I built and painted these 1:8 scale models for my son Alec, how did I do? (3 Viewers)

Your son did a great job and sure as heck p[aints better than I do. So does he have his own little collection of miniatures? LOL see you in Chicago.

Carlos

Thanks Carlos! I look forward to seeing you in Chicago as well.:smile2:

I am certainly impressed, and the "Flemish glass" is a good water substitute.

Thank you, Rediarmor!:smile2:

I just sent Brad to close ups of the Jonny Quest model, as well as two shots of the grouping of all four models, with a polite request that he post them on this thread. Let me know what you gentlemen think.

I submitted a photo of the completed models to the official Classic Jonny Quest Website, and lo and behold, they liked it enough to post it on the site: http://www.classicjq.com/ Just click on memorabelia, then on models to find my photo, and several other excellent photos of completed sets of the four models.

Louis,
As your friend, I have to admit this surprised me, what a terrific job!!!!!! Knowing you as well as I do, I am still dumbfounded by the fact that you were able to sit still for 14 hrs!!!!!!!

Seriously, nice job, I know I couldn't do it, but bravo!

Thanks Tom!:smile2: There are a couple of close up shots of the Jonny Quest model in the photos I asked Brad to post, I was really happy with how he and Bandit turned out.

Louis, nicely done mate, and thanks for posting the pics Brad.

Thanks Brad for posting them, and thanks Oz and Brad for the compliments. I was really pleasantly surprised at how well the models turned out, and more importantly, my son and daughter love them.:smile2:

Looks like I am going to have to build and paint some dinosaurs next . . . :wink2:

Louis...yours are the best looking one's on that website...they really are...I'm sure your dinasours will shine too!!!

So you've seen my efforts at model assembly and painting . . . you will soon get a look at my custom conversion skills. My son found photos of some protoype 1:6 action figures of the Jonny Quest team on line. They were to be made by a now defunct company called "Playing Mantis", as conversions of the 12 inch "Captain Action" (Race Bannon and Dr. Benton Quest) and 8 inch "Action Kid" (Jonny Quest and Hadji) figures. My son really wanted them, so I decided to see if I could perform the conversion myself. I decided to start with Race Bannon and Jonny Quest. If these work out, I will take a shot at Dr. Benton Quest (fairly easy other than sculpting the red beard and mustache as I already found a source for his suit and lab coat) and Hadji (good luck to me finding a turban and nehru jacket).

I found the Captain Action and Action Kid figures on line for $29.95 each. I found a couple of websites which sold clothes and equipment for 12 inch and 8 inch action figures, where I was able to find a nearly perfect red shirt with a front flap and khaki pants for Race Bannon, and jeans, a brown belt, a black pullover shirt, white sneakers and socks for Jonny Quest. I also found great brown boots with a bucking strap and a nearly perfect exotic looking assault rifle for race bannon. The Captain Action figure comes with a belt, which I will repaint as the brown belt with silver buckle Race Bannon wears (all the clothes and accessories cost a combined $40.50).

I have to repaint the Captain Action figure's hair white and eyes green (easy enough), but I will have to obtain some kind of sculpting putty (suggestions?) to give the Action Kid figure Jonny Quest's distinctive "pompador" hairdoo, then paint it yellow/blond, and give him blue eyes.

I am leaving to take the kids to Disney for a week early Saturday morning, so this will all have to wait until I return. When it is done, I will politely ask Brad to post some photos of the figures, along with photos of the Playing Mantis prototypes I am trying to reproduce, and again ask, how did I do?

I just found a 1960's style watch for a 12 inch action figure for my Race Bannon conversion (for $3.95).^&cool

I didn't think the Captain Action figure's face looked enough like Race Bannon, whom I always thought resembled a young Lee Marvin. Just on a goof, I did a google search for a custom head for a 12 inch action figure of a young Lee Marvin. $15 later, one is on its way that absolutely nails the look of Race Bannon from the cartoon. Now I just have to read the instructions and figure out how to change the heads!{sm4}

I really get into these projects for my son. I found a figure on a website in Britain of a 12 inch soldier with the perfect face for Dr. Benton Quest, just needing blond hair/beard to be repainted red, and got it dirt cheap (7.95 gbp). I will be dressing Dr. Quest in a nice pair of black dress paints, a white dress shirt, tie, and lab coat, and putting a clip board in his hand.

I found an 8 inch figure of a young Indian Brave (made in the 1970's) for $39.99 which I will convert into Hadji. Bought him a turban with a red jewel in it from an 8 inch action figure website for $1.00. Bought khaki pants and white sneakers for him on the same wesite for another $5.00. Found a Mego Jungle Safari jacket for 8 inch figures which is as close to a Nehru jacket as I am ever likely to find - I plan to sew the collar shut so it really looks like a Nehru jacket, completing my Hadji conversion.

When I get back from Disney a week from tomorrow, this stuff should all be arriving, and I will get to the fun part, doing the painting, changing the heads, etc.

