The brilliant announcer Vin Scully has passed away. A huge loss to baseball and the Dodgers. RIP, Vin. -- Al

Like Chick Hearns with the Lakers, there will never be another one like him. An icon in sports broadcasting. Howard Cosell is the only other broadcaster who rivals him.

The O's success so far must have caught the front office a bit by surprise because they are making moves that say 'we're still a year or two away'. The O's have unloaded their team leader, Mancini, and their reclamation project closer, Lopez, in the last 24 hours. Two key players on the current club gone, so I don't see that the O's think they are ready to contend this year, and must be still gathering players for a push next year. Still, it has been fun this season and it ain't over yet. -- Al

I hate to see Mancini go, or Lopez..but...we have a solid relief squad, Mancini definitely hurt, but we picked up some solid trades and if it pays off this year even better!! After a sweep in Texas the sky hasn't fallen after the trades, the Orioles are in the thick of a wildcard race...as George says sometimes..we're playing with house money at this point, we'll see how it shakes out by Month's end.

The Dodgers suddenly have the Giants' number. They have won seven straight against them. Pulling way ahead in the division. Double digits ahead of SD.

The Mighty No-name Nats are 9-38 within their division (27-32 against everyone else). They are just awful and now they don't have any kind of team leader or anyone as a name for the fans to identify with. This rebuild is shaping up to be a LONG haul but a name worth watching would help the pain some... -- Al

This is what the Dallas Cowboys refer to as a "rebuilding year"....lol...

How bad does a team have to be to hit 7 Hr's in a game and LOSE? Well, ask the LA Angels who just did it last night. They hit 7 Hr's against Oakland and managed to lose 8-7, as all the Hr's were solos. What a freakin' disaster the Angels are. -- Al

Al...

I'm delighted the Astros acquired both Mancini (1st base/outfielder) from the O's and Vazquez (catcher) from the Red Sox...

Yuli at first base is getting a little old in the tooth (39)...while he was last years batting champ...his numbers this year have slipped dramatically...

better yet...Vazquez's bat is sorely needed too...catcher Maldonado is over worked with Castro out and his batting average is a paltry .175...

the Astros are having a very hard time scoring runs...surviving low scoring games with wins from good pitching...
so dumping some weak batters and adding these 2 guys hopefully will help...
their win/lose record being similar to the Yankees and Dodgers...they trail by about 100 runs in the differential stat...

Al...
I know you watch your baseball...
so you have probably seen this already...
Mancini...some in the DH role...
through the 3rd inning tonight...
has had 3 hits as an Astro...
2 homeruns and 1 grand slam...
Astro fans like him!

that trade looks really good right now...

Mancini...he's a one trick pony...one trick is all that horse can do...

Mancini was the most popular O, both with fans and players. Don't know if you know that he was the Comeback Player of the Year last year after his bout with stage 3 colon cancer. He's a fighter, a leader, and an all round great guy. Really glad that he is doing so well and will have a chance at the post-season. The man deserves it. -- Al

It still makes me cringe when they call them the LA Angels. They will always be the California Angels to me. Not sure what marketing genius decided they should change their name in a town where the Dodgers are king. They had their own sort of Orange County/Disneyland identity as the California Angels. There is only one Angels players that I can name from memory. Nolan Ryan.

You mean you don't remember Bo Belinsky?{sm4} -- Al

Did not know that...well deserved then...Stage 3 is serious stuff...

I checked San Diego’s roster after their big trade with Washington.

The only thing wrong with it is that the Dodger’s roster is still better.

The Dodgers have owned the Padres so far this season. That hasn't changed with Soto in the lineup. A risky "win now" trade for the Padres who don't seem to have much a chance. If they don't win the WS, and Soto moves on next season it will go down as a franchise buster.

Soto is under contract for the next two years after this year.

This is the biggest reason Nats fans are in an uproar over the trade. There didn't seem to be a particular reason for a trade this year, no reason to rush Soto's departure with control not an issue yet. We just have to trust that the front office knows what it is doing.:rolleyes2: -- Al

They likely anticipated that he would demand a new long-term contract. Better to deal him when they had leverage than when other teams knew they had no choice.

I don’t really understand what the Lerners are doing the last two years. They gutted a team that didn’t need to be gutted. I don’t blame Rizzo. I’m sure he’s just following orders. It’s like the Wilpons took over their soul.

They did make a generous offer but he turned it down; his agent Scott Boras didn’t think it reflected the market; he compared it to Scherzer’s salary.

No one in DC can figure out what the Lerner's are doing, either. They completely dismantled a WS winner and have shown no inclination to keep talent or spend money to gain talent. Perhaps the Strasburg contract disaster and Soto turning down that huge offer has made them gun shy towards spending further. After promising that they would never sell the team, they are now trying to do just that. Somewhere along the line, the Lerner love affair with the Nats and the city has gone AMF and all this present uncertainty is what the fans are left with. Rumor has it that they have lost a bundle in the real estate market, but who knows? Just hope the potential new owners are committed to keeping the team in DC. -- Al
