All the offseason arrests have been made and it's that time again! A couple of real biggies this weekend and a whole lot of cupcakes.

Michigan 24 Florida 20 - Harblow is the poster boy for nice guys finish last. Michigan wins ugly on the road.

Alabama 37 Florida St. 24 - Satan Saban is Harblow's more evil twin. Bama rolls in the game of the week.

LSU 20 BYU 17 - one of those weird beginning of the season matchups. BYU might pull an upset.

Texas 40 Maryland 10 - Are they still playing this one? I saw more MD games than I care to remember last season. They looked awful at times. The unis don't help. Texas wins big.

Hopefully FSU shocks Alabama, but even as a fan, I think ALabama is too tough and your prediction is pretty secure. As to Maryland, my EX alma mater, I hope they get beat by more than 30, I am hoping the Hook Em Horns beat them 70 - 0. I stopped supporting the University about 10 years ago after several idiotic athletic decisions as well as WAY too many politically motivated issues for my taste. Now, after reading today that Maryland My Maryland will no longer be played by the Band during the game which was a big rallying point, I am looking at getting an honorary degree to replace my diploma from my wall. My son is forbidden to step foot on that Campus and I will eventually burn my own diploma when I retire. HOOK EM HORNS!

I know, tell us how you really feel Tom, there you have it. Again, HOOK EM HORNS!

I gave up watching all sports of my former alum UM last year. It's been a very liberating experience to no longer be supporting perennial losers after 47 yrs, with one or two exceptions. Your post reinforced that decision. Chris

Pretty good slate of "opening" weekend games. FSU/'Bama should be great, I also think Florida/Michigan should be worth watching.

Can't quite throw the towel in on UMd yet, but their dumb*** PC decisions and the idiot decision to leave the ACC are making it hard to stick with them. I mean, the band refuses to play the Md. state song? This is where they now make their stand, on a song? Give me a break. I will continue to watch UMd FB and B-ball, but to be honest, I enjoy USNA FB a lot more than UMd FB.:redface2: -- Al

If Navy is on TV, I always watch them play, whatever the sport. They might not be the most talented team, but if effort counted towards winning and losing they would be undefeated.

Color me shocked. UMd went on the road against #23 Texas and hung 51 points on them in a 51-41 win. Thought UMd would lose big but they sure fooled me. UMd special teams gave away 2 Td's, the offense threw a pick-6 on their first pass, and Texas scored a Td in garbage time or this game wouldn't have been anywhere near so close. First time they have ever defeated a ranked opponent in their opening game and the first time they have beaten a ranked opponent since 2010. Congratulations to the Terps.
USNA also won their opener so it has been a good weekend for the local boys. -- Al

Is USC that over rated or is Western Michigan that good. That game was a lot closer then the final score.

I will probably type this same post at the end of each week this college football season:

Stanford won, Texas lost.

Western Michigan was 13-1 last season losing only to Wisconsin in the Cotton Bowl and beating a couple of Big Ten teams. They are pretty good. SC's defense got pushed around though. Not a great sign with Stanford up next.

They looked great. I thought for sure Texas was going to come from behind and win this one but even with the injuries the Terps responded each time Texas made it a game. And that backup QB Hill looks like a real ringer.

Penn State beat up on Akron, shutting them out, even after putting in the underclassmen when the lead was 42-0. PSU might as well put our local community colleges on the schedule. It's hard to disagree with the argument that they pad their schedule (have done so for years, in my opinion).

Prost!

Just saw that Howard, DC's local favorite college team, pulled a massive upset by beating 45 point favorite UNLV 43-40. ESPN says it's the largest upset ever in terms of an underdog's point spread. Howard was a 600-1 shot in off-shore betting. -- Al

Quite a week for Texas fans. MD puts 50 on the Horns and last night A&M choked away a 44-10 lead in the fourth quarter. 44-10!

I saw this morning the FSU QB blew out his knee and is done for the year, a tough break for him and the team, too bad.

Watched the WVU/VT game last night, talk about entertaining, back and forth the entire second half, one lead change after another, came down to the last play, VT pulled it out.............................

I watched Tex A&M choke away a HUGE lead (34 points) against UCLA and lose 45-44. That was an entertaining game, unless you were for A&M. -- Al

That was a THRILLER!!! And yes it was a CHOKE...somebody is in trouble today!

John from Texas
Not a T A&M fan.

I was reading that the alumni at Tex A&M and UTex are not happy campers today. There is huge pressure to produce right away in college football and even one loss can start the rumblings. -- Al

Call me one pissed off college football fan. NIGHTMARE weekend, FSU plays an exceptional first half against Alabama until..........blocked FG to tie, all downhill from there on special teams and then the worse of the worse - QB done for year on knee injury. What a nutshot. I feel bad for the kid, that is a tough one to recoup from. And to any haters out there - Alabama is that good again, they are the Patriots of College FB. FSU suits up a tremendous defense, which I hope will win them a number of games until the offense can get settled with a new young QB. Alabama while needs to fix some offense, their D is tremendous, the Noles had many chances in the first and beginning second half and that defense stoned them when it mattered and they got better as the game went on. I have a lot of respect for Saban.

Now, onto my other nightmare, Maryland beats Texas to really rain on my parade. I can't believe it. I was never Texas fan and now dislike them even more, I mean they lost to MD on a home opener, a team that has not beat a ranked opponent in what seems like a decade. REALLY>??????

Oh well, onto next week.

Amidst all of the nightmares for some schools this past weekend my two favorite moments were:

The University of Missouri running onto the field carrying the Texas flag as a show of unity and support for those effected by Hurricane Harvey;

USC's legally blind long snapper Jake Olson playing in USC's game versus W. Michigan; he was the snapper on a successful PAT attempt late in the game;
