael's explaination is the most satisfying. :)

Gentle Friends,

For many years, it has been my understanding that the stilted warriors were trained to do battle with the enemy who occupied the Howdahs on the backs of the elephants. The stilts placed the warriors at approximately the same height as the enemy who were riding the elephants. The stilted warriors did not actually do battle with the large elephants. Rather, they fought those who rode the elephants.

Unfortunately, I cannot refer you to any specific documentation of my understanding. If anyone discovers documentation of a different function for the stilts, please let me know.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat
