Hi Guys,

In these difficult and troubling times we all have to do things to keep ourselves sane and our minds occupied and away from all the gloom ‘n’ doom of this bloody Coronavirus... Covid 19... Kung Flu... call it what you like.

Over the recent Easter weekend I decided to get some of my own toy soldier collection off and out of the display cabinet and onto our dining room table at home in order to clean it, count it and take a few pix...

My inspiration is (or was) the world famous ‘Edinburgh Military Tattoo’ which has been held annually in Scotland’s capital city since 1947. Alas the upcoming Tattoo has been another casualty of this pandemic we are all suffering from.

Anyway, the Tattoo normally takes place on the esplanade of Edinburgh’s magnificent castle with the main castle gate and its battlements as a backdrop.

Every year military units and bands from all over Britain and the Commonwealth as well as further afield journey to Edinburgh to take part.

A major highlight for me and many others is the massed Pipes & Drums with some of the most famous regiments in the world coming together to make a stupendous and colourful spectacle.

There is something stirring and almost margical to see and hear hundreds of pipers and drummers in full highland military regalia marching and playing some famous Scottish tunes.

So, here is my little tribute in miniature to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

On my parade are 305 figures from some fine old Scottish Regiments... Now, alas all amalgamated.
Marching and playing here are the following bands and colour parties:

MAIN CENTRE COLUMN

2nd Btn. The Black Watch Pipes & Drums
1st Btn. King’s Own Scottish Borderers Colour Party
1st Btn. Royal Scots Fusiliers Military Band
Royal Air Force, Leuchars, Pipes & Drums

1st Btn. Scots Guards Pipes & Drums

RIGHT CENTRE COLUMN

1st Btn. The Black Watch Pipes & Drums
1st Btn. The Black Watch Military Band

ABOUT THE BACKDROP

My own version of the main gate and front battlements of Edinburgh Castle. Built at home... after work and at weekends.

Yep there sure is some eternal essence that stirs the soul and reaches down into your stomach when you hear the Skirl of Bagpipes and beat of drums.

Support Social Distancing! Collect, Display, and Play with Toy Soldiers! Nicely Done Andy!

Awesome! I went to the tattoo as a kid - absolutely loved it and would love to go again someday!

It looks just like the real thing, all you need is the tiered stands and the cheering crowds ......

Well Done,

Wow love it. I had the honor of playing in the tattoo twice,In 2002 and 2004. I would say it is one of the high lights of my military career. From marching on across the draw bridge to playing Black Bear off the parade square down to the buses. I do have one question. How is the castle made? I'm thinking of trying to do the same display.
Cheers
David
Everyone please stay safe and secure.

Thankyou Dave, I’ve always enjoyed designing and building displays and dioramas, first with my brother Gordon and now on my own.

There’s something deeply satisfying about coming up with a 2-dimensional idea or sketch and then translating and transforming it into 3-dimensional reality.

I also believes it adds an extra dimension to the enjoyment of collecting and playing with our toy soldiers.

All the best and...happy building!
Andy.

Love it Andy!!!!!
I'm right there with ya!
Thank you,

Strength & health to you,
Joe