I'm back from Disney (I need a vacation from my vacation!{eek3}) and with some "help" from Alec and Ashley, I started on the conversion of the figures. Race Bannon is done, and he came better than I could have imagined. Converting Race was as simple as pulling the head off a 1:6 scale action figure, dressing the body in the red shirt with front flap, khaki pants, brown boots and wrist watch I had found on various websites and on ebay, painting the "Young Lee Marvin" head I bought, and attaching the head to the body. Total work time, less than two hours. Result: you tell me -- once the rifle I found arrives, I will take some photos and ask Brad to post them for me. I also ordered a Bazooka and am getting a rocket pack, so I can dress Race exactly as he appears in the "Turu the Terrible" episode.

Next came Jonny Quest. I started with an "Action Kid" 9 inch action figure - unfortunately, the clothes I was able to find were all for 8 inch action figures. The Blue Jeans were too tight, the black shirt I found was too short, and while the socks fit, the white sneakers would not fit over his feet. Fortunately, I was able to squeeze him into the jeans (I folded up cuffs on the bottom), and sew the back of the jeans shut. I took a pair of scissors, trimmed the figures feet until they fit in the sneakers. One of the 12 inch action figures I bought to convert came with a short sleeve black turtle neck shirt, which fit the 9 inch Action Kid figure loosely. I will be sewing the rear of the turtle neck to tailor it to the Action Kid figure tomorrow morning. The Action Kid came with a brown mini-pompador hairdoo and brown eyes, so I painted his hair yellow, and eyes blue. I put a brown belt around his waist, and tucked a PVC Bandit figure I found on ebay under his arm. Once I have done the final tailoring of his shirt, I will be pretty pleased with the Jonny figure, although not as pleased as I am with the Race Bannon figure. Total time spent in the conversion: less than an hour. Result: Okay. Good, but not great.

I finished up the evening's work with Hadji. Hadji's conversion was simple and quick. The only real work involved will be the sewing I have to do tomorrow, to tailor the clothing I was able to find as close as possible to Hadji's traditional outfit: white sneakers, khaki pants, a Nehru jacket, and a white turban with a red jewel. I started by undressing the American Indian outfit from a Mego 8 inch indian brave figure I found on ebay, then dressing him in khaki pants, white sneakers and a turban with a red jewel set in it, all found on two 8 inch action figure websites I was able to locate via a google search. The problem was the Nehru jacket: I just couldn't find one. I was able to find an old "Action Jackson" jungle adventure outfit from the early 1970's which came with a dark khaki jacket, as well as a canteen and walkie talkie I decided to use with the Hadji figure as well. The jacket is a bit too big, so I have to tailor it to the young brave figure tomorrow, and I also plan to attempt to sew the collar shut and make it look like the collar on a Nehru jacket, as well as sew a couple of minor modifications to the turban to make it appear (flatter and wider) more like Hadji's from the cartoon.

Once I finish the sewing, and Race's rifle arrives, I will take some photos of these three figures, and let you gentleman judge my efforts. I am awaiting delivery of dress pants, a dress shirt and a tie for the Dr. Benton Quest figure. His lab coat, dress socks, dress shoes and clip board are already here. Once I assemble Dr. Quest, I will take photos of all 4 of the figures together.

Louis, I'm looking forward to seeing this next phase of yours, with the action figure conversions. You're really stepping into a broader world now, congratulations! If you'd like to try your hand at casting sometime, just let me know ;)

Prost!

Thanks Brad!:smile2: I couldn't wait for the rifle to arrive, so as soon as I finished the sewing this morning, I took some photos of Jonny Quest (holding Bandit), Race Bannon and Hadji. I will send them to Brad (Jazzeum) with a polite request that he post them for me.

I sent Brad six photos of the converted action figures, with a polite request that he post them on this thread.:smile2:

Race Bannon's rifle arrived today, and I have to tell you 12 inch action figure accessories have come a long way since I was a kid playing with G.I. Joes. The rifle has a folding metal stock, removable clip with brass inside, a fabric sling and remarkably realistic detail. Race looks great with his rifle in hand. Once his pistol belt, holster and .45 arrive, I will take some more photos.{sm4}

As you could tell from my earlier post, I wasn't 100% thrilled with how Jonny came out, and I hadn't yet received the figure and accessories I needed to do Dr. Benton Quest.

Well, I decided to remedy my issues with Jonny Quest, mostly about the way his hair lacked the classic blond pompadour Jonny was famous for. I bought a container of plastic wood from the local hardware store, and sclupted him a pompadour exactly like the one on the model of him I built and painted (as depicted earlier in this thread). I am waiting for it to fully dry, and once I paint it, I will be a lot more pleased with how Jonny turned out. I am also awaiting delivery of a camera for him like the one depicted with the prototype action figure that was never produced.

Benton Quest was also completed today, and I am even more pleased with him than I was with Race Bannon.^&cool^&cool I painted his head exactly to match the head of the model of Benton Quest, and dressed him in dress pants, dress socks, dress shoes, dress shirt, tie, a lab coat, and put a clib board in his hand, exactly like the prototype of his action figure.

Once I have finished painting the new "Jonny pompadour", I will take some new photos, and ask Brad to post these photos instead of the one I originally asked him to post.:smile2:
