Let it Snow (2 Viewers)

My last report Jazz was 1 pipe shattered on the pool. Well after further inspection, it is more like three in various locations. Fortunately the water line in the pool is not dropping. The pool company has already been called and will hopefully be out here this week.

My dramas are nothing compared to other folks and thankfully no pipes burst in the house. I happen to have tankless water heaters so no chance of explosion there or water coming in from the ceiling. I have seen that happen before and the damage is overwhelming.

There was a construction change that happened a few years back or maybe more, when plumbers began using flexible tubes in blue and read instead of PVC pipe to plumb a house and maybe that flexibility alleviated bursting of static, brittle PVC. I don't know, but yes older homes seem to have more problems. All in all, I am counting my lucky stars so far with one caveat: if one of the pool pipes that is cracked on my system which is near the pool heater that could be costly. Apparently, if water enters the gas run pool heater it is a minimum of 6K to fix. The main pipe to the heat is indeed cracked, but no signs of leaking into the pool heater. Again, I am lucky so far.

My biggest concern when building this house was ensuring the home was sealed inside and out. I hate drafts, but the real reason is I absolutely hate scorpions. So, I caulked and foamed the bejeezus out this house and my plan worked...no scorpions or drafts. Now, I have to change my mindset into a different mode. Since my house weathered the storm at such extreme cold, now I know we are okay for both sides of the weather emergencies. Sadly, my plants took the brunt of the storm and I am going to wait a month to see what survived and what didn't.

Speaking of plants...I used different materials to cover my plants and the one Sago palm that was covered in a U-Haul blanket came out with very little freeze damage. In fact, it was green like nothing happened. My Garlic societies bounced back and the giant laropie did extremely well. Oaks are okay, Mt. Laurels weathered just fine and of course those pesky Cedar Trees. Oh, and my Knock out roses are allright. I shoved hot coals under their tarp periodically to keep them warm, so I hope it helped. I'm not worried about the grass as mine as all artificial. So, U-haul blankets which are made of recycled denim did the trick.

I have a newfound respect for y'all up North and the brutality of cold weather along with power outages and what not. This was not good and I will be more prepared for the next blizzard when it comes. My mind is on overdrive with pre-plans right now and I think I have it sorted out. This crisis stung and I don't ever want to feel that sting again.

John...

almost impossible to get a plumber in Galveston...
unless you have a regular guy with a good relationship that will put you at the top of the list...

I have heard stories of plumbers coming here for work from as far as Alabama...
lots of scams too...
they get your deposit $$$ and disappear...

my house is the newest in my neighborhood by far...
it's 18 years old...
when built...I think my code restrictions were a little more stringent than my neighbor's older homes building codes were...
I was lucky...no breaks inside or out...

several of my neighbors have had outside breaks...
on neighbor had his bathroom ceiling collapse from an attic leak...
what a mess...it literally looks like highway rest stop that someone had Montezuma's Revenge all over the walls...
brown gook everywhere...

I helped a neighbor a few days ago fix an outside 1/2" pvc line...

my yard man is like the Osama Bin Laden of yard sprinkler systems...
the world wide terrorist of sprinkler systems...
he uses a heavy riding mower on the front yard...
he breaks my sprinkler heads regularly...
thank God he can't get it through the back yard gate and has to mow that with a push mower...

so I keep a box of replacement heads...and can handle those jobs myself...
also keep a pvc ratchet pipe cutter...a can of primer and glue on hand...and several 1/2" sleeves and pipe...

it's a mess down here...
the continued flowing of lost water in broken pipes til they were shut off contributed greatly to our water supply being shut off...
the city offered to shut off broken pipes for free...for customers that didn't know how to...
we went off the "boil water alert" yesterday and the pressure is now good...
they got that taken care of...but tons of residents are still waiting for plumbers to fix the cracked pipes...

one guy a few blocks over had a 2AM appointment for his plumber...
so they are working around the clock to resolve leaks...

this is what a Galveston plumber will look like next year...

Another couple inches here this morning. I actually got a warning on my mobile phone of white out conditions which has never happened before.

The scene outside our house between the cars and the garage, where they push the snow. It’s supposed to hit 48 on Wednesday so we may get a little melting.

Chris, John etc.,

As Texans have all begun the blame game for this disaster I am blaming you for the fact that I ate Whataburger for dinner last night.

To further the controversy, I can fully state as a native Californian that Whataburger is better than In-n-Out.

