Portugal vs. Spain.
Not a beautiful match. Portugal were better for most of the regular 90 minutes. But as usually lacked the necessary attacking punch to kill the game, they really are a fast break team only when it comes to attacking. Not even Ronaldo is good enough to solve everything in this department. In extra time, Spain, which has been playing much below their usual standards in the last 2 matches (boring stuff really), felt that Portugal was tired or out of attacking solutions and were superior, sensing the blood and trying to go for the kill, Patrício's 2 great saves stopped them. Then PK's, well, they are PK's. And that's it. Great performances from Moutinho, Pepe and Coentrão, as usual. The team did what they could do. They are not good enough to topple the heavy weights like Germany, Italy or Spain. But they had a good tournament. Spain has more experience of playing at the last 4 or 2 level and get to the 3rd consecutive final, just amazing. They also have more depth, especially coming from the bench. To me it's a mistery why Llorente isn't playing in the striker position.
Football
Unfortunately the romantic idea of a free flowing attacking style team that I cherish looks to have been long ago killed by negativity, strategy, possession. Spain has looked the part sometimes (against Italy and Ireland) but some other times are just content to pass the ball around without any solid fast attacking purpose (most of yesterday's match and against France). I much more enjoy Germany's style, at least from what I saw in 2010 (they were not convincing against Portugal and I haven't had a decent look at them since then, hope to watch their game tonight). If they perform in their 2010 potent intelligent attacking style and win against Italy (2 big ifs), I'll root for them in the final against Spain. But would they mentally overcome their Spain jinx?
Looking for beautiful football looks like looking for the holy graal, not easy in todays closed, cagey style of football. Got to go find some videos of the 1982 Brazil team to watch them again, now that was really exciting fun and art^&grin...
