N.F.L. Season 2018-19 (1 Viewer)

an odd choice I will admit...

maybe not a SB contender...
but if I were an opposing QB...
I would be worried about playing against Arizona and have that game marked on my calendar...
telling the trainer to warm up the jacuzzi...

Arizona blitzed 38% of the time last year...highest in the NFL...
with Watts in there...well...you can't double team everybody...

Chandler (DE) was injured last year...only had 1 sack...only played 5 games...
healthy in 2019 he had 19...
healthy in 2018 he had 17...
healthy in 2017 he had 13...
Chandler is healthy now...

Reddick (LB) had 12.5 sacks last year...
Gardeck (LB) had 7 sacks last year...

throw in Watts (DE) at 31 years old...
they are gonna punish some QB's next year...

a lot of people believe you win games with defense...
we will see...

[h=1]How J.J. Watt can get better by pairing with Cardinals' Chandler Jones[/h]
https://www.espn.com/blog/arizona-c...tter-by-pairing-with-cardinals-chandler-jones

I was one of those fans who believed Watt when he said he wanted to go to a team that had a legitimate shot at a championship.

I bought in more when the Bills were considered the front runner to sign him, after all they were one win away from a trip to the Super Bowl this year and they are returning all of their key players from that team.

Then Watt goes and signs with Arizona on a 2 year deal. Thus he either believes that within the next 2 years Arizona is going to be a contender (they haven’t made the playoffs since 2015) or he took the money.

That contract is a disaster waiting to happen.

Anyone who says "So and so is going to end up in Green Bay, he'll take less money but has the best shot at getting ring" is out to lunch; most of these guys only care about who's going to pony up the most dough...................is he honestly going to say he went to Arizona as they in his opinion are a Super Bowl contender?

And yeah, I get it, you can't begrudge a guy for taking the most money, blah, blah, blah.............but who's ****ting who.

I'm guessing his wife did not want to end up in Buffalo or Green Bay when they can be sitting at the pool in February. I thought Brady's choice of Tampa was doomed to failure as well. So who knows? It doesn't strike me a decision made on the basis of winning a SB. More like getting out a bad situation to move to vacation land. A bit of a slap in face to Houston who agreed to let him go instead of trading him. I'm sure they could have got a draft pick or two from the Cards. He may be a great guy but if I'm a Houston fan, I'm not happy that he left the team high and dry.

His wife plays professional soccer in Chicago, there were rumors the Bears were in the mix.

Until they weren't.

And yes, I agree with you 100% about Brady; Tampa?

With that bozo of a coach?

Then all the chips fall in line, bingo, presto, a home SB and they're the champs.

Stuff happens, so who knows.............

JJ Watts is on the local sports news here a lot...
he walks like a God around Houston...they really love him...
he was very vocal about his displeasure with the entire organization...

The Texans and him had a pretty public toxic relationship...
he called out his own players for not giving 100%...
he called out the coaches for questionable calls coaching...

Deshaun Wattson is refusing to play next year for the Texans and wants to be traded...
so he's leaving...
and they traded their very best wide receiver Hopkins last year...

I don't blame him for wanting to leave...
Arizona....meh...I dunno...
I'm guessing they will have one of the best pass rushes in the NFL next year...

is that enough...who knows...

I like JJ Watt, I’ll never forget what he did for Houston after Hurricane Harvey.

He could have just sent a check, instead he started a mini foundation that raised over $40 mil.

Beyond that he volunteered and passed out food, water and supplies to the victims of the storm. According to news reports it wasn’t a photo op, he spent hours, day after day hefting cases of water and signing autographs.

I hope he gets his championship, I just don’t think he has much of a chance of getting it in Arizona.

I’d truly like to see Deshaun Watson or Russel Wilson get traded to the Cowboys.

Let’s see either one of them get to Dallas and then demand a say in front office positions like GM, President, Executive Vice President, Director of Player Personnel etc.

Those jobs all belong to a Jones, one way or another.

Jason...
honestly...

I'm really getting tired of Dak's reluctance to sign...
he makes so much money in Dallas...not just his contract...but his endorsements are unparalleled...
biggest part of his income is his endorsements...

