Everyones Top 5 War Movies (1 Viewer)

It is a pretty good film & graphic at times. You will remember the phrase "Tank Boy." Enjoy!

1. All Quiet on the Western Front
2. Sands of Iwo Jima
3. Cockelshell Heroes
4. Bridge on the River Kwai
5. The Best Years of our Lives

"The Best Years of our Lives", was about three WWII veterans returing from the war.

Baron, I have both All Quiets on DVD and the second one made for TV was very good.

Baron, I also liked the remake of All Quiet but prefer the original. It has a certain period atmosphere and black and white seems appropriate for that war. About "The Beast", the story line is about a Russian tank crew in Afghanistan that is lost and being pursued by tribesmen who wish to avenge their massacred village. It is very well done and well worth the time. A hidden gem, as it were.

Lancer, I agree with you about the original AQWF. Lew Ayres turned in a fine performance as Paul, as did the other character actors around him. And it does seem more evocative of the time, than the later version.

Prost!

They Died With Their Boot On, Zulu, Battle Of Britain, Cross Of Iron, Gettysburg And Any Other War Movie With Errol Flynn

My top five are:

1. Zulu
2. March or Die
3. Das Boot
4. Gettysburg
5. Saving Private Ryan

and I have about 20 more that would make my top ten.

Bit late to this but......

Black Hawk Down
Bridge too Far
Battle of Britain
Waterloo
Cross of Iron

No room for all the other fantastic films, until tomorrow when I change my mind again.........

No problem but I am afraid you may burn in h*** for that second "anti-Lobsters" pick.;):D

I think he means anti-British (another name for redcoats during the AWI was "lobsterbacks") as there was a whole discussion of "A Bridge Too Far" and "Saving Private Ryan" along with Hollywood in general being anti-British.

I need a translation - anti-lobster?
I will have to refer you to Harry; was him that hacked my computer for that post.;) I think there are some clues in the lastest SPR thread though. FWIW, lobsterbacks was one of the terms given to British soldiers by the colonistists during the AWI.

Hey Spit - I'm the Baaad Lad around here.....

I thought after intensive discussion we had all established that ABTF and SPR weren't anti-Brit..??
Mind you, I never saw any Italians in either so maybe.......

Some nice choices there Kevin, they could be my top 5 as well.

Maybe it was me that was anti-British, er was that anti-French or anti-Penguin; to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself.:eek:

:)Better late than never:

  • Saving Private Ryan - Set the new benchmark for combat footage
  • Downfall - Bruno Ganz's performance as Hitler is simply fantastic
  • Apocalypse Now - The most artistically beautiful war movie ever made
  • Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World - Simply the best tall ships fighting movie
  • Das Boot - A fascinating look into the day to day life on a U-Boot

I have to acknowledge Tora, Tora Tora and A Bridge Too Far for their documentary style portrayal of their respective subject matter.

Limiting this to 5 is cruel. There are so many worthy movies. :)

Saving Private Ryan
The Longest Day
Pearl Habor
Tae Guk Gi
We were Soldiers

But i totaly agree with fmethorst! Limiting this to 5 is cruel