Best (with Lipitor in hand),
Jason

I miss What-A-Burger. When I lived in Texas, they made great burgers to order and unbelievable malts. I even liked the What-A-Chicken sandwich, despite the what-a-gristle. If I still lived in Texas I would probably by 300 lbs!{sm4}

okay...

Louis...Jason...

I read an article a while back that Whatabuger is currently expanding north...
so they may be in your area soon...lol...

and I do like me a Whataburger #2...
that's double meat...
with double cheese...and extra jalapenos on it...

I like to "whatasize" it with the large ff's and drink...
that's about 1,700 calories before you add the cheese and whatasize it...

easily over 2,000 calories...

eat them every day for a week and you will be in the hospital...
a perfect meal for a diabetic....^&grin...^&grin...^&grin...

grew up on those things...

concerning Texas and ERCOT...

saw on local news last night...
in just Houston alone...
26 people died during the freeze...

Ercot has already had 5 officers resign...

Ercot has numerous law suits filed against them already...
one family has filed a $100 million suit over their 11 year old son dying of hypothermia...
saying ERCOT failed to or falsely provided information on the length of the blackouts initially saying the were rolling or temporary...
the Texas Supreme Court is having discussions to see if ERCOT has sovereign immunity protection over these cases...

Giddy Electric...an energy provider in Texas...
has a class action lawsuit against them for price gouging...
one woman received an electric bill this month for $9,300...
she had a variable rate plan...

where her usual monthly bill is $200 to $250...
as a result of them customarily and automatically drafting her account online for payment...
they cleaned out her savings before she could stop payment...

the Texas Public Utility Commission took it on their selves to raise the wholesale price of a kilo-watt...
over her usual 12 cents per kilo-watt plan...to a whopping $9.00 per kilo-watt...
a 7,400 % increase...

Giddy claims they made no profit off this increase...
they claim that is what they were forced to pay...

what's wrong with these big companies...
there ought to be a law...

Arctic freeze claims another life in Galveston

The death toll from last week’s Arctic freeze increased by one on Tuesday after a man’s body was found in his apartment, on 61st Street, the Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed.

The 51-year-old man was found Tuesday (2/23/2021) morning but appeared to have been dead for several days, medical examiner investigator John Florence said.

The man, whose identity was not released died as a result of environmental exposure. That means he likely died as a result of not having electricity during last week’s below-freezing temperatures and power loss.

His death is the fourth confirmed fatality connected to the storm.

Two death’s last week were as a result of exposure and another from carbon monoxide poisoning from generators.

Idiots in chrge of Texas power failure are out the door the past two days,,most all reside in other states

Last Tuesday night and Wednesday morning we reached -7 degrees.

Yesterday it was 81.

Nothing sums (suns) up, Texas weather more than a 74 degree swing within 7 days.

follow up on Giddy Electric...
ERCOT has shut them down...
pulled their license to buy power from them...
and put them out of business...
they are redirecting their customers to other providers...
ERCOT moved fast on this...
good for them...

Mike:

I hope this story doesn’t fade with time and I hope this is just the start of some sort of energy “overhaul” in Texas.

Honestly these changes were long overdue.

Amazingly in a place known for sunshine it took a massive snow and freeze to get things started.

Is there anything sadder than the last remnants of dirty snow piled up in the Walmart parking lot? They plow up piles as high as Mt. Everest and it takes weeks to melt. By the end it is black and dirty like something from a horror film.

For us modelers, though, it's a great source of gravel for use in dioramas. I will fill a bucket with plowed snow, let the snow melt, pour off the water, let the gravel dry, and put it in a container, for that very use.

Prost!

How are our brothers in Hawaii doing? Just read about the floods in Maui...

John from Texas

Maui, Oahu and Kauai all had landslides and flooding (damaged houses). On Maui, a dam overflowed in Haiku flooding that area. Where I live in Wailuku, we had about 2-inches of rain and no big deal. The storm and its damage was highly unexpected.
On another note, I'm about 300-pages into the Musashi book. Good fun. It reminds me of the Samurai movies my mom used to take me to when I was a kid. The book is about 1000-pages, but its an easy read. I recommend it to anyone. It kind of reflects how Japanese think. Here's an example in this joke. I hope it doesn't get deleted cause its not pc.
When a white guy find his wife in bed with another guy, he beats up her lover.
When a Hawaiian guy finds his wife in bed with another guy, he beats up his wife and her lover.
When a Japanese guy find his wife in bed with another guy, he kills himself.
