1) Band Of Brothers
2) A Bridge Too Far
3) Battle Of the Bulge
4) The Longest Day
5) Von Ryan's Express

Brad listed Casablanca, my favorite movie of all time, which I hadn't considered a war movie, so left off my list. If Casablanca counts as a war movie, you would have to amend my list to put it squarely at number 1.

Col. Hesler included "Von Ryan's Express", which is also good, plus, Sinatra was great at everything he did (except, maybe, raising his kids). I would have included "Stalag 17" and "The Great Escape", too, for their great stories and great performances, but, we're limited to 5.
Someone posted on this one or on one of the others that our favorites could change from day to day, too.
Prosit!

No comments:eek:; well I see that is somewhat honored in the breach.:D I do need to explain my response however. In trying to do this, I discovered I needed two lists: one with the war movies that most impress me (or have the most to say), the second with those that I most enjoy watching. As you can see by the appearance of BoB on both, the lists are not mutually exclusive, so if extended, the others in the second list would appear on the first list but lower and visa-versa. Getting past number 4 is quite hard for either list. For example, Zulu, Gladiator, Das Boot, Troy, Breaker Moran, Dr. Stangelove, El Cid, Crimson Tide and the Enemy Below were close contenders for one or both. I know how about a new poll with two lists of the top 50:D:cool:

Most Impressive Five
1) Twelve O’clock High
2) Saving Private Ryan
3) Gallipoli
4) Battle of Britain
5) Charge of the Light Brigade (1970)

Five I Most Enjoy Watching
1) Kelly’s Heroes
2) Battle of Britain
3) Force 10 From Navarone
4) Mash
5) Piece of Cake

Maybe we need to define some criteria for what constitutes a war movie, too. For example, is it sufficient that warfare or combat make up part of the movie, but not the central plot? "Gladiator" falls in that category, in my opinion. It's not about Roman combat on the German frontier, it's about Maximus' struggle against evil and injustice. "Spartacus" could be considered a war movie, too, if "Gladiator" is; the combat is actually part of the plot.

Or is it sufficient that the setting is during a time of war? That would include Louis' choice for "Casablanca"; actually, without the backdrop of the war, the movie really has no plot. It would also include "Land of Hope and Glory", the movie about a British boy's view of the first couple of years of the war.

I don't mean to say that either "Gladiator" or "Casablanca" aren't good films, or shouldn't be on these lists. I enjoy both of them (again, great writing, great performances). I just used them to illustrate how criteria might work in this process.

Ray in the beginning I didn't realised that was only WAR movies, which is the reason I put Godfather etc...

Concerning Gladiator, the first ten minutes is absolutely GREAT, this scene reflect the real Roman War Machine. I am sure if you put together those Romans against any Napoleonic’s or What ever use WHITE SOX in the battle, the Romans will crash very badly those NAPOLEONIC....We talk about here more than 500 years between than...

Cheers

Well, "The Godfather" can count, there's a war between the Corleone family and the others. ;)

Boys some of you have violated the rules by commenting or adding more!
After a few more days I will give 1 point for a 5th finish up to 5 points for a #1 and see what comes up.

Love these.;) Some of my other favorites:

"...Right! Let's get the hell out of here!
....Where are we going, sir?
....Why don't you follow me and find out?"

"DON'T THINK! Don't just glance! LOOK! Search for the bas***ds! OK, let's try it again."

"...more accurately the other way round. Trusting in god and praying for radar. But the essential arithmetic is that our young men will have to shoot down their young men at the rate of four to one, if we're to keep pace at all."

"... It's like shooting rats in a barrel.
....*You'll* be "in a barrel", if you don't watch out for the *fighters*!"

"...Well I mean, can you verify the figures?
....I'm not very interested in propaganda. If we're right, they'll give up. If we are wrong, they'll be in London in a week!."
