PA is ending its mask mandate today! Not exactly sure what that means since most businesses have not required masks for the vaccinated in weeks but it is a good symbolic sign. What a mess they made of this fiasco. The development of the vaccine was the only success story to come out of this crisis. Granted that was a biggie. Everything else failed miserably. If this is a harbinger for some future disaster, we are in big trouble. People have become divided, angry, soft, and incompetent.

Could not have said this better myself, I feel the same way.

Agreed 1000%.

Maybe when the next pandemic gets dropped on the world, we'll know how to handle it better, been about 100 years since the last one, we're out of practice.

I wonder if back then people were playing the blame game, telling people not to wear masks, then telling them to wear one, then wear two, then asymptomatic people can infect you, then they can't, then it's on surfaces, so wipe everything down, then it's not.

What a mess this has truly been.

If you recall, last Summer things seemed to die down, number of infections was down, deaths too, we were told heat does not kill this virus, which is not true, heat kills any virus, especially an airborne one, plus people were outside and not cooped up in their homes........it came roaring back in the Fall/Winter, then the vaccine that so many seem against finally stomped this thing out........we had 55 cases here in MA on Friday, 2 deaths.

I'm waiting to see if it comes roaring back in the Fall again, being spread around by all the unvaccinated, or if the initial dose of the vaccine wears off in the Fall/Winter and we have to scramble to get booster shots to contain it.

Brisbane and SE Qld going into 3 day lock down. The case that triggered it was a positive case in a 19 year old clerk whose workplace was just outside the Covid ward in a major hospital. Not sure what variant yet but also affects Townsville, a town much further north, as had just made a trip there.Seems the clerk had not been vaccinated and Premier not happy. Similar to the current outbreak in Sydney where first case was a limo driver who was driving air crew from airport to hotel quarantine. Not vaccinated and not mask wearing. Both are examples of the Govt not paying enough attention to what is going on with staff in close proximity to likely cases. The bad news is it means my reunion on 30 June for former members of Royal Hong Kong Police is cancelled. The reunion is to commemorate 24 years since end of RHKP due to Hong Kong handover. 1 July is a public holiday in HK for that reason.

Same situation here Brett,

We are in a 4 day lockdown, so I'm off out to my shed again and will get on with more painting 'little lead men' and 'little plastic (1/35) men' :)

We do have enough toilet paper :) beer and wine, not to mention food but I hope I don't run out of HUMBROL Paint !!!!!!

John,
Good to see you have your priorities right. Ironically yesterday I bought some essential items to send to my locked down daughter in Sydney (2 weeks sentence). Things like Branston pickle, HP sauce and Marmite {sm4} Just to show off sending 2 toilet rolls as well.

Minor point but "lead" is a four letter word I avoid in the shop ! Pewter and antimony sounds much better.

Brett & John mate, plenty of Kiwi cobber's from across the ditch watching the developing Aussie situation closely.

Seems like 'The Travel Bubble' has burst, no Trans-Tasman holidays for some time now :(

Does this mean that everytime 1 person has it they are going to lock down whole cities? They are not going to let this pandemic die.

That case was the trigger but been a couple of others ongoing recently.
The hospital worker apparently had it in the community for a few days including a family holiday over 1,000 km away in city called Townsville. That town and a couple of offshore islands effectively locked down due to that one case.

In Brisbane there has been a miner who apparently contracted the Delta variant whilst in hotel quarantine and then went to the Northern Territory (NT) to a mine site. Not sure how got out of quarantine without it being detected. Others from the mine have contracted the virus and unfortunately many from that mine have flown to various parts of Oz. I think 4 from a flight of 80 been found positive so far. The original miner had returned to north of Brisbane before found to be positive. NT / Darwin has locked down due to this.

Another case was a stewardess who came out of quarantine over a week ago. Was tested negative on 12th day. On day came out fortunately had a routine weekly test from her airline. Then went to a shopping centre and walk in the city and then dinner out. Whilst out for dinner informed positive and went into isolation. 2/3 others from dinner venue contracted it. Normal variant.

Oz has been very lucky with the virus so far but main factor is probably because an island and shut off most flights. Very difficult to actually leave here at tte moment. However a problem is we keep getting lockdowns between states. If Victoria has an outbreak other states will stop Victorians entering and vice versa. Some of the lockdowns have been due to less than 5 cases (ie. Western Oz). Same applies To NZ. All the lockdowns killing tourism as people hesitant to book anything. Not helping that it is now school holidays and the virus is making a habit of ruining holidays.

Unfortunately having lockdowns is considered an election winning strategy. Only one death from the virus in the whole country this year. Two from the vaccine.

Our main vaccine has been AZ. Originally all encouraged to get it. Then they said only over 50's. This later became over 60's. Just yesterday said Dr's given immunity if something happens to a patient they jab. Now after saying only over 60's they are trying to get more people to take AZ. Seems we have a problem with vaccine hesitancy ! Until recently this included our Premier, Health Minister and Chief Medical Officer who despite encouraging others. had not been jabbed.

Here the strategy seems to be total elimination and nothing else matters (ie. Jobs, cost, ruined holidays, school closures). One of the worst aspects is the strictness of the lockdowns which has prevented loved ones attempting to get to visit dying relatives from other states.

However overall been very lucky despite me personally not being a lockdown fan.

So unlike the flu which has been around over a 100 years and we have learned to live with it they are going to close the world down everytime a case pops up. :rolleyes2:

There is an interesting study that suggests Asians were exposed to a coronavirus-type pandemic that began about 25,000 years ago and that the lower impact on Asian countries derives from genetic immunity that has been developed. It would explain the significant difference in impact between some Asian countries and the US and Europe. Not dissimilar to the impact of diseases that devastated the Indians when Europeans first arrived:

The Delta Variant is supposed to be spreading in this country, just as it has shown up in Australia and other countries, and is supposed to be more transmissible than other prior variants. This was supposed to be principally a problem for the unvaccinated, not the vaccinated; I heard some medical expert say that for the unvaccinated it’s like a heat seeking missile.

Now, we have advice from the WHO saying that because of this variant we should wear masks indoors, even if you’ve been vaccinated, although the CDC has not changed their prior advice. As a result some municipalities, like LA County, are recommending that the WHO advice be followed.

I have worn masks from the beginning but, sorry, I’m not buying this. If the advice is to wear a mask inside even though you’ve been vaccinated, what is the point of being vaccinated. Essentially, you’re being asked to conduct yourself in the same way that an unvaccinated person is and that is illogical. Except for going to medical facilities, I’m finished with wearing masks.

Yeah plenty of struggling tourist operators over here guttered by this latest shutdown. Plenty of snow, but few Aussie skiers to take advantage now.

One Hotel here reports the loss of a million dollars of bookings wiped in a single day......

Mark mate, our PM locked down our capital city 'Wellington' for a week because a visiting Aussie tourist tested positive for the so called 'delta strain' while he was visiting the city for 3x days before flying back to Australia.

Imagine locking down the US capital under those circumstances??

As it turns out NO Kiwis have tested positive for covid in Wellington as a result.

Absolute madness!!!

.....and folks wonder how our relatives managed to survive 2x World Wars?

The stats tell us 98.9% of those infected with Covid don't die or end up with lasting after effects.

Science also tells us the more you vaccinate the more a virus will mutate to survive.

My grandparents went through WWI, Spanish flu, the great depression and WWII and I never heard them talk about the hysteria that's going on now. They said times were tough but they survived.
