I suspect that if it was a Brit or GI it wouldn't sell very well, at least in GB or the US :)

Yes i guess your right Oz,it probably wouldn't sell. However i still wouldn't have a problem with it,War as they say is Hell.

I always took it that that set showed 2 GIs coming up to a "Dead" german soldier- I didn't take it that they had shot him when he was dead though.
Hmmm. Interesting thoughts on the set though.

No i hadn't thought of it like that either until this thread.I like it,its a human moement in War.(if that doesn't sound to wishy washy!)

Imo the set represents two GI's concerned if a German is dead or just pretending, and one of them suggests the other shoots him to make sure. I was just wondering what a coroner would make of those powder burns.

Dr Quincy is in the house!:D (no one will believe you to start with Oz,but your persistance will pay off in the end,you must have 24hrs to crack the case!)

Or maybe he is placing his foot on the german to see if he is alive and is just holding his BAR in his hand

I happen to agree with Oz on this one. If he is just stepping on him to see if he is alive, why is the set called "Just make sure he's dead." The title is probably unfortunate because it brings to mind the shooting of wounded soldiers which we know has happened in history and, unfortunately, will probably continue throughout history as long as there is military conflict.

That was the take on I had on the set as well, though after reading eveyone's posts, especially Oz's I can see their point as well.

This does bring up an interesting topic though- there is that weird time in war where you come across the body or two in an unusual place- a lot of war flicks illustrate this as well- Enemy at the Gates, The Big Red One, several BW films. This sort of thing does happen. In fact, every troop going through basic training is teamed with a buddy and taught the "Army" way on how to properly handle a face down corpse.

One trooper stands about 10-15 feet away with their rifle trained on the soldier. The other, man this sounds awful, sort of mounts him from behind :eek: by placing his feet on the insides of his thighs and places his arms under the opposing soldiers. The trooper then rolls to one side using the "Dead" soldiers body to act as a shield. I always got a kick out of the fact that if I was asked to go "mount" a dead trooper, there is no way his body was going to shield me from a grenade explosion.

But yeah, this is SOP for the Army and Marines, probably military wide.

Of course there are many well documented incidents of Germans pretending to be dead in order to launch a surprise attack (ww1 and ww2).So for me this German is dead but the GI's are just making sure. Its another of those sets that leave you to make up your own mind about whats going on.

I can't see that you've upset anyone Chris?

Rob

I am ashamed to say there are people who take things too seriously ;)

Chris you have been a great addition to the forum and I personally look forward to meeting you in person at Gettysburg. :)

And I will freely admit that person was myself- I clearly missed the point and took it all the wrong way-

I look forward to the Gettysburg event and meeting you as well- the charge we lead onto that town will be unlike anything ever seen there since a man named Pickett led his famous one!! :D

They want to check if he is alive so they can take him to a hospital and nurse him back to health:D

Hi Rob, if there are many well documented cases of this happening, can you just give us three of them?

The Jerry's tried it on Lee Marvin and his boys there in "The Big Red One" -fortunately ole Lee wasn't getting caught flat footed and knifed the lot of em.

It has been a while since I've watched Band of Brothers but I do recall some scenes during the Bulge where it was similar- Jerry's hiding in the snow, burying themselves, etc- can't quite recall a "dead" soldier lying in wait though.

I would have to think if this occurred in a snowy environment like the Ardennes, was at that time, then there would be some surrounding red splotches on the ground or other disturbance to alert an aware trooper if he was being duped or not.

Chris

Dont forget that Sgt. Rock and Easy Company always had to shoot those German SS troops who tried to pull that all the time from Normandy to Berlin.

Man - Sgt. Rock made sure each one was dead. ;)

I think Oz was asking for documented examples from real life not the movies.;)

But if I was in a war I'd probably shoot every corpse I came across too before I got too close.

Oooooh now your putting me on the spot Oz!(you weren't meant to ask that:D).Well i have certainly read of it happening in WW1 it was possibly at Vimy ridge with the Canadians.I am sure i have read other instances but as i have no proof at the moement i humbly throw myself at the forums mercy for speaking without proof positive.I do believe it happened but i am in the stickest situation since sticky the stick insect got stuck on a sticky bun.!

However if i come across said events I SHALL RETURN:D
