N.F.L. 21-22 Season (1 Viewer)

The NFL season is longer.

However, the math says week 17 is not to blame for the rash of QB injuries.

Of note, the Niners lost Trey Lance in week 3, Matthew Stafford went down in week 11 and Lamar Jackson and Kyler Murray were hurt in week 14.

On top of that, Denver, New England, New York (Jets), Pittsburgh, Miami, Tennessee, Philadelphia, Washington, Chicago, Carolina, New Orleans and Atlanta have lost their QBs to injury going back to week 2.

Losing Lance was a blessing in disguise. If Purdy continues to develop Lance will be a backup or dealt.

The lateral play against the Raiders was because Jones can't throw the ball down field. They knew he couldn't reach the end zone with his weak arm on a Hail Mary. He is toast with the Pats. One more year and done. Mayfield has his issues, but he is tough and a great arm. No dirty play blocks or crying like a kid when he is injured.

If I'm Kraft and I looked around that stadium and saw all those empty seats on Saturday, when the season is over, I'd tell Belichick "You either hire a real OC, or you're gone."

Oh sorry; Belicheat.

A longer season takes a collective toll. The Rams played a ridiculous 21-games last season and had a very short offseason. Almost every star player is out for extended periods this year.

Let me get this one right. David Carr has left the Raiders after being benched. They still have a chance to make the playoffs but he won't be in uniform for the game. This is the guy they just signed for $120 million but he won't even sit on the bench for the last game. What happens if his replacement is injured? Unbelievable. And the Raiders are allegedly fine with this arrangement.

I'm looking at the teams "still in the hunt" for a playoff spot in the AFC and the NFC, they are all beyond terrible, yet they still have a shot.

A shot to squeak in, then be cannon fodder for the #2 seed in each conference.

Adding a 7th team has been a complete dumpster fire.

And no, none of those teams are going to turn into the 2011 9-7 horseshoe up their ***** Giants and steal a Super Bowl title.

The Bungles (typo intended) played just as many games, yet they have pretty much avoided injuries.

The Niners (with the exception of Lance who played little in 2021) and the Chiefs played 20 games in 2021, but they have avoided major starter injuries.

The Rams got hit by the injury bug, blaming that on an expanded schedule does not add up, especially compared to other equivalent teams.

Jason...aren't the 49ers on their 3rd QB this year?

I wonder if the GMs have learned any lessons from this year?

[h=4]Derek Carr - Three years, $120 million (BENCHED - team 6-9 unlikely to reach playoffs)[/h][h=4]Russell Wilson - Five years, $245 million (plus trade assets) (4-11, coach fired, and no playoffs)[/h][h=4]Aaron Rodgers - Three years, $150 million (MEDIOCRE PLAY - 7-8 questionable playoffs)[/h][h=4]Kyler Murray - Five years, $230 million (INJURED OUT FOR THE SEASON - 4-11 no playoffs)[/h][h=4]Deshaun Watson - Five years, $230 million (plus trade assets) (SUSPENDED AND MEDIOCRE and 5-9 no playoffs)[/h][h=4]Matthew Stafford - Four years, $160 million (2021 trade assets) (INJURED OUT FOR THE SEASON - 5-10 no playoffs)[/h][h=4]Matt Ryan - Colts fully-guaranteed remaining $54 million over two years (plus trade) (MEDIOCRE PLAY and coach fired - 4-10 no playoffs)[/h]

Mike:

True, but none of those injuries are due to the 17 game season or the pre-season or any other false mathematics based on games played.

Lance barely played in 2021 yet he was hurt in week 3. Not week 7, 10 or 17.

Jimmy G did not participate in any OTA’s or pre-season games, he played in 10 games, not 12 etc, and definitely not 17.

The idea that a 17 game season causes injuries is nothing more than an excuse when your favorite team does not win.

On the injury front I can’t help but wonder what the NFLPA and NFL are going to do about concussions.

My neighbor who is a neurosurgeon told me that multi concussions in a life span can lead to long term issues.

He also said that more than 2 concussions within 12 months all but guarantee serious brain/mental damage later in life.

Well in the pleasant irony of the world - Pittsburgh leads another 4th qtr comeback and deflates the Ravens at home. Gotta love karma! Lots of doom and gloom in Baltimore today, but wait.............the latest line - Lamar Jackson will come back and run them to the SB and then the Ravens will pay him 250M guaranteed............................you just can't make it up.

