This post is really incorrect. My understanding of the data is that in SF and Silicon Valley they continue to keep COVID under control. Where it is spiking in California is in SoCal, and contact tracing is showing it leads back to celebrations "Officials have expressed concerns that COVID-19 is spreading from social gatherings tied to championship victories by the Lakers and Dodgers. There are also concerns about more potential infections with Halloween and Thanksgiving celebrations."

So, the spikes in CA are from people not following the guidelines.

Also, here is a recent nature article illustrating how we know masks work:

https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-02801-8

It is not conclusive, but very strong evidence exists.

Unfortunately it is not just a SoCal issue as San Francisco and Silicon Valley continue to see rapid spikes in transmission and hospitalizations.

The average number of new cases per day in Santa Clara County (the largest county in Silicon Valley) has more than doubled since early October.

Since October 2, San Francisco has experienced a 250% increase in cases.

Moderna has announced that early results show that its vaccine is 94.5% effective. However, the vaccine won’t be available for several months, probably not until the spring.

Moderna announced the findings in a news release not in a peer-reviewed scientific journal and has not yet disclosed the detail data that would allow outside experts to evaluate its claims and therefore the results cannot be considered conclusive.

As with the Pfizer vaccine, the Moderna vaccine must be stored at low temperatures but the Moderna vaccine has a longer shelf life in the refrigerator than the Pfizer vaccine — 30 days vs 7 days — and will last 12 hours at room temperature. Both vaccines require two doses.

The Moderna vaccine appeared to prevent severe disease.

Stock futures are up 500 points on the news.

That's all great news. My understanding based on the news reports today is that they could obtain emergency approval before the end of the year. The FDA could give them permission to start distributing for everyone or, more likely, on a prioritized basis for those at highest risk. So maybe this starts to roll out in December.

So the record spike in cases (which is not just occurring in California) is because the Lakers and Dodger won the championship and a few numbskulls celebrated without a mask? Wow. I've seen some crazy "science" but that one is a keeper. Here are a few facts. Cases are at record levels in most every state. In states like California, NY, and PA and others where mask wearing has been mandatory for many months, the case numbers are soaring at record highs just as they are where mask wearing is not mandated. It doesn't take a lot of science to understand that means they are not the game changers that the CDC and a certain political party has suggested. If they were, then the numbers would be noticeably lower where masks are mandated. They certainly would not be higher than they were earlier in this year when no one was wearing a mask. As I said before, everyone should wear a mask. Better safe than sorry but they are just not as effective as advertised. In fact, if they are giving folks a false sense of security during the pandemic, they could actually be contributing to the spread by making people feel that they can safely go about their lives as usual.

Hi PA, one of the reasons for the surge is that the virus is mutating and adapting to its environment and why a vaccine is going to be of limited value unless you take regular booster shots each year like the so called flu shot many take every year in the hope of lessening the chance of getting the annual flu.

Covid is here to stay and like the common cold its going to continue to exist and continually move about the world as only a virus can.

That's pretty much how I understand the virus as well; it's not "going away", it will always be out there like the flu and the common cold and shots are going to be a yearly thing like the flu shot.

My feeling is eventually, it will be time to try to go back to some sort of normalcy and going to the movies, eating at a restaurant, working out in a gym, going to indoor sporting events, concerts and conventions will return, it will be up to each individual as to what level of risk they are willing to take, mask wearing will no longer be required, it will be up to each person if they choose to want to wear one.

I get a flu shot every year, am careful with what I touch and washing my hands frequently is something we all should do in the winter regardless.

Just like I don't hide in my house fearing the flu, I also will not hide in my house fearing COVID.

Methods of treating it will improve as well; they already have in 9 short months; hospitals are much better prepared now than they were back in the Spring.

It will get to a point where it's an acceptable risk........................the older I get, the worse will be the severity of it if I get it, but enough is enough will be the prevailing attitude.

Great post Warrior.

We're social creatures and continuing human contact and everyday interactions is invaluable.

Covid has created a truck load of fear and endless speculation and mixed messages. I believe this to be deliberate.

I found the common sense approach is best and trusting my gut has rarely let me down.

I'm a cynic at heart and learned through a raft of experience's to always question so called experts and authority.

