Without having any knowledge about this particular situation (like that ever stops me from commenting
), could it be this is an "estate sale"? You know, someone selling a collection on behalf of a deceased collector. If so, perhaps they are just trying to maximize the dollar received for the effort made.
If the estate is large enough, the seller (a relative or third party) may not be overly concerned with getting every penny. They may just want a reasonable return for things that hold no value for them personally.
Just a guess on my part. Seems odd they would not reveal the reason for selling such a large collection all at once. If it was financial distress they would likely be more concerned about maximizing price, I would think.
