This is such an unusual piece, based on a painting by George Caleb Bingham, entitled, ‘Fur Traders Descending the Missouri’, I am really happy that it has found it’s way into my collection. Robin.

A very well done set for sure Robin. I decided to pass on this one. Hopefully I won't regret that decision someday.

There is a question as to what the animal is. It’s believed to be a bear cub. The painting was originally called French Trader, Half-breed Son. However, the American Art Union considered the title a little too controversial and changed it to its present name.

Can’t be a cat, the dog would have it😀. John has made it a bear which I think is appropriate for this breed of men who deal in furs and would come across this animal in their work, rather than a cat. Nevertheless looking at the painting is far from conclusive and remains a mystery. Robin.

Nice piece Robin. I remember we had a previous discussion of the animal, a cat in this instance.
Previous discussion.

there is no dog in the painting and on the diorama presented, it was added because JJD's piece did not include a dog...
I'm convinced and it seems visually clear to me on the board... it's a cat.
JJD's teddy bear seems to me to be an error or even a mistake if we refer to the table...

a very interesting article...
Met researchers therefore concluded that it was a bear...
Why, I'm convinced it's a cat...
see the ears of a bear cub and those of a cat and see the ears of the animal in the painting...

One wonders how these researchers arrived at this conclusion..
and what's more, the position in which he stands is that of a cat...

It is artwork, so the painting could represent a bear, cat, fox, dog, or even a flexible fruit bat.