I would take Watson or Russell in a heartbeat...
Russell actually has said he wants to play for Dallas...
for what he is asking...
they could get Russel for 3 years...for about the same amount of money Dak is asking for 2 years of service...

he's held the Cowboys hostage for years...
over and over he has been offered a contract that puts him in the top 3 or higher in salary...
but his agent plays hardball and keeps declining the offers...
I honestly think he is worth what he is asking...
but signing him has been a side show circus for coming on 3 years now...

coincidently...
on top of his salary from the Cowboys...
he is in one of the most lucrative markets for tv's endorsements in the NFL...
it's not like the guy has eating Ramen noodles for the last 3 years...

according to ESPN's Adam Schefter...
saying that since 2017...no NFL player has signed more endorsements than him...
since 2019 when he was a rookie making $2 million per year...
he was also cashing in on over $50 million per year in tv endorsements...

some clients...New Era Caps...Beat by Dre Headphones...Campbell's Soup...Tostitos Chips...Pepsi...7-Eleven...Nicholas Air...AT&T...Direct TV...Panini America...

Dallas and the "America's Team" mystique is one of the top markets for commercial endorsements...
Dak should be loaded by now...
the Dallas endorsement market is so big...
he still makes more annually from it...than he does from his projected $37 tag this year...
he would be a fool to leave...but it's looking like a strong possibility...
if they tag him this year...and don't get a contract done...
his next tag would be $57 million per year...
and I'm sure the Cowboys won't pay that one...

Mike:

As usual, great post.

Dak has proven to be good on the field and great off of it. From commercials to community service he is everywhere.

He has never been to a Super Bowl or even an NFC Championship, yet he wants Mahomes, Rodgers and Wilson money. All of those QBs have a Super Bowl win.

Plus, he has played on teams loaded with talent at the skill positions and more importantly, some that many considered to have had the top offensive line in the league. Yet his career playoff record is 1-2.

Jason...

honestly he is not asking for Mahomes money...
and they have already offered him more than Wilson's money...
not sure what Rodger's is asking...

on his contract...
I think his biggest issue is that he only wants 4 years...
while the Cowboys are asking for a 5 year contract...
he wants to renegotiate while he's in his prime when it expires for a new mega deal...

his numbers are great because they have surrounded him with talented offensive players...
arguably the best trio of receivers in the NFL...
Amari Cooper...Cee Dee Lamb and Michael Gallup...
then throw in Zeke...
and granted Zeke wasn't Zeke this year...
as their once great 3 All Star O-lineman were all out with a makeshift O-line that can't block for sheeeet...
but yea...they can score points when Dak is in there...
still they have no defense...

they have not had an above average secondary since Deon Sanders left...
I was a teenager back then...^&grin...
just like when Romo was there...
the Cowboys have to score 35+ points to win a game...
as they give up an average of 30 points per game...
until they get him a defense...
the Cowboys will never go far...

hoping they draft cornerback Patrick Surtain...or any secondary help...
two starters from their stinky secondary are free agents this year...
they might lose them too...

a below average QB can score 30 points per game on their defense 8 days a week...
no matter what Dak does...
they can't win unless they have a semi decent defense...

Mike:

No matter what the numbers are I sincerely hope that Jerry Jones breaks the current state of QB “contracts” by only giving Dak 4 years without a no trade clause.

I put contract in quotes because despite massive money guarantees in those contrasts quarterbacks such as Wilson, Watson and Rodgers continually complain while outright (and subliminally) complain and ask for trades.

Fans deserve better. You agreed to the contract, you got paid, our franchise needs something in return.

-Jason

it's a boatload of money...
but I'm glad it's over for at least the next 4 years...

Cowboys are paying Dak Prescott $160 million for the next 4 years...
$126 million guaranteed...so I hope he stays healthy...^&grin
and they allowed him a no-trade clause...

not Mahomes money...
$45 million per year...for 10 years...(which will probably sound cheap in 10 years)...
and still a pinch ahead of Watson...
but pretty steep...
with no money left for an O-line...and rebuilding a secondary...

so again...
they have a good offense...
but can't stop any average QB in the league...

hope they draft good...
I want one O-lineman...maybe two...
and the rest on cornerbacks/safeties...

hopefully their O-line can stay healthy so Dak can have a little time to pass and Zeke can run the ball effectively...

Dak seems like a very decent guy and he's a good QB, but as someone who is not a Cowboys fan I'm delighted they signed him to a mega deal. It ensures the Cowboys will be mediocre for the foreseeable future. I don't see Dak suddenly elevating his game to carry them to a SB. In fact, last year he looked totally dejected and uninterested even before his injury. I know he had personal issues. The owners and GMs just can't seem to learn the lesson that it's not worth the money to sign a good QB to a long term deal. It always comes back to bite them.

in 2020...when he was in...
I don't think Dak or the offense was the problem...
their losing is on the defense...
in 4 1/2 games he threw for 1,856 yards...
that was on course for a 6,000 yard passing season...
eclipsing Peyton's all time record by a mile...
pretty good for a guy that looked totally dejected and uninterested...

in 2020 the defense gave up 30 points per game...
you really need to score a lot to win when your defense is that bad...
only...
5-11 Detroit...
7-9 Minnesota...
1-15 Jacksonville...
and
8-8 Raiders gave up more...
you don't go to the SB with defenses like that...

in the 5 games Dak played...
the Cowboys scored 163 points...
32.6 points average pergame...
that's a hefty number...

and they only won 2 of those games...
cause in those same 5 games...the defense gave up 180 points...
36 points per game...
I find it hard to blame Dak or the offense for those numbers...