While beating the Ravens is always a Super Bowl win in my house, I will say, somehow the Steelers seem to always snatch defeat from the jaws of victory when it comes to draft picks...............................We literally should be 4 and 12 and a high draft pick, somehow we are 8-8 and I think still an outside chance at the playoffs, I guess you can say Tomlin is a genius in somehow he wins when we should not.

So with that win yesterday, the Patriots are still alive for the 7th and final AFC playoff spot.

They win, they are in.

At 9-8.

They lose and Miami, Tennessee and Pittsburg all lose, they are in.

At 8-9.

That's just all kinds of awesome.

Could be worse, I could be a Dolphins fan;

3-0 "Super Bowl here we come baby!!

3-3 "Just going through a rough patch, we'll be fine once Tua comes back"

8-3 "Super Bowl here we come baby, McDaniels for coach of the year!!"

8-8 "Meh, we're a year away like the past 37 years, we'll be there next year"

McDaniels used to be the flavor of the month; now he's the guy you call when you can't log into your laptop.

There have been 64 different QBs starting games this season. The most in NFL history. Your own Niners have lost two QBs for the season. They don't have to be injured in the 17th game for the longer season to be a factor for player safety. Obviously, the more games played means by necessity the risk of more injuries. Players get injured in games. If they play more of them, more players are injured. The more games that they play from season to season increases the cumulative risk of an injury. NFL careers are already short. It is a violent game. Extra games just add to that problem. No one is making any excuse. It is just a fact borne out by the results.

As if the Broncos didn't have enough problems after the disastrous Russell Wilson trade, there is talk of hiring Jim Harbaugh as the next coach. What a toxic combo. Harbaugh and Wilson. If a player's coach like Pete Carroll couldn't deal with Wilson, then Harbaugh should be fun. "Who will survive and what will be left of them?"

More games played mean more injuries? The Niners might be the worst example of that.

Trey Lance started 4 games in his NFL career out of a possible 19 regular season games before being injured.

Jimmy G has played in 9 games per year on average since he was drafted. He has played in 74 games out of 150 career possible starts. Yet he is constantly injured.

Those numbers do not add up to injuries based on games played.

The same can be said of Zach Wilson, Malik Willis, Jalen Hurts, Justin Herbert, Tua Tagovailoa, Justin Fields, Mike White, Sam Darnold, Kyler Murray and Colt McCoy. Just to name 10 more injured QBs from this season.

None of those QBs has played in more than 57 games in their careers.

Injuries are simply part of the game.

So three 9-8 and one 8-9 team are in the playoffs.

If the 9-8 Dolphins or Seahawks win the Super Bowl, I'll eat my hat, this is the result of expanding the playoffs.

And a 9-8 and 8-9 team are division winners and get to host a playoff game.

Wonderful.

In other news, the golden boy in LA is out, read two stories saying he's 100% going to retire; gee, went a from a wise cracking smart *** during the draft over the Patriots #1 pick to retired after a miserable defense of their super bowl title, arguably the worst one ever.

He'll land some cushy studio job, sit it out for 5 years, find another ideal situation to walk into and go back to coaching.

You are really taking issue with the claim that more games played means more injuries? And the Niners with two QBs out for the season are your example? LOL. I'm not sure what to make of that. Players get injured in games. The more they play, the more players risk being injured. Some might be injured in week one. Some might be injured in week ten. Some might not be injured at all. But it's an indisputable fact that the more times that a player is on field taking hits, the greater the chances they will be injured. Of course there will also be some injuries in football but if you extend the season to 17-games and beyond there are going to be more injuries than in a shorter season.

I doubt McVay retires. It is a genius tactic to float that idea after a 5-12 season, though. He will likely get a multimillion dollar raise instead of being canned like that coach in AZ with a similar record. How are the Pats doing?

His wife is Ukranian; she's got a lot on her plate right now, plus they want to start a family.

How are the Patriots doing? 8-9 and out of the playoffs, which last time I checked is the same place the Rams are, both teams future is not looking very rosy, but I'll gladly take 6 super bowl titles, nothing lasts forever.

Glad to see the Rams stadium is still in use though, even though they are not in it.

Steeler and Patriot fans do not have much to answer for, combined they have 12 championships out of 56.
