Well the Phillies finally won one after losing 6 straight. Off to LA now to take on the Dodgers who they swept a couple of weeks ago. I don't see that happening again. Luckily I will be in bed when the game starts tonight so I wont know the result until tomorrow morning.

Mark, you can sleep in November. If you’re a fan you have to watch.

I tuned in for this game after the Giants win.

It was a great watch, with Ohtani’s HR etc.

However the best part was watching Freddy Freeman’s return.

The crowd gave him a huge ovation before his first at-bat with the Phillies bench joining in, their catcher even heading to the mound so that Freeman was basically alone as the cheers rained down.

It was also great to see Harper embrace Freeman after Freddy got a hit later in the game.

That's a great story about Freeman. It was interesting to read his comments. There is nothing more humbling and eye opening than being in the pediatric hospital with your child. Realizing that every single day that there are parents coping with seriously ill children and that you would have gone about your life unaware until you are in the same position. I can remember spending nights in the hospital with my daughter when she was receiving treatment for leukemia and every kid there had cancer. Then driving to my son's school a few miles away where every kid was perfectly healthy and knowing these two worlds had no awareness of the other.

I came across the Giants-Nats game by accident. Couldn't believe the crowd size. I thought it was a replay of a COVID era game. Almost no one there. As in no one. There couldn't have been more than a few hundred people in the stands.

I missed Monday's game because I looked at their website to check the schedule and I swear it showed no game Monday night. The minor league teams also showed a day off.
I listened to last night's game. The Phils won, 6-2, and so, they've won the season series with 4 wins, no matter what happens tonight. That figures into post-season seeding.
But yeah, the West Coast trips are tough, and I usually fall asleep by the 4th or 5th inning.

Prost!

I have watched the entire Phil’s/Dodgers series on TV which is pretty much a battle between the 2 best teams in the NL who are loaded with superstars and even vaunted Dodger Stadium looks barely half-full.

George said it a long time ago, baseball’s economics literally do not add up.

Baseball has agreed with the Bristol Soeedway to play a game there.

What’s next?

I was going to say that I don't think the LA Dodgers are known for setting attendance records-Brooklyn was another matter altogether. But when I looked up attendance numbers so far for 2024, I see that the Dodgers are in first place

The Phillies have been known for setting attendance records since they moved from the old multi-use Veterans Stadium to baseball-only throwback Citizens Bank Park. But they're only third. That surprised me.

Here are numbers at ESPN's website: https://www.espn.com/mlb/attendance

I guess you can't really judge by what you see on any particular day at any particular ballpark.

I'll also add that my own preference is to listen to the games on the radio. Radio is a much better medium for baseball; in fact, radio and baseball "grew up" together.
TV broadcasts irritate me. For one thing, most of the TV broadcasters I see are pretty lousy at calling games, and the radio broadcasters I listen to are much, much better.
Also, radio broadcasts are still free, though I see the trend towards bringing even radio broadcast into pay media, like online streaming. Fewer stations carry games, too, or don't have the range they used to.
I do like former players as color commentators or play-by-play men, though some just can't pull it off.
And another thing about TV broadcasts is the female broadcasters. Most appear to have been added in the name of equality instead of quality or skill, as eye candy. And the TV broadcasts will cut away from exciting action to go to Ashleigh in the camera well, talking about how she asked the manager his feelings, or his favorite barbecue stand, or something else stupid like that. Radio doesn't have that. Even when the broadcasters host someone in the booth, the continue calling the game.
And Joe Buck is horrible, at football as well as baseball. Can do without him.
But radio-sitting outside on a summer evening, listening to Scott Franzke and Larry Anderson call the Phillies games, and glass of beer or two-it doesn't get much better than that.

Prost!

Maybe it’s because the Phillies broadcasters are not very good but in NY we are blessed to have the best TV crew: Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling. Most of the female broadcasters sideline reporters, which feature principally in football, are pretty knowledgeable. They’ve probably forgotten more than I will ever know. I’m surprised you didn’t lump in female print reporters. In my experience they’re very good.

Except for teams like the Yankees, Dodgers and Cardinals, attendance depends on how well the team is doing.

Ebbets Field was not always well attended. It had a capacity of 23,000 and their best attendance year was in 1951 when their average attendance was 16,000. Even in 1955 when they won the WS, their attendance was only 13,500.

Attendance at the Giants-Nats game is reported at 17K. LOL. There couldn't been 5K at the game when it started. This must include the hot dog vendors and the

I think MLB fudges the attendance numbers. Calculating the number of tickets sold rather than bodies in the seats. LA fans are also notorious for late arrivals. And on a weekday evening in LA, good luck getting to the stadium in that traffic.

The Phillies have good broadcasters, on radio, even better because they're not former Yankees or Mets players.
I don't read any sports articles, so I can't name one male sports reporter, let alone a female one. Well, maybe Jayson Stark, who wrote for the Philadelphia Inquirer, before he went national. He wrote a column focused on Philadelphia sports, naturally enough. I used to read his columns back then.
I abandoned newspapers long ago, as obsolete, too expensive for the minimal benefit received, and generally biased in their reporting.

I think you are right, I have been to many Giants games that are listed as sellouts yet all you need to do is look around the stadium and you can see massive swaths of empty seats, from start the start of the game to the finish.

The tightest race in the National League is the West.

I would have never guessed that a couple of months ago.

My bet is that as the Dodgers get healthy they will pull away again. .

The way the Phillies are playing the East will tighten up. Brewers, Padres, Diamondbacks playing very well. Atlanta broke a 6 game losing streak last night. The Mets have stepped up their game.

The Mets have been on a killer west coast swing and haven’t played that well. They have been shut out the last two games. Hopefully they can win today to have a 500 road trip.
