What exactly was a "Pioneer"?

Were they used to make clearings for camps, build defensive positions?

Were they used to ancor defenses with their axes?

Sorry, this period of conflict is not exactly my strong suit.

They do look formidable!

Njja:eek:

Precisely, pioneers were the equivalent of today's combat engineers. They cleared obstructions on the march, helped overcome fortifications and field works. I don't know if any pioneer used his ax against an enemy in combat, but it could have happened. But they certainly used them to fell trees to block roads.
In the 18th century, they wore leather aprons, too, like carpenters did.

Prost!

Kilted

the lower guys are pioneers however the top right guys are British infantry....Queen Victoria let a special ruling go through that the soldiers were allowed to grow a 'Crimean' beard.

A lot of the guys took up on this as fresh water and shaving materials were hard to get hold of.

Not sure of their exact regiments!

Tony

I believe they are all members of the brigade of guards and the one with the TAM is a Scots Guard.

Brad:

Thanks, very interesting, I noticed them anchoring a Napoleonic square on

another thread, and I thought it was an impressive formation.

Col. Hester, you live in Illinois and this is your first show!
You will be kicking yourself for not have attending previous ones.

I'm going to be saving my cash this summer. I'll go nuts when I get there.

I have been saving for awhile, putting alittle aside each payday and saving all the spare change in the coin jar and will be cashing that in soon too.

Hopefully, I will not go crazy one the first day and spend everything.

You guys are going to have so much fun! Bring lots of money and something to carry all the goodies with.

This will be my first year going to the show, and by what everyone is saying it will be amazing.

Col. - A few years ago I was in the exact same boat you are in now - I live in Illinois (in fact, about 40 minutes from the show!!!) and had never been to OTSN.. I believe my first show was in 1999.. It was everything and more that everyone said it would be! Lots of great toy soldiers and stuff to buy and lots of great collectors, dealers and manufacturers to meet and greet... It's one on the highlights for me each year! Whether I have $60 or $600 to spend - it's always great fun!

You won't be disappointed!

Enjoy!

Crystal Lake for me.. well what's done (or not done) can't be helped..

When you finally get to OTSN - you'll be like a kid at Christmas time!! Make sure you have plenty of time there! This year will be a challenge for me as I burned over half my vacation on my trip to England (well worth it!!!) and I have a wedding to attend on the Saturday before the show.. But I'll be there as much as I possibly can.

Jim
