I had a medical appointment today and had to drive past an enormous testing center set up in the parking lot of the hospital. There was not a single person there waiting to be tested. Not one. I almost felt bad for the folks working there since it was cold and raining and they had nothing to do. I'm sure the situation varies greatly throughout the country but it was at odds with the doomsday scenarios involving hospitals being overwhelmed.

Sounds like a great place to live except maybe at winter time.Do you have Moose crossing the roads up there?
Mark

IN my 34 years here I have had 6 Moose wander on to my property; two of them decided to check out my veg. garden and back porch.{sm2}

I can't count the number of Deer, Wild Turkey (the birds NOT the liquor), Fox, Bobcat / Mountain Lion, E
astern
Coyote, Beaver, P
orcupine, Raccoon
and Mink & Lynx that have visited me over the years.

THANK GOD that I have never been visited by a BLACK BEAR. They are not far from here but seldom venture down to this area.

But the worst and most foul creature that comes to Maine is …… The Summer Tourist.

this story is encouraging...

as the White House and Senate have agreed on a 2 trillion dollar stimulus package...

Wall Street has had 2 positive days in a row...

I can eat meat tonight...

Rural life has its advantages but the global trend is overwhelmingly to more urban settlement. There is a great exhibit in the Guggenheim Museum in NYC about the evolution from agrarian to rural and urban. If Im not mistaken the world will be 88% urban population within 50 years.
So we better prepare for all the challenges that come with densely populated areas.

Rich,
I will not have to worry about it! I am in the most urban area I will ever be in. My retirement is South where I will not pay taxes and never see another snowflake! The only snow I will ever see is on a flyover. Unfortunately, my family is small and in the future my wife and I will no longer have any ties. The only thing I may keep in MD is a beach house and only if it doesn't become too expensive to own.

I will gladly be in the 12%. I grew up a country boy (literally nickname was Hazzard County, I was a child of the late 70s 80s) and I will go out one some day (hopefully in way distant future).

As long as you can stay on the forum and play with your toy soldiers!
I am a city boy and can't be too far away from NYC. Not to say I don't love the country, I am a camper, hiker and kayaker.......but I just love the diversity, culture, entertainment, noise and dirt of the city!

I am a city boy! Although I live on Long Island in a very bucolic area I feel lucky to only be an hour train ride to NYC. I love the country and always enjoyed camping, hiking and kayaking but I also love the excitement, diversity, culture, entertainment, dirt and noise of NY city!
Just make sure you can still access the forum and play with your toys. We all have our likes and dislikes and are fortunate to have the freedom to make choices.
My wife is of Italian heritage and speaks the language fluently, she would love to spend several months a year in Italy. I love visiting Italy for a few weeks at a time but thats not going to happen for a long time.
Stay well.

You too. I figure like everything else, this too shall pass, hopefully with the least amount of damage as possible! You will probably see Italy sooner than you think, on a positive note!

PS I do fondly like visiting NYC! One of many favorite memories is Billy Joel twice in the Garden. Funny thing is, I almost bought April (this year) tickets for a third time, glad I didn't.

We just got news of the test result of my father in law: positive. He's 75, but fortunately never smoked or drank and has no health issues. Nevertheless, it is a punch on the face of how close this virus is of all of us. The whole family (14) will now be tested since we all had lunch together at his home last Sunday...

I talked to Carlos and he told me that his father is doing very well and that everyone else tested negative.

That is wonderful news!

Someone sent me those. I love the first one. Yes, the market was good. I can stop worrying for a few days.

I retired when I was 47...
so I'm used to a lot of free time...
and have sometimes found it hard to spend so much leisure time...
still...
now that I have to avoid people...avoid stores...avoid shopping...avoid bars/restaurants...even avoid Starbucks...
it seems like I have a lot of time on my hands...
the days seem to go by very slow...

QUESTION to our "legal" types!

The State of Maine is fairly low in the COVID-19 infection rate. However, with the good weather approaching that means the Maine will start to experience the summer tourist crowd. We have a large number of people from Mass, NY, CONN, RI and NJ.

Many of the small towns have started to send letters to the "NON-RESIDENTS" who have property here (i.e. summer cottages and such) telling them to stay home and keep their COVID-19 to themselves. (see below)

I have even seen that Governor Mills is thinking of shutting down the boarders of the state and/or prohibiting out-of-state people to enter.

We have no restaurants open, no parks, no recreational facilities, the hospitals are only accepting COVID-19 testing and emergencies, etc.

Here is one example of what I am mentioning.

So the question can the governor shut the boarders or towns refuse to let out-of-state property owner to enter?

All you have to do is stay home to fight this virus, unlike past soldiers who had to go fight our enemies to win a war. That's a good deal.

I don’t really know the answer but people from outside NYC borders simply don’t want NY people to come to their neck of the woods and although I’m a native New Yorker, I feel the same way too. Stay out. The Jersey Shore during the summer is a big attraction for beach goers and a lot of out of staters have second homes there. I read yesterday that some of these towns have barricaded the towns to non residents.

There was a story in the Times last week about the rich escaping from NY, https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/14/...-residents.html#click=https://t.co/mSI8IMeCPi

The comments section is quite interesting.

not going to like myself to a soldier...
but yes...
you're right...
the absolute best thing you can do is isolate yourself for the next 2-3 months......

Brad...

my sister's son...
the one that went to Middlebury in Vermont...
resides and works in NYC now...
my sister flew him home about 8 days ago and he is going through a self imposed 2 week quarantine right now...
they are doing the right thing on making him hole up...
she felt she couldn't let him stay in NYC any longer...
my sister and her husband stay downstairs and Robert stays upstairs...
neither is allowed to intrude on the other's floor...
so far...
he is doing fine...no issues...
both her and her husband are following a strict regime...
she is overly vigilant as she has respiratory issues that she has been treated for in the past...
she is having zero contact with the outside world...
only receiving grocery deliveries...
not leaving the house...
cancelling all activities...
etc...

the height of a stack of 1,000 one dollar bills is 4.3 inches...
the height of a stack of 1,000,000,000,000 (one trillion dollars) is 67,866 miles...
that's a lot of money...

the 2 trillion US financial stimulus plan is not going to be enough...
hardly even a band aid in my opinion...

$1,200...$2,400...
that's 1...maybe 2 months rent...
people gotta eat too...

the cook at Denny's that lost his job...the salesperson at the mall...the barber that lives paycheck to paycheck...
lower class America is gonna get screwed on this...
it's not enough...

Under the plan, individuals who earn $75,000 in adjusted gross income or less would get direct payments of $1,200 each, with married couples earning up to $150,000 receiving $2,400 -- and an additional $500 per each child. The payment would scale down by income, phasing out entirely at $99,000 for singles and $198,000 for couples without children.
