The hero will be the one that correctly predicts the outcome of the virus. The overly cautious, if wrong, will be ridiculed. That's really sad.

QUESTION to our "legal" types!

The State of Maine is fairly low in the COVID-19 infection rate. However, with the good weather approaching that means the Maine will start to experience the summer tourist crowd. We have a large number of people from Mass, NY, CONN, RI and NJ.

Many of the small towns have started to send letters to the "NON-RESIDENTS" who have property here (i.e. summer cottages and such) telling them to stay home and keep their COVID-19 to themselves. (see below)

I have even seen that Governor Mills is thinking of shutting down the boarders of the state and/or prohibiting out-of-state people to enter.

We have no restaurants open, no parks, no recreational facilities, the hospitals are only accepting COVID-19 testing and emergencies, etc.

Here is one example of what I am mentioning.

So the question can the governor shut the boarders or towns refuse to let out-of-state property owner to enter?

They are doing it here too.I can see a lot of court cases when this over. Gunshop owners are furious because Murphy shut them down but let Liquor stores stay open.

I heard this joke on the radio about how you can't tell certain jokes today. My apologies, I don't mean to offend anyone, but to offer some humor in this virus pandemic. I went to the Tempura house today. What's the Tempura house? A shelter for lightly battered women.

Bill Gates was interviewed tonight on CNN. Besides the man being brilliant he has spent the last 10 years studying pandemics and contributing billions of dollars for research and actions on diseases.
In 2015 he warned us that we are ill prepared for potential pandemics and he feared them more than nuclear wars or disaster.
What he said tonight has bee echoed by many scientists, doctors and researchers around the world. In the US we have acted too little too late. We must shut down for 8 to 10 weeks (quarantine and social distancing) and
it must be for the whole country not state by state. Saying that we are weeks away from bringing large parts of our country back to work is irresponsible and dangerous.
We must look at the numbers and research. Even if an area of the country has low numbers right now opening it up too soon will only bring the virus back and help to spread it.
This kind of nationwide lockdown will hurt our economy but if we go back too soon and the virus comes back strong what do we do then?
Please listen to the experts and don't look for quick fixes or magic drugs.
We have been warned.

I was reading about 1918 about how the flu came in 2 waves. The first hurt small children and old people while the second hurt the rest of the age groups. The second wave was worse.

I took the liberty of spacing some of the paragraphs; it's a bit easier on the eyes.

In Britain faced overwhelming odds and were in a more perilous situation than the US is now although in the number of potential deaths some may say otherwise. In 1940 Churchill was candid with the British people that winning the war would take a long time; it would not be over in two weeks. He also said (in 1941) "give us the tools and we will finish the job."

Our leadership needs to level with the people and focus only on the survival of the country but mostly it needs to lead. The government has the tools but it needs to employ them. If not, many more people will die than is necessary.

As an aside I find the briefings unwatchable until the experts weigh in.

Agreed! No politics, just science, data and decisive actions!

Yeah that's great, good for him Rich in that 5 years ago he warned us and has contributed billions of dollars for research, or more importantly "actions" on diseases.

This thing has been running wild worldwide for almost four months, how about if one of these brilliant scientist types to whom billions are being contributed finds a ****ing vaccine for it sooner than later?

At this point, we've blown past China in total number of cases with no end in sight, what will the final tally be, 150,000, 250,000 infected here in the US?

It's clear, as in crystal, that it's not going to slow down anytime soon, the only way I see it that it's contained is a vaccine, people were originally babbling that we'd be fine in April, then it was June/July when the hot weather burns this thing out, now I'm hearing wave 2 is coming in the Fall? So then what? Back to quarantines, businesses shutting down, people by the millions losing their jobs again, how many thousands will die in round two?

This is absolutely unbelievable, just beyond my comprehension seeing what is happening, it's like a bad movie or a nightmare I can't wake up from.

I've given up waiting for one speck of positive news; pretty clear we're months away from that...……………………….just unreal.

It's beyond depressing.

I think the world wide network of doctors and scientists are frantically working on vaccines and medications to cure the virus. Unfortunately it takes time and there is no magic pill. I think we needed and still need a nationwide quarantine fore some period. Now one state closes down and another stays open just defeats the purpose as people travel and still socialize. There is no solution without risk and pain. My family and I are resigned to staying put with only very limited trips for food and medicines. I keep disinfectant wipes in my car and wear latex gloves when I go out and of course stay as far away as possible from others. I just don't think we have a choice other than listening to the health experts. Its not the "zombie apocalypse" but sure is scary!
But don't worry I can still buy toy soldiers!

