I actually felt bad for players like Snell until I realized the Yankees offered him a 6 year $150 mil deal.

He rejected it.

Chances are he is now going to have to take much “less”.

Nice to see Dodger great Steve Garvey is still around and even running for Senate in CA. California is so broken he doesn't have a chance to win running as a well-spoken, normal person but hope springs eternal.

Juan Soto has not even played a regular season game for the Yankees yet there are already headlines about where he will sign next.

The Dodgers have a billion-dollar payroll and won their first game because a double play goes through the webbing of an opponent's glove. I've never seen that happen before even in little league. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. Imagine a major league player having a defective glove on opening day.

Breaking story;

"Representatives of Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani on Wednesday accused his interpreter of engaging in a “massive theft” of the ballplayer’s funds to place bets with an allegedly illegal bookmaker who is the target of a federal investigation."

So his interpreter stole his money and placed bets?

Right; sure he did.

Human beings never cease to amaze - and not for the good. Imagine being in that position traveling with a superstar and living the life but blowing it all on gambling. Likely to spend years in jail. Time to bring on the AI.

If you’re insinuating that he was making bets for Ohtani there’s no evidence for that, at least not yet. He’s not facing discipline nor under investigation by MLB. I know the tendency is to think the worst of people but maybe we should take a wait and see attitude.

Right; like everyone who took a wait and see attitude over Deflategate.

The day the story broke people wanted to storm Gillette Stadium with torches and pitchforks.

Welcome to my world.

Explain to me how an interpreter making half a million a year gets into an illegal bookie for 4.5 million without the bookie thinking there is recourse, ie, he has a backer, or how this has gone from "helping a friend" to "he stole from me."

Maybe MLB can hire Ted Wells, I heard he's free and does a great job of getting to the bottom of things.

This story just broke yesterday, so naturally there is no discipline or investigation yet.

Key word there; yet.

Is Belicheat or Shady Brady involved in this, asking for a friend.

If what happened here is Ohtani paid off 4.5 million in illegal gambling debts, I'd be stunned if there is zero discipline enforced by MLB.

But hey, let's all wait and see.

Comparing unlike scandals is never fruitful and leads nowhere. Based on what happened with the Patriots (which colors your attitude and thinking) you are making suppositions that are neither justified nor warranted.

This is how I'd certainly act around a guy who stole millions from me.........

He should have spend some of that dough on a better haircut.

Reports are coming out that Ohtani paid the debt to get his friend out of hot water, then when his camp found out that's a no can do per the MLB CBA, they changed their tune to "he stole from me."

Someone on another sports forum I belong to said "There is no way MLB punishes Ohtani for this, he's the face of MLB and this would be a bad PR move."

At the time of Deflategate, Brady was the face of the NFL, his jersey was the top seller leaguewide, yet he was suspended four games for "being generally aware of the footballs being tampered with".........................

Comparing both scandals has merit in my eyes, being a Patriots fan has nothing to do with it, the first offense is beyond laughable, paying a 4.5 million dollar illegal gambling debt is far from laughable.

If Ohtani is involved with betting on baseball, he’d have to be banned.

These two are not Tony Soprano and Paulie Walnuts. LOL. At worst, Ohtani used the translator to place some bets on other sports. It sounds more likely that the translator guy gained access to the money or Ohtani agreed to pay off his debts because he was his friend. Regardless, it is night and day from what the Pats did in Belicheat's day. They were repeat offenders caught red handed. And the cheating the Pats did gave them a competitive advantage in the games. So there will always be multiple asterisks on their SB "wins." Like Barry Bonds home run "record" most disregard the Pats SB wins as the product of cheating.

One scandal has nothing to do with the other. Was Ohtani spying on the Giants or the Braves and were the Pats placing bets on baseball or basketball games? No.

As to what actually happened in this case we still don’t know so impossible to speculate although it’s entirely possible that his interpreter may have been placing bets for him. Let’s just hope it wasn’t bets on baseball games. Then we have a big problem.

If the interpreter was placing bets for him OR he paid off a 4.5 million dollar debt to an illegal bookie, either of those are a huge problem, period.

It's one thing to commit either act; doubling down and lying about it is worse.

Maybe MLB can hire Ted Wells; look at all the "evidence" he found for 6 million bucks over deflategate, I'm sure he'll get to the bottom of it in no time.

Here is what I find interesting about this story:

1) The timing being coincidental with opening day. That means the media sat on the story until it would have the most impact.
2) Apparently the only thing that is illegal in California is sports betting. Probably a life sentence but you can rob a bank or loot a store and that is hunky dory.
3) With all major sports promoting gambling and the money being made, this is a scandal that will keep on going. Players and refs will gamble on games. The next step is when they start fixing games. Too much money for it not to happen. This is just the tip of the iceberg for future scandals.

I would argue #3 is/has/was been happening since the Black Sox.

“Welcome back to SportsCenter Presented by ESPN Bet, for more on the Ohtani situation we go to our FanDuel MLB Insider Jeff Passan at our DraftKings Studio in Los Angeles brought to you by Caesar’s Sportsbook. Jeff, how could something like this happen?”

Not a great beginning to the season for my Dodgers. Two games into the season and the $325 million pitcher got shelled before getting pulled after one inning and the $700 million free agent is embroiled in a major scandal. And still 160 games to go. My guess is that MLB baseball gives Ohtani every benefit of the doubt because they view him as good for baseball with his popularity in Asian countries. He fits the narrative they are promoting. No such considerations were extended to Trevor Bauer who they suspended and blackballed for a false allegation without due process. Effectively ending his career even after the law enforcement investigation refused to charge him and even uncovered evidence that he was a victim of a blackmail scheme.
