College Football 2017 (7 Viewers)

I was reading that the alumni at Tex A&M and UTex are not happy campers today. There is huge pressure to produce right away in college football and even one loss can start the rumblings. -- Al

The amazing thing about the A&M game was that they not only blew a 44-10 lead but they did so in the fourth quarter. An incredible collapse. One thing I can't understand about modern football is the compulsion to run the hurry up, no huddle offense no matter the situation. A&M continued to run the hurry up with their backup QB in the game, ahead by a comfortable margin but their defense clearly in trouble. Snapping the ball with 15-20 seconds left on the play clock. That coach should have been fired before he could leave the field.

Some biggies this weekend. The picks:

Clemson 40 Auburn 24 - No way Auburn wins on the road. Might even get ugly.

Ohio St. 30 Oklahoma 27 - Should be a good one but home field and coaching are the difference.

USC 38 Stanford 35 - the Trojan D got pushed around by Western Michigan last week. Hopefully that was because they were going turtle in prepartion for the Trees. Stanford has given SC fits over the last several years but at home and with a deeper team they pull out a close win.

Georgia 24 Notre Dame 23 - Always tough to pick against the Leprechauns at home with their phantom PI and holding calls at crucial points of the game. But a decent SEC team should win.

Doug,
I gotta give it to you, while I may not always agree with your picks and commentary, they almost certainly provide a laugh and smile while reading them!

I almost want to see Auburn pull an upset, if not, Dabo will be all but guaranteeing a repeat...............he was already seen pulling the Rodney Dangerfield respect stick last weekend. Love the ND comment, however, they don't get as many phantom calls with Sourpuss as their head coach, he has somehow even pissed off the All Mighty! Good Luck to USC, this is a pivotal game in the schedule.

You gotta love cable TV. When I was a kid (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth), there were maybe 2 or 3 college football games televised on Saturdays, and if you were lucky, you might get to see a local team every now and then. Most of the TV games were the big name teams, big impact games. Times have changed. My cable system, without special sports packages, has 31 games listed for tomorrow. 31 games! Local teams, national teams, nobody ever heard of teams. If I was so inclined, I could start watching football starting at noon and running well past midnight, without a gap in coverage. These are great days for the college football fan. And there are 5 MLB games I have to consider, all lined up from 1pm to past midnight, as well. I need more TV's, or I need to get a life. Definitely the more TV's option.{sm2}{sm3} --Al

It is great to have all the options now days Al. When I was stationed overseas, before the Internet and satellite tv {eek3}, there was no way to follow any team. We got one or two games on Armed Forces Network and a box score, maybe, in Stars & Stripes. THere's about six yrs of a void in following the Terps and others. Chris

Chris, I'm not sure exactly what years your void encompassed, but I feel safe in saying that you did not miss any Terp championship celebrations.:rolleyes2::wink2: -- Al

Since posting this, and checking the listings this AM, there are another 6 football games listed for a grand total of 37 televised football games to choose from. Ya gotta luv it. ^&cool^&cool -- Al

Week 2 another good one for the Md. locals as the Terps crushed an outmanned Towson team 63-17 to go 2-0 on the season. USNA edged Tulane 23-21 to also go 2-0. I see Army has also started 2-0. Not too shabby. -- Al

Al:

After watching college football all day, I love it when Hawaii has a night home game and it is televised. Kick-off is at 9pm PST!

I watch too much college football.

Jason, I can understand. For some reason, as I've gotten older, I have come to prefer college football over the NFL. I still watch the NFL and care (to some degree) about my favorite teams, but I have no real enthusiasm for the NFL anymore. College ball, despite the mismatches, is just more enjoyable for me now. I really get into Navy and follow a few other teams on a regular basis. Besides, the college kids seem to be having a lot more fun, even if that is just my take on it. Go Navy, beat Army!:wink2: -- Al

Al:

I will watch a decent college football match-up over an NFL match-up anytime.

A few good ones this weekend. To the picks!

USC 47 Texas 30 - the Horns will not only have a chance to remember the Alamo this weekend but to experience what it was like. If MD could hang 50 plus on them in Austin it will be a long day against the mighty, fully NCAA compliant Trojans. A drinking game for every time the commentators reference the SC-Texas Rose Bowl game or Vince "where's my caddie" Young.

Tennessee 30 Florida 27 - a pick'em game. The Vols have a ton of talent and can only choke away so many games before the god of the law of averages says enough and grants them a mercy win. Whatever happened to that UT coach who compared his team to the Germans on D-Day? What a motivator.

Clemson 37 Louisville 34- Louisville always looks like a world beater until they play someone good. Clemson's offense looked terrible last week but they played a great D team.

LSU 24 Miss St. 17 - Haven't seen either team play but this was the only other decent game. Miss St. apparently has a chance but they always do and usually lose.

Mack "the grim reaper" Brown had very stringent academic standards in his days at Texas. His motto was if you were as big as a moose and half as smart then you were eligible to play. A couple of sample questions from Vince Young's entrance exam:

1) Spell "cat" C_T. (fill in the missing blank with one of the following vowels: A, A, A, A or u).

2) Neil Armstrong was the first astronaut to fly a banana to the planet Neptune where he encountered George Jetson and his boy Elroy. True or False? (applicant has two opportunities to pick the correct answer but may not repeat the same answer twice).

3) Mary Jane and Ganja are slang terms for this recreational drug (this is the one question he answered correctly).

With my luck I've probably jinxed SC with my BSing. Texas will come out like gang busters. This will coincide with Internet service being restored in Texas where they will regale us with stories of Mack Brown's charitable nature. God forbid he has opened a chain of Hardees that provide an infinite number of minimum wage job opportunities. He probably walks around in a white suit with Paul Williams as his side kick throwing nickels to the orphans.

SC-Texas turned into a whale of a game. The Texas D played lights out. I was shocked that neither team could run the ball. A tough loss for Texas but they have to be feeling good about the improvement from the MD game. SC on the other hand just escaped. With Stanford losing to San Diego St., that win over the Trees doesn't look as impressive. But now it is on to the usual PAC finesse teams like Cal. So SC should continue to roll for a while but they aren't looking like a playoff team. Tennessee gets choke of the year award. What a bunch of knuckleheads letting a receiver get behind them in one on one coverage on what could only be a hail mary pass. Whew. Brutal.

SC game was a game, wow! I agree on TN, good lawd they have no luck against the Gators, how many heartbreakers is it now? As to my team, FSU is in trouble with losing the games on the schedule due to hurricane, boy I would hate to be that QB now, what a tough road.

Yes, the Texas game was a real trial for SC fans. All the hoopla about the 2006 Rose Bowl game that got away and Vince Young on the sidelines would have made it a real gut punch to lose that one. Texas played lights out on D. They absolutely blew up the SC O-line that had dominated a supposedly physical Stanford team the week before. College football is a tough game to predict. MD ran wild on the Texas D. SC crushed Stanford. The logical conclusion is that SC would steamroll Texas but instead they got stoned. A win is a win though. When they gave up the go ahead TD with about 40 seconds left and with no TOs, I thought they were doomed as doomed can be. Instead they drive down the field and a freshman kicker makes the game tying 40 yard kick. His first career FG. LOL. And that fumble in OT was a miracle when Texas looked unstoppable. What a game. TN and Florida both looked awful. TN is just star-crossed when it comes to big games.
