N.F.L. 21-22 Season (1 Viewer)

Brad:

I respect your opinion and I did say “most”, not all.

The NFL continues to be at the top of US television sports viewership by a wide margin among other sports.

I think the article is trying to point out how we have all seen our favorite team lose because of bad calls. When that happens fans say they’ll never watch another game.

Yet those same fans all tune in next week, netting the NFL millions in advertising revenue.

The NFL has never tried full time refs so we have no idea how that might change things.

jason

Jason, Tiki Barber, the former Giants RB, co-hosts a radio show on WFAN in NY. Yesterday this came up on the various things that bother him about the NFL today. It’s definitely worth a listen. Tiki isn’t the only former player to complain about the quality of the play; Brady has mentioned it recently.

Brad:

That was a fantastic and informative listen.

Thanks for sharing it, Barber clearly knows the current status of the NFL.

Best,
Jason

Jason, glad you liked it. This isn’t the first time he’s mentuoned that the state of play is unwatchable.

Another weekend of fugly NFL games. The Chargers-Pats game is a horror. Steelers-Cards and Jets-Falcons an unwatchable mess.

The NFC West flexed a little muscle today. The Niners absolutely curb stomped the Eagles. The Rams did the same to the Browns (the ghost of Tom Fears rattled his chains). And even the hapless Cards somehow managed to blow out the Steelers in Pittsburgh.

The 49ers are a wagon when healthy, Mac Jones could light up the NFL with that line, those WR's and TE's and RB's, they demolished the bullyball Iggles, imagine their fat slob head of security got into it with one of the 49er players and led to the player being tossed, what BS that was.

They put up 42 points on both the #1 and #3 team in the NFC, if they stay healthy, they will steamroll to the Super Bowl and take out the Chefs, this ain't Jimy G they'll be facing this time around, their QB is a great game manager and does not make boneheaded throws.

It’s pretty obvious that had Purdy not been hurt they would have gone to the SB last year. Shanahan got lucky with Purdy because he was in love with Trey Lance and it was only injuries to him and a QB he never trusted, Jimmy G, that led him to use Purdy. Sometimes you have to be lucky.

Just like when Bledsoe got hurt and Belicheat stuck a 6th round draft pick in there.

9 superbowls and 6 wins later.......................;).

Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

Not. The Niners had a bye week while the Eagles played three games against the Chiefs, Bills, and Niners in 13 days. Thank the NFL for that win.

More fun with numbers and schedules:

The Niners have beaten the Cowboys, the Jaguars and the Eagles by a combined score of 118-32.

The Eagles played the Bills and Niners at home and they played the Chiefs on an extra day of rest.

The Eagles looked fatigued. The Niners caught a huge break with the schedule. Playoffs are a different deal. Home field will be huge in a Niners-Eagles rematch. The Eagles have a soft schedule after the Cowboys by getting the Giants twice and the hapless Cards. Those should be automatic wins. They are going to end up with at least 13 wins and more likely 14 if they split with the Cowboys and Seachickens. The Niners would need to win out to make up a game.

At least one starting QB was injured and not playing in every NFL game that I saw this weekend. Some ended up with both QBs injured. Flacco started for the Browns. Imagine the situation by the time they have played a full 17-game schedule.

The good news is that the upcoming draft has a lot of QB talent. The D is doing its part.

"With the 6-0 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, the Patriots became the first team in 85 years to lose three consecutive games in which they surrendered 10 or fewer points."

If the Cowboys don’t beat the Eagles, the Eagles will probably get home field but I don’t think that’s a huge concern for SF. SF has one tough game left against the Ravens so 14 wins is likely.

I can't believe the Patriots are beating the Steelers.

This isn't how you tank.

I'm sure this guy is taking this well..................I assume they shipped his family off to some sort of Yinzer safe heaven after this loss.

They actually won.

Unbelievable.

Have to hand it to Tomlin; he knew by losing, it would screw the Patriots out of a top 2 pick/QB for the next 15 years/to further torture the Steelers.

What a Wyle E Coyote super genius that guy is.

Well when you've won as many Super Bowls as he has..................

There is a troll on Boston sports talk radio who hates the Patriots and the Celtics, he's claiming "I'd rather be the Steelers than the Patriots"...........so his cohost says "The Patriots have won 6 Super Bowls in the past 23 years, the Steelers have won 2 in the last 42 years"................so the guy says "Umm...........yeah.............I'd still rather be the Steelers."

What a moron.

I couldn't bear to watch. That must have been a horror show. You have to give Tomlin some credit for being 7-6 with the offense that he has.

I don't have Prime, but lucky me, it was aired locally as is the pattern with these Thursday night games.

Imagine losing to the Cardinals and Patriots in back to back weeks; that's a contractable offence right there, talk about reliving your glory days of the 1960's or whenever they played.

I had zero clue as a kid the Steelers were even in the NFL back then, first I ever heard of them was the immaculate reception, they stunk so bad in the 60's none of their games were ever on TV.

They got shipped off to the AFC like a German general to the Russian front who screwed up.

Honestly, this is the worst Steelers offense I have ever seen. They will be back, just not this year. They have won 6 SB's over time, so consistency since the 70s has certainly been there and typically, they are competitive to watch. This year, not so much. Injuries on D always happen, but with a horrid offense, just no real path to win week in week out. My bet is the 2 active QB's will be gone, Pickett will be on the bench and they will be looking hard. You just can't really win in this league without a world class QB. The 2000 Ravens are about the only team I can think of that did it, but they arguably had a defense reminiscent of the Steel Curtain to do it.

Long story short, I wouldn't trade being a Steelers fan for anything. Yes, the Patriots and Tom Brady run was abnormal and may never happen again. I will take the Steelers consistency of my lifetime (I was born in 1973). I really can't complain.

I do think Tomlin is a great coach, he is just missing some talent pieces right now and I do think he gives too long of a rope to certain assistant coaches, he doesn't make changes quickly. That is good and bad, but Canada was the worst. Todd Haley was a great coach and I do think we would be better with him on offense, but his demeanor, reputation, and relationship with Big Ben did him in. I do think he had outstanding schemes.

All of the above, this year's Steelers are hard to watch, but they did beat Baltimore...............that was the Super Bowl for this year.

Don't give up hope yet George. Here is all that has to happen for the Pats to now reach the playoffs:

  • The Patriots need to win out
    • Their next four games are as follows: v. KC, @ DEN, @ BUF, v. NYJ
  • The Pittsburgh Steelers need to lose out
    • Their next four games: @ IND, v. CIN, @ SEA, @ BAL
  • The Houston Texans need to lose out
    • Their next five games: @ NYJ, @ TEN, v. CLE, v. TEN, @ IND
  • The Bengals need to beat the Steelers in Week 16 and lose the rest of their games
    • Their next five games: v. IND, v. MIN, @ PIT, @ KC, v. CLE
  • The Los Angeles Chargers need to win their next two games against the Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders, then lose to the Bills, Broncos, and Chiefs in the final three weeks
  • The Broncos to lose their next three to the Chargers, Lions, and Patriots, win their Week 17 matchup against the Chargers, then lose to the Raiders in Week 18
  • The Bills to lose to the Chiefs and Cowboys, beat the Chargers, then lose to the Patriots and Dolphins
