Britain's Zulu War (7 Viewers)

Some of your Lil army zulus right? Nice paintjob KV (although the shield is a bit plain)

Lt, they look nice this way those zulus. Still not too fond of the white. Other than that the paintjobs are great with the red highlighting and all.
In a few months we can compare them with the new output from WB. You could put them next to eachother.

Were the shields always decorated? I can fix that I just thought that some of them would be all black.

All Black is acceptable but the shields came in different colors that was designated to a Zulu Regiment. Here's a few examples......The Lt.

They would just look cooler with the horizontal "straps" (often white on a black shield). To be honest, I'm not a expert on shields. I'm still trying to find a decent book which simply lists all patterns with the appropriate regiment name. "Anatomy of the Zulu army" offers some insight.

The zulus had probably a less uniform mix during the Anglo Zulu wars due to a shortage of cattle (they exchanged them from one regiment to another to match colors), so they might have dropped the official uniform look. Still, a overall black shield was for young warriors and white for veterans. But like the Lt. says there were regulations that detailed colors and the location of spots on shields.

I never saw a plain black shield with black stripes/no stripes pictured though, but I could be wrong. In the end it's a matter of taste and I like them decorated. At least with straps. It is still a great painjob KV  another 'cool face smiley' to you.

Joachim The Osprey War Series 14 Titled Zulu 1816-1906 Weapons Armor and Tactics gives examples of the shields and Osprey's Men at Arms Series 57 provides the color of the sheilds of the Zulu Regiments. Both books will give you the information your looking for...The Lt.

Thanks Lt. I own several osprey titles but need to add some. Osprey books tend to overlap a great deal and it confuses. I have a title called "the zulu war" (campaign 14 series) but it's not "the zulu war" that has the Angus Mc Bride plates WB is using.

I have a "the zulus" (elite 21 series) book with limited info on shields. I will buy the books you suggest and some other ones that are on my want list for a long time now; 'volunteers and irregulars' and 'british forces in zululand'.
I missed out on them last Christmas so I have to be my own Santa.

It seems one cannot have enough books on the subject. Osprey have some new titles now; 'British fortifications in Zululand' and 'Isandlwana'. Need to get both as I expect a more in depth analysis like in the Rorkes Drift book. For chronology I mostly use Ian Knights 'Brave Mens Blood'. The hardcover makes it sturdy.

Do you have all the Osprey titles? Thanks again for the recommendation.

Hi Joachim I'm still lacking a few from Osprey but I do have The British Fortifications in Zululand along with the British Forces in Zulu Land and picked up Rorke's Drift 1879 Pinned like rats in a hole" which replaced the Hard Cover version that Conte offer with his limited edition of the Last Redoubt which I parted company with along with the set. Two books I'm also pleased to own are Michael Barthrop The Zulu War and Rorke's Drift the Zulu War, 1879 by James Bancroft. A neat little book that provides a load of info on the particpant who fought at The Drift is Adrian Greaves Rorke's Drift and yes I also have Ian Knight's Brave man's Blood. I use them all from time to time when trying to come up with my mini photo dios. Looking forward to seeing what Ken's going to be providing for the next go around of figures.......The Lt.

Hopefully something new will be in the february 2008 catalog but it might not be until the supplement arrives since current releases are planned till summer. I'm always crazy for info (as is everybody else on the forum) especially since the flyer says about the glossy range that cavalry and artillery are planned for 2008 :D.

I'm so excited about the first figures of both ranges I'll get in a month or so.

Hallelujah! The Modelzone set, ordered by a relative weeks ago, has been shipped to my address!! I await it's arrival with great anticipation as I've initially ordered it 4 months ago. Now it's still possible to 'collect them all'.

Joachim I'm happy to hear that Colour-Sergent Bourne and his companion are in route to you and I know it's made your day all good things come to those who are deserving of them.......The Lt.

Have you guys seen the new hospital? Those guys have been holding out! I was at the shop whilst Michael was working on his website posting new pictures of the WB stuff. Holy Poop! This stuff has got me tempted big time! Hope some of it makes it to the WC!

Lt.; Thanks, I'll post it when it arrives.

KV; 'Holy poop indeed Boy Wonder'. I assume you refer to the hospital from the recent flyer (due april). It's great as well as big. Hard to pass up on it so I think I'll get it. It's sort of a must have. Are you thinking of buying matte figures from the range?

I do not know. If I do that I will be in huge trouble! Glossy and matt in Nappies, ACW, and Zulus!

Joachim in visting the WBritain site it's showing that the Hospital is scheduled for June. As for figures four Zulus for Febuary and one for March and no 24th Ft Matte or Glossy until April which is a change from their previous availability. Haven't chatted with either Ken or Richard latelay figure they've got load of things in front of them to get done before the and Standard and Supplement is headed to the printers...The Lt.

Ah I see, thank you for the heads-up. I'd rather wait than receive rushed figures. As far as I'm concerned; WB take al the time you need.

Besides that, my wife and I are expecting our second one at te end of march so I'll be pre-occupied with other things

And don't forget the ZW release of the 24th foot figure this month. For me that's 7 new figures I'll receive in february (incl. MZ set). Not bad at all .

I think this planned gradual and predictable release schedule is much better for the collector. Trying to surprirse us and make us buy on the spur of the moment is not good.

Couldn't agree more. In my case I have had some time with the wife to talk things over, make a nice spreadsheet with all releases by month, and now have a chance to look forward to them as they get released over time.

Funny, I thought I must be the only geek making spreadsheets by month and studying them daily. The current version looks very exciting from now until June and I'm sure it will continue to look that way seamlessly into the second half of the year.

Ok the MZ exclusive set arrived last saturday. I told you I'd let you know. I'm pleased with it. The quality of the painting and the finishing of the casting is excellent for a commercial model. And great sculpting of course.
Need. More. ZW figures..

Hi Guys - Have had a good two weeks in Germany and UK for toy fairs. Met with Modelsone and they were over the mooon with the sales of their gloss Zulu War set - numbers are dwindling fast. I mentioned that some of you were having trouble ordering off their website - they thought their site was working fine. But thanks to you all, they did some checking and did indeed find out that there was a glitch in the system and that no international orders could be processed! It is now fixed - so if you are in need of ordering this set then you should be able to do so on their site.

Thanks!

Richard
