Matte to Glossy (1 Viewer)

Konrad, that is one fine looking Lancer. I think it's my favorite of all your K&C Crimean conversions.
Still amazed at how good some K&C figures look after treating them to a little glossing.

I'm looking forward to do something similar to their upcoming Little Bighorn series. - Ken

The usual gorgeous results, Konrad. That Lancer and Lord Cardigan are stunning in gloss. Maybe there should be a law that all toy soldiers that depict pre-1914 conflicts MUST BE GLOSS. They certainly look better that way, IMO. -- Al

Something new tonight from my "Matte to Glossy" works and this time from a totally different era then any previous sets.
This one is from the East of India Shogun Collection, and the set shown is SCD217 Toyotomi Drummer and Conch Shell Signals Set.
The first pic shows the original from the mfr's. website and then a few views of how they look now in their new finish.

Konrad...this might be your best one yet...the wood grain on the barrel looks really pretty glossed...plus the guy with the drum sticks looks spectacular...his definition really seems to become more apparent with the gloss!

Thanks, Michael.
I am really getting a kick out of the East of India figures in gloss.
Here are a few pics of the one who takes the prize, so far as of any figures I have converted into a gloss finish.
It is Toyotomi Hideoshi from the East of India Shogun line.
At a later date I will have the complete Toyotomi Camp Scene to show.
Cheers!
Konrad

Without starting from the beginning of the thread..could you tell me how you are achieving the enhanced detail from the glossing. I have glossed flat figures in the past and never have achieved the richness in the finish you have. One can almost see before unnoticed brush strokes and depth to every crack and crevice of the original sculpt..Michael

Hi Michael,

I am not doing anything else beside applying the gloss coat.
The only alteration I did at one point was for the British Troops of the JJD Jacobite Rebellion line, when I repainted their gaters in black.

The gloss varnish I am using, from Miniature Paints of the U.K., does have the effect of toning down colors a bit, and it makes any stroke visible like you said.
The rich shine gets achieved by multiple layers of gloss varnish. In most cases, two applications of varnish are enough, but on a few figures, that seem to absorb the varnish more than others, a third coating is needed.

Cheers!

Konrad

As said in an earlier post when I showed Toyotomi Hideoshi, I got the complete camp scene done in gloss by now and would like to share some pics with you.
First are two total views of what's included in this scene.
Hope you like them this way :smile2:

And a few closer views of parts of the scene.
The "East of India" figures really lend themselves well to a gloss finish, vibrant colors and lots of detail that shows up better.

Hi Konrad,

Once again, you have some serious winners in your collection! I continue to be amazed at how the gloss coating brings out details in such a rich fashion. Your figures are beautiful!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

I certainly do Konrad, they look fabulous {bravo}}{bravo}}{bravo}}

Wanna throw one in this thread before I call it a night.

Got two companions done to the 17th Lancer I posted previously, and here are two pics of how they look like together.
The three figures are CRW-001, CRW-002 and CRW-036, all 17th Lancers from the King and Country Crimean War line.

If I ever caught a bug, it's the "matte to glossy" bug, that's for sure :wink2: ^&grin

Happy Collecting!

And they look so much better for that extra coat (or two), that I'm surprised that K&C haven't taken note - and offered the finish as an option Konrad. I'm certain that those of "the glossy persuasion" might be tempted to become customers, if they were.

An excellent finish on those Lancers - once again. jb

Beautiful results, Konrad. The Lancers look really good. I think the Samurai are the real gems here. They just take on a whole different life with that high gloss finish. If ever a figure was meant for gloss, it is the Samurai. Much of their armor was laquered anyway. Those EoI figures go to another level with your 'alterations'. Nice work. {bravo}} -- Al

Konrad,

Great thread...how did matte ever became the new normal anyhow?

I'll buy a can of my favorite stuff and do one up for the thread! Can we make them even wetter looking??? I'm really liking the east of india figures!

Thanks, Markey.

Go ahead, get yourself a can of that stuff and join in here :smile2:
The more the merrier ^&grin

For an even wetter look, I guess it depends on the varnish used and the number of coatings applied.
But I tell you what. The figures I have done are very, very shiny :wink2:, even if some pictures don't show it as well as others.

Cheers!

Konrad

Got a new one done today.
This time it is a set by Frontline, ACG13 (13" Dictator Mortar and 5 Confederate Naval Crew) from their American Civil War series.
First picture is the original stock photo from the Frontline website, and the following show the set in their new finish.
I think that these figures lend themselves rather well to a gloss finish, and am extremely pleased with the result.