4 years is not considered a long term deal for a 27 year old QB...
that was the whole arguing point of the contract that delayed it so long...
Cowboys wanted him for 5 years...
Dak wanted 4 years...
so he could re-negotiate at 31 years of age in his prime...for a new mega-deal...
Mahomes has a 10 year contract...now that's a long term deal...
and in Mahomes 10th year...$45 million per year will easily be eclipsed by bigger money to another QB...
KC is paying a lot for the 1st 5 years...but getting a much better deal the last 5 as the cap will grow...

but yes...
I agree...
the Cowboys will be mediocre for the foreseeable future...
no matter what you score on offense...
if you can't stop the other team...
you won't go far...

hopefully...as Dak's first year on this new contract...
is only costing $24 million against the 2021 cap...
compared to the $37 million tag if they tagged him...
it will free up $13 million more this year to buy a defense...

I really have no choice but to accept the contract...
roll the dice...
and see how they land...

actually...
I made a mistake...
the way they structured this contract...
it won't free up $13 million for 2021...
it will free up $15.4 million...
saving another $15 million in 2022 on the cap...

The Cowboys painted themselves into a corner via their prior negotiations with quarterback Dak Prescott. The new contract he’ll sign has nevertheless given the Cowboys a path to short-term cap relief.
Based on a $66 million signing bonus spread over five years (the deal has two phony voidable years for cap purposes) and a $9 million base salary in 2021, Prescott’s cap number falls from $37.68 million under the tag to $22.2 million. That’s more than $15.4 million in extra cap space.
With $13.2 million in annual cap charges from the $66 million signing bonus for 2021 through 2025, the cap numbers for the balance of the deal become $33.2 million, $44.2 million, and $47.2 million for 2022, 2023, and 2024, respectively. However, the deal (we’re told) gives the Cowboys the ability to convert pay to a signing bonus at any time. Next year’s $20 million base salary likely will be flipped to a signing bonus, with the 2022 minimum salary of $1.12 million and the $18.88 million balance spread over the five remaining years, reducing the 2022 cap charge from $33.2 million to $18 million.

Those dollars eventually will hit the cap, but they aren’t subject to inflation. As the cap grows and grows, the relative impact of those cap charges shrinks.
Still, a 2022 restructuring will increase the 2024 cap number over $50 million. That makes a new deal after 2023 even more likely.

Mike:

I am no cap expert as I can barely do basic math without a calculator.

However, if it was that easy to circumvent the cap I think every team in the NFL would be re-signing and signing top free agents left and right.

It would essentially make the cap all but irrelevant.

A bit of a surprise that the Pats resigned Cam Newton. I'm guessing they are just erring on the safe side with an experienced backup QB in case they draft a young QB. He seemed like toast, though.

I was wondering the same thing as they got him pretty much on the cheap...
his contract is one year...for $14 million...$6 million of that in incentives...
pretty cheap for a guy that went 7-8 in 15 games under a new system...
but yea...I think they will be looking to draft or trade for that position...
George has got to weigh in on this one...

Signing cam instead of other qbs out there tells me the plan is draft, but not start a young qb

I like the move; last year he had no mini camp, no real training camp, no preseason games, had to learn an entirely new offense, then he got COVID, he also had hot garbage around him at the TE and WR positions, his one decent target Edelman only played four games, their schedule last year was brutal and despite all that, they still won 7 games, had fourth and goal at the 1 in Seattle and Cam fumbled on the 12 as they were driving for the possible winning TD, or at least a tie with a FG vs Buffalo............yeah, I know, if's and but's, but still............

Realistically, what are their options; Spinach chinned 38 year old Fitzpatrick, a tomato can bust in Mariotta, trading for Garappolo who can't stay on the field?

Who knows what will shake out, but they probably are not done at the QB position, we'll see who they draft.

Put some decent talent around the man, let him settle in for a second year in their system and we'll see what develops.

I can't get all worked up over this, I love the guy as a personality, he kept his mouth shut last year and did what he could..........................