I think we can all agree 2020 has been a difficult year and Covids not done with us yet......

Toddy:

I hope all is well.

As a Type 1 diabetic I am ok with a booster shot or 2 throughout the year, after all I take 5 shots of insulin a day to simply survive.

In fact, if they are giving folks a false sense of security during the pandemic, they could actually be contributing to the spread by making people feel that they can safely go about their lives as usual.

Events that drive people to have close contact, especially indoors, are driving the spikes even in areas with severe restrictions.

This excerpt from The Atlantic says it best to me,

"The coronavirus spreads through the air, so—no matter where you are, even if you’re at your grandma’s house, or your best friend’s—breathing the same air as other people for extended periods of time is risky.

Your best bet is to avoid indoor gatherings altogether. They can be made marginally safer through testing, masking, (my add: ensuring proper ventilation) and limiting the number of attendees, but none of these methods is foolproof. As my colleague Sarah Zhang has written, a negative COVID-19 test is not a “get out of jail free” card; it’s unclear how well the tests work on people who aren’t feeling sick. Masks don’t do much good if people spend several hours together in an unventilated room. And several public-health experts recently told The Washington Post that even small, casual get-togethers are significantly contributing to the spread of the virus."

I occasionally have had to let someone into my house for various reasons. I open all the windows, turn on fans, and enforce masks for everyone inside. We have had no issues.

Masks are game-changers if used the right way, but right now everything has its limitations. Even the vaccine will have its limitations, as other have pointed out. Since we all seem to study military history, it is a very simple defense in depth strategy.

Stay home and isolated if you have cold/flu like symptoms.
Limit your time around strangers, especially indoors.
Where masks when around strangers/people not in your household. (eye covers too if in very close contact)
When indoors, ensure excellent ventilation.
Stay at least six feet away from strangers/people not in your household. (if someone is sneezing or coughing, this becomes much more important, but hopefully they are self-quarantining)
Wash your hands thoroughly.
Get your flu shots, vaccinations.

The above is a proper defense in-depth plan blessed by Dr. Fauci and in order of priority under normal circumstances. This is what he and his family are doing. As they say, "Actions speak louder than words."

I have the privilege of personal contact with Dr. Fauci and people who work with him. I trust him above all others, even if he has made some mistakes.

Riots starting in Europe.People tired of the lockdowns. Will be coming here too. Fauci flip flops from one day to the next.

Wow. I would love to respond to this, but it would probably be considered so political it would shut down this thread.

- Let me just say that January 20th can't come soon enough.

Yes the world's problems is one man's fault.:rolleyes2: Give me a break.

I'm sorry if I offended anyone on here that wasn't my intent. I just feel there can be different points of view on this. To be honest as far as being political this whole thread is political as there's not one post on this thread that's about toy soldiers. Unfortunately the virus has become totally political. I'm a little gruff the way I speak but that's just the way I am. I've lost two family members age 22 and 29 to suicide and drug overdose in the last year so maybe you can understand that I look at the larger picture than just the virus. This will be my last post here as I don't want to get your thread closed. Be well everyone.

If anyone is honest with themselves, January 21, 22,23rd and so on, the sun will rise the same as always and unless the COVID vaccines work quick miracles, COVID will be same on January 20th as it is on January 19th. And the fact will remain that China is still at fault for the start of this entire worldwide mess. And that is what it is, a tragic mess.

Pfizer and its partner BioNTech announced today that a final analysis found their vaccine was 95% effective in preventing Covid-19 and appeared to fend off severe disease.

Now that is great news and one of the most welcome posts on this thread!

They also announced that they will submit an application for emergency authorization with the FDA within a few days.

Regarding Moderna, although they are a smallish biotech company, they are partnering with Lonza for manufacturing and distribution, just as BioNTech, a German company, has done with Pfizer.

Both Pfizer and Lonza have extensive networks although Pfizer’s is larger.

I am sorry to hear this. As a member of 12-step recovery we have seen an uptick in overdoses and suicides. Just found out a guy I used run with died of a combination of the two. Disabled vet who seemed like he had made it to the next level, but instead fell back into the disease and is now gone.

It's been a sad horrible year.I'm sorry for your loss of a friend.
