Dad's Army (1 Viewer)

Rob..
Without doubt DA is the best but, when I replied to thebritfarmer I was thinking that if you wanted constant farce and humour AA was probably pure comedy. DA was for sure, comedy but, was for me a thinking man's comedy. Yes you could watch and just be entertained but, you could also delve a bit deeper into the english psyche of the era if you so wished
Mitch
Whilst I thought Allo Allo very enjoyable,I don't think it was anywhere near as good as DA. The character acting in DA was far superior in my view, it had the nuances, underlying snobbery and most of all the humour of British life in a far less obvious and repetitive way than Allo. Went to the BBC and saw an episode of Allo Allo being recorded , by this time it had become so farcical that the audience response was notably poor. (to be fair later eps of DA also started to go downhill as ideas obviously began to run out-and illness and old age also took its toll of the cast)

Yes sorry I didn't really think of it like that, Allo was very good with both comedy and farce.Herr Flick was my favourite character, apart from Vicki Michelle of course;)

I agree, AA was more like slapstick play acting, whereas DA was a more subtle style of humor, both were funny in their own way, but DA more so imo.

Rob...

Yes Vicky Michelle and that gutteral tone made it worthwhile though we were never really spoilt for a bit of stocking clad thigh in the series. I thought it was bad in wartime france?? that would be something that could just about make occupation worthwhile lol.

Since I first posted my interest in getting to know Dad's Army, I've come to love the show. The only difficulty in being a fan in the U.S. though is that it's hard to find DVDs that will play in American DVD players. So far, I've only been able to find one "best of" set that has about 10 episodes on it. I wish I could buy the entire series. Does anyone know where I can pick one up, or at least more episodes that I can watch in the U.S.?

I visited Brian (our Yeoman - on here) the other day at Yeomanary Miniatures in Worthing (UK) - to pick up an order. We had a chat about what he might be making in the Toy Soldier line - and the subject of Dad's Army came up. He told me that a couple of people had asked him whether it would be possible to make up a set of "Dad's Army" - with cast heads to go on the figures to make them look like the BBC Gang.

His first thought was that it might be prohibitably expensive to get the BBC ( who own the copyrights to the show), to agree to allow him to do it. However, he did say that IF there proved to be enough interest - he might at least ASK them "How Much would it cost?".

I certainly expressed an interest. The figures ( if produced) would look like the TV programme cast - and clad in British Army Battledress of the time.

So...............if you would be interested in a set like this..............just let Brian know - and you never know ( I suggest you might PM him). It's really just a numbers game. IF enough people are interested - and the BBC aren't too greedy - there might be enough profit in it for Brian to try. johnnybach.

You've been watching too much Doctor Who, Tom. Might be so at some time in the future - but how long have I got to live - and what about Copyrights ( we've been here before - I think!).:D

A wonderful series indeed, unrivaled in the character skills of its cast. As far as figures are concerned lets see what the year brings.

Don't be so sure about that, saw a show the other day when they reckon in about five years or so 3d printers will in the shops and easy to use, now copyright is an entirely different issue for sure.....:wink2:

Thanks Martyn. I don't think those will work in my DVD player though. However, DVD players are so cheap, maybe I can find one that works with Region 2 (Europe) DVDs. I'll let you know if I have any luck with that.

Fingers crossed :salute::

Cheers