Right, that is the problem; one country, but 50 individual states, all of whom are self governing this ****show, there SHOULD HAVE BEEN one national policy on this from jump, not this haphazard half assed approach we've seen so far.

Our governor just basically stated ANYONE trying to get into MA from another state will have to go into a 14 day quarantine. Where though? Then he said "We really can't enforce this"...………….why not? ENFORCE it; if you're coming here from another state, you go into MANDITORY 14 day quarantine.

Play time with this thing is over, two to three weeks minimum from peak...……………...how high are the numbers going to go, it's frightening.

The point about the Bill Gates speech is we were forewarned. There was a Pandemic Office in the White House whose job was to prepare for the next disease outbreak and prevent it from becoming an epidemic or pandemic. Unfortunately, in their infinite wisdom, the current administration got rid of this office. Would the continued existence of this office have prevented this pandemic? No but maybe we’d be a little more prepared than we presently are.

Re: the vaccine, as Rich notes, it takes time to develop a vaccine; about 18 months because they have to be properly tested. You can accelerate Phase II or Phase III but you still have to go through them. I think it was Dr. Fauci who said yesterday that certain vaccine candidates could make things worse. Some are touting the drug used for malaria but it’s not indicated for the virus and has to be tested for that indication; someone took it recently and died from it.

See the following for definitions of Phase I, II and III, https://aidsinfo.nih.gov/understanding-hiv-aids/glossary/a-z/play

Right; I'm fully aware of the boneheaded decision to ****can the Pandemic Office, beyond idiotic.

As far as a vaccine; yes, 18 months is the time frame I keep hearing...…….that would bring us to Fall 2021, which would also result in probably three more waves of this virus and thousands of deaths.

So rush it to market and the consequences that would entail or see thousands more die.

Hell of a choice.

Brad, I don't know what any Pandemic office could have done while being deceived...China's concealment of the genesis and nature of the virus, which also acted as a mechanism of viral dissemination, would have blindsided the terminated branch just the same. That being said, I believe that office should certainly be restored to active duty.

Was kind of appalled by the procedural nature of the "vote" in the House of Representatives for a 2-trillion dollar virus measure.

So, we've got this mob of, otherwise, self-aggrandizing pussies who are afraid to meet and approve a truly gargantuan, legislative measure.

Meanwhile, we expect everyone from nurses to grocery store clerks to show up and stand their watch.

Boy, Congress sent those dumb-***** a signal, didn't they!

Know what I'd like to see?

The U.S. Constitution provides minimum ages for the President and members of Congress.

How about we amend the **** thing and put in a maximum age as well...for the lot of them...65 perhaps?

I'm SICK of seeing individuals who are so CLEARLY past their prime making our laws and setting public policy.

If they're too delicate to show up for work, then I say, let's bench 'em, PERMANENTLY.

That's all,

-Moe

I have been hearing and read in a couple of places that if you develop symptoms, you should not take any NSAID (Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drug) like ibuprofen (Advil) or aspirin. Apparently, they weaken your immune system and makes the situation worse. The pain reliever of choice is said to be Tylenol.

The House wanted to approve the bill by unanimous consent without the necessity of an actual vote but one member (who apparently has a history of being difficult) objected. Here are excerpts from the story in the Washington Post:

The House of Representatives voted Friday to approve a massive $2 trillion stimulus bill that policy makers hope will blunt the economic destruction of the coronavirus pandemic, sending the legislation to President Trump for enactment.

The legislation passed in dramatic fashion, approved on an overwhelming voice vote by lawmakers who’d been forced to return to Washington by a GOP colleague who had insisted on a quorum being present. Some lawmakers came from New York and other places where residents are supposed to be sheltering at home.

The procedural move by Rep. Thomas Massie
(R-Ky.) drew bipartisan fury, including from President Trump who derided him over Twitter as a “grandstander” who should be tossed out of the Republican Party.

Massie, who opposes the legislation because it adds to the deficit, insisted over Twitter that he’d “sworn an oath to uphold the Constitution” and was simply upholding that oath. The Constitution specifies that a quorum -- or majority of the House -- should be present for legislative business, but that is rarely enforced.

Because the administration also got rid of the team permanently posted in China to help with situations like this. They would have given us warning, and then the professionals on the NSC could have given better planning and preparation. Now we
Are reacting and behind the 8 ball.

The massive budget cuts at WHO a couple of years ago didn’t help either, but that’s a different issue.
