I am continuing a conversation that was going on in a K&C thread: http://www.treefrogtreasures.com/fo...iquing-or-mocking-a-set-you-don-t-like/page11

I think it's worthy of a wider conversation.

Waynpoo's comment that this should not apply to movie and song title threads is very appropriate. We'll find a way to exclude those.

We have had many, many conversations with people over the years with one common theme, "Why does X (and there have been many versions of X) dominate all the discussion? We can't seem to have any conversation without having to enter into a lengthy debate with them...or their posts fill up the space so nobody else's get noticed"...or something similar. The result is that people get exasperated and simply give up posting, leaving it to 'a few' to carry on the conversation.

People seem to be getting hung up on the '8 posts a day' concept (it's actually 8.3 ^&grin). The vast, vast majority of forum members don't come anywhere near this post count. While 8 may not seem like much for one day, that assumes that you post those 8 every day for the entire 30. Frequently people take a day away...meaning they have more to post in the future.

The 250 number is not set in stone, but it's where we will be starting in a few weeks.

Again, only a tiny percentage of people will find this restrictive. The rest will find their voices more easily heard.

That is the nature of conversation on Forums. It's people talking to each other but sometimes in unanticipated ways. When you have a forum open to everyone you will get many different kinds of people, some you will like and some you won't. That's the nature of life in general. Sometimes the discussions get heated. That is also what happens in our lives. Conversations evolve in an organic way. What you're doing is imposing an artificial barrier. It's basically censorship to get the conversation you like, with a minimum of fuss. When I was a mod and the only one and I didnt always like how a conversation was going, well I had to deal with it.

Unfortunately, life is not neat. It is complicated. Why should this place be any different.

With respect to Wayne's concern, which is a real one, if you have an exception for it and one for Show photos, this policy is starting to get more holes than Swiss cheese. If so why have a policy.

I'd like to see a poll what members think; one poll for whether there should be a policy and if the answer is yes, another poll as to whether 250 is the right number.

I am a bit so-so on the new policy. As long as we exclude shows, etc... I think I am ok with this. Also, maybe exclude diorama posts, as those can have many pictures.

Yes, Brad and Sandor are both correct. 1. a poll would be a fair way to go. 2. And dios should be not be included in any count, just a small point re dios - as everyone knows I do a lot of them and get many kind words of praise and feedback which I like to answer as I believe it is rude not to thank those that take time to respond to my Dios, this can add up to a few posts, so is it fair that the count would include these thank you posts?
Wayne.

The other option is of course even more problematic - let every one post however much they want and encourage the mods to be far more proactive in deleting comments. Does anyone want to see a page with multiple deletions every time they open a new thread?

It is a privately run Forum, so the idea of ceding control via a poll is likewise based on a flawed premise. What happens on the Forum does not in a public sense reflect on me. Jack is not my name and only three or four members know my correct/full name and/or place of work. Treefrog put their name to this Forum - what goes on here reflects directly on them. I do not drink, so if you are at a party at my place, you can drink by all means, but there is no vomiting in my front garden for all the neighbours to see. My place, my rules. If you wish to exercise that right, go somewhere else. Treffrog Forum, Treefrog rules.

I think we should give the new policy a go and if it needs refining, that does not mean that the policy is flawed, just that the owners are open to tweaking it to ensure that it works as it should. If there is any anger, it is not the people trying to offer solutions that should bear responsibility. It is those who have left them feeling compelled to further control discussions who should take ownership, but as is the nature of things, no one is lining up to do that.

Am I correct in my assumption that this is trying to improve QUALITY by imposing restrictions on QUANTITY? The petty, childish nature of some comments in some of the threads do bemuse and sadden me, but will it work? Who knows

Well this is going to be about as much a surprise as tomorrow being Tuesday, but the new policy is bad news for me I'm afraid. I know I'm in a minority in how often I post, but its going to spoil my enjoyment of the forum a great deal. Dispatches is the obvious area where I personally will be hit hard. Its my own particular favourite part of the forum and it then spills into other threads that branch out from it. I've always enjoyed the discussion and debates that are formed in the days after the first each month and very much enjoy putting up pics, engaging with other members in what they like/don't like etc. Along with Dispatches if I should then put up a dio/scene/ historical discussion thread then as my American friends might say ' forget about it', my 250 will be gone in a flash leaving me locked out and unable to post. The very fact that we will have to be guarded about how often we post will just kill the spontaneity in my view, humour, birthday wishes, comments on other dio's will all be curtailed, for what purpose?

How about if there are complaints of someone dominating a thread the mods could ask the person if they'd mind stepping back for a day or two, if they refuse then maybe they could be locked out of that thread as happens now and again. Speaking for myself if a mod wrote and said ' Rob can you give it a rest from so many posts in one thread' I would hope I would be obliging enough to comply with that.

I know as a prolific poster I am a lone voice here, but I feel this is a policy that will spoil my enjoyment of this forum.

Rob, You have some great points made here.It really looks as though Treefrog has gotten fed up to their ears with what has transpired lately on the forum.
Too bad things have all come to this.

Rob, couldn't agree more, I don't think this new policy has been properly thought through, as I believe it will result in just what you say.
Wayne.

Why not just ban Mitch who this policy is probably directed against. Or Bayern who posts as much. Or Rob who contributes too much. Then it won't be necessary to start making exceptions until the forum is operating like the Euro and we will need a manual to post. I still don't see any valid reason for the policy - especially one which will affect less than 10 people. Unless there is a hidden agenda. But I think the idea came from the bible (Tower of Babel). I think I'll go back and re-read it and refresh my memory as to how it turns out. Not too good as I remember.

Terry

Cheers Terry. But, as is always the case its easy to turn to a scapegoat and, often soothes the conscious of those whose hands are as dirty but, everyone who has argued made snide rude comments, made sure people are wound up and a variety of other things is as equally guilty. Its not a new phenomenon The rotten apple in the otherwise good barrel is flawed and has been shown many times.

I agree it won't work but, if you think banning people ends rancour then look back it does not.
Mitch

I wasn't going to say this but since Terry has this policy is apparently directed at Mitch. You are perceived as argumentative and contrary. Yes, this a forum for expressing opinions but not to the point of over monopolization or to where Shannon or Pete, in their reasonable judgment, believe continuing the present state of affairs would not be in their interest (particularly as they are paying the freight). Regardless of whether this policy exists, a little self moderation wouldn't hurt.

"1) Encourage much longer posts to make them worthwhile. No more posts that just say "nice dio" "

Nice rule!

Sorry Mitch - I was being sarcastic - not suggesting that you or anyone else be banned from posting. :redface2: And it seems you are not the only prolific poster there are complaints about.

Terry

Yes Mitch, if you are the subject you are not alone, I understand there has been complaints about my posting too.

I've always thought the mods do a good job here and its a very important job too and I've tried to support them where possible. But now I'm to be told how often I can post and when. I will no longer be able to just post dio's, show reports, or just indulge in discussions with friends without the ridiculous stop start and frustration of not being able to join in for a day or more, it seems those who do not set out to cause trouble are to be penalized because action is not taken against those do. Yes I fully understand I'm a prolific poster and this may annoy some people, but I do not believe I shout people down or invade their threads and bait them. The idea that we cannot just enjoy a broad sweep of the forum any longer for fear of being locked out again is totally at odds with the atmosphere and enjoyment of this forum, myself and many others have I think its fair to say contributed a great deal to the popularity of this forum over the years and have initiated many debates and conversations and now we are being told sorry we are not going to crack down on the troublemakers so get lost for a while. Nope, sorry guys its not for me.
