Dad's Army (1 Viewer)

Rob....

Nice collection mate. When I was at Uni I bought the VHS box set which, was nice but, when the DVD set came out it was retired to the loft. Have not got any of the books do you recommend one in particular?
Mitch

Thanks Mitch, the A-Z of Dads Army is very good and you can't go wrong with the two volumes of scripts:cool:.I'm sure you'd like any of those, the others are quite good but not as good.

I hope you guys are right - I have never seen the show, but based on all your glowing reviews I just ordered the entire collection on DVD.:D

Knowing your appreciation of Brit humour Louis, you'll love it mate;)

Thanks for the info Looks like Louis will be hooked soon

Thanks for the enthusiastic response to my post gentleman. I've ordered the DVD's and can’t wait for them to come so that I can better appreciate your comments. As I’m sure most of you know, we get several of the British comedies here in America on PBS, so though I never really understood Monty Python (forgive me), I have enjoyed some of the steady doses of Keeping Up Appearances, Are You Being Served, Open All Hours, Fawlty Towers, and my personal favorite, The Office. I don’t always understand the humor, but I (like a lot of Americans) have this curious fascination with all things English. So given my interest in WW2, I figured that I would really like this show, though I’ve never seen a single episode. Thanks again and needless to say, I’m really looking forward to watching this show.

Louis, you won't be disappointed. The series really makes that period seem real, albeit a bit exagerated. Imo it has the best scripts of any Brit comedy I have seen, including Faltwy Towres, and the characters and acting were first rate.

I can't wait to watch the DVD's and let you know what I think. If this really is the best British comedy, I will probably bust a gut laughing.:D

I hope we haven't boosted Dad's Army too much, I recall getting "Kelly's Heroes" based on forum reviews and expected a laugh fest, Kelly's is a great war movie but I didn't see much humor in it myself

Well guys, if I like it, we will have a little Dad's Army film festival at next year's Symposium. Wouldn't it be cool if all you gentlemen (Kevin, Simon, Rob, Mitch, Hoogri, Oz and anyone else who recommended it) could all make it . . .

Louis, sounds like a plan

My favorite episode of the whole Dad's Army series was "Branded". I won't go into details and spoil it for others that haven't seen it, but it was an episode that may bring tears of respect rather than tears of laughter.

Dads Army is iconic and, IMO can and has stood the test of time and, all ages get enjoyment from it. I grew up with this and, yes as a little boy (mind my wife still thinks I am) I enjoyed it as it was war but, as I got a little older I have appreciated, it not only ,because it is portrayed by some of the best English actors but, also, down to excellent scripts some remarkable humour and one liners.

Without getting philisophical and psychological the traits of the character showed, for me, an age that we have lost. It never entered their minds that we could lose or, be overwhelmed by battle hardened troops with good equipment we, would have took them on with a couple of rounds and some improvised home made weapons. Truly amazing.

There's really more irony than humor in Kelly's Heroes. US viewers might be more likely to "get it."

I don't know if it's the best British comedy but I am sure you will enjoy it. Another WW2 comedy worth getting an IMO much better is Allo Allo

Forgot about that one and another must have. correctly, as you state, that is a pure comedy and also, very very funny with great characters.

Yeah, we'd hate for you to give away the plot on a 30 year old series!...lol

Absolutely agree. I also don't want to give anything away, all I will say is have a look at the real life story of the actor concerned after you've seen it, you won't believe what a total reversal of his life the episode is.

Arnold got around didn't he  His Dad's Army character reminds of Dave in the Aussie movie "The Lighthorsemen" who found he couldn't shoot the enemy and joined the Medical Corps.

Whilst I thought Allo Allo very enjoyable,I don't think it was anywhere near as good as DA. The character acting in DA was far superior in my view, it had the nuances, underlying snobbery and most of all the humour of British life in a far less obvious and repetitive way than Allo. Went to the BBC and saw an episode of Allo Allo being recorded , by this time it had become so farcical that the audience response was notably poor. (to be fair later eps of DA also started to go downhill as ideas obviously began to run out-and illness and old age also took its toll of the cast)
