Oz - Thanks for the Angels, I had never heard of them I am afraid.

Matt - you quiet jazz fan you. Like you I like melodic jazz, this is great - I have not listened to him before. I might post some melodic jazz sometime, but your last post reminded me of this.

At the time and since - it was one of the best twin rock guitar solos I can ever remember. Tragic loss.

The Angels are still touring Kev, albeit with a few member changes, so many great musicians seem to pass early in their life, sometimes due to their addictive lifestyle sadly.

Yes, liking Jazz was a surprise to me as well, something to do with getting older I guess, I'll be buying antique furniture next

Matt - I have not listened much to Coltrane and not heard of Grant Green, so thanks for sharing these, they are lovely tracks with great playing.

I just love a good melody and solos that enhance the music and not ruin it by 'going off on one'. I was weaned on big band jazz, so I also appreciate a tight band.

Stan Kenton was a bandleader that was always keen to innovate and towards the end of his life exerimented with time (i.e. not just 3/4 or 4/4 time). As long as it was a good tune I liked it. Saw the band a few times before he passed, fantastic concerts all of them.

On another note, John Coltrane's 'After the Rain' reminded me of 'Rain' from the Xbox Halo 3 ODST game. I may have mentioned I spent many hours playing the various Halo games, some great memories playing against my sons as well some very immersive solo games. Halo 3 ODST was perhaps the most lonely and melancholic of the series, over 8 hours of solo exploration of a battle ravaged city at night, encountering danger and surprise at every turn.

Halo 3 ODST had an incredible soundtrack, mostly Blues/Jazz that increased the loneliness, sounds depressing but it remains one of the best games from a hugely popular franchise.

The soundtrack is good enough to listen to and I can imagine it may affect the mood, but it is not probably likely to distract you from actually playing the game - a tricky balance for the game makers I would imagine.

I'm not surprised you haven't played any Halo games Kev, they are First Person Shooter games, mainly developed for Preteen and Teenagers plus the occassional Nerdy Sci Fi guys like me, I absolutely loved the games, some more than others. Marty O'Donnell composed most of the Soundtracks for the Halo games, imo the soundtrack adds a lot to the game play, same as Movies, the tunes are of course more dramatic in the combat sections of the games.

Sixteen men swinging can make a lot of noise! (So can rock bands?)

I don't like all of his stuff but the Album 'Kind of Blue', by Miles Davies is reportedly voted best jazz album ever.
