N.F.L. Season 2018-19 (3 Viewers)

Tom...

I saw that obvious false start...everybody in the stadium and watching it on tv saw it...a really, really, really bad call...

more infuriating to me than bad officiating is inconsistent officiating...all the referees seem to interpret the rules differently...

here's a bad call for you....it tops them all...this defies logic and insulted my intelligence...

Dallas/Philly 2 weeks ago...kickoff to Dallas...the returner for Dallas...clearly fumbled the ball before forward progress was stopped or a whistle was blown...and before he was down on the turf...there was no question it was a fumble and they called it a fumble...

then the referees got together and said the 3 Philly players laying on top of the recovered ball...one which stood up with it in his hands...jumping up and down waving it to the crowd to show he had possession...while no Dallas player was near the recovery...

was over ruled with a statement from the officials that they could not see a "clear recovery by Philly"...

"no clear recovery by Philly"...what the heck!!!

how could you not see it...Dallas fumbled...and the only people on top of the fumble were 3 Eagles...

how it was a declared fumble and stayed in possession of Dallas...
I'll never understand...
no Dallas player was near the recovered ball...

Dallas got the ball back...

a unbelievable example of a bad call...

I don't want to cheat to win...I don't want any breaks either...lets call the game right...if my team doesn't deserve to win...they shouldn't...if it takes another 3 minutes to sort it out...lets make the effort to get it right...

still...it's not the bad calls that bug me...they happen...officials blink their eyes just like I do...they can't catch everything...

but like George said several posts back...there is no consistency in the officiating crews...
and I can't even get excited about a play til I know there is no yellow bar at the bottom of the screen indicating a foul on the play...

TD...you want to jump up and beat your chest...but you're too scared to count it until you see no flags...

and don't get me started on late flags...

Mike:

In my opinion your post is an example of something most football fans do not do. It is rare for a fan to acknowledge that his team was the recipient of a bad call. Most of the time fans only complain when the bad call goes against their team but if it benefits them you will not hear one word (I am as guilty of this as anyone).

I don't know what the exact solution is but I do think a start would be for fans to complain about all bad calls, not just the ones that go against them.

Jason that is a problem and the point, there are so many bad calls each week, it is horrendous. Changes outcomes of games even though I am a firm believer in my example that the Steelers still had the opportunity to wipe the field of the Chargers regardless of officiating, problem is now in hindsight, that call is huge!

That's RBL for you.

And since you felllas are talking about it, to me the worst part is it's a penalty for one team but not another.

The Patriots had 14 penalties in the game on Sunday; FOURTEEN.

The Stillers had 4; FOUR.

If you're going to call offensive holding on New England, then fine, it's a penalty, but then you let the Stillers absolutely hook, hold, grag and mug the Patriots and no calls.

If you call it on one team, then call it on the other, be consistent is all, but they can't even do that right.

As already stated, it's like a home plate umpire having a massive strike zone for one team and a postage stamp for the other team; I don't have a problem with an umpire who calls a ball a ball and a strike a strike for both teams, but when one team gets all the calls on the paint and the other team does not, that's not right.

The Patriots absolutely suck on the road this year, worst road record since 2009, they got bounced that year in the first round when the murderer and the Ravens came to town and steamrolled them, I'm looking for the same result this year, they'll probably get the Ravens again and Jackson will run wild on them and they'll lose.

They are what they are; most fans would be thrilled with 11-5, but this team lost to the Lions and the Jaguars on the road, two tire fires, then the Titans where they laid an absolute egg, then the Miracle in Miami, then last week they put up a whopping ten points on that swiss cheese Stillers defense, Dick Lebow is not around anymore with his stupid zone defense that Brady used to shred, I guess Tomlin finally came to his senses and stopped with the zone defense/blitz packages.

One good thing to come out of that loss is Tomlin's job is safe for another year, he sure makes some boneheaded decisions, like going for a 48 yard FG up 4 when his kicker the past few weeks couldn't hit the ocean from the beach, so naturally the stiff drills it right down the pipe. If he had missed that FG, the Patriots with no time outs have a short field and if they scored...……………...wow, he'd be crucified.

And on the second to last play, White was wide open and I mean WIDE OPEN in the flat, yet another blown coverage, but Brady missed it, threw into the end zone towards Gronk and it sailed 4 miles over his head, that was the play where Gronk was interfered with in the end zone; no call.

Whatever.

The dynasty is coming to an end, the rest of the league can now rejoice and their long nightmare is almost over...………………………..

Someone needs to sit me down and splain to me how a defensive tackle gets flagged for holding.

On a running play.

Hello George

Believe it or not- my 11 year old son got flagged for the exact same thing last year at the Pony football level!!! We were all standing on the sidelines going ***???? The ref went over to talk to the head coach about it and I yelled out to him "Andrew- your fine just keep playing" and then I GOT FLAGGED for unsportsmanlike conduct!!! {sm3}{sm3} and took a verbal warning- this was like the first time I ever yelled anything from the sidelines as a coach. But yeah, it is a call- I don't know why they didn't call some of the holds be made as an OT as he was mauling kids like a bear with a tree full of honey but go figure- the Holding call on the DT during a running play seemed more sensible!! LOL {sm3}{sm3}

Your assessment of the game was spot on with mine. For the life of me I have no idea how that ref launches a flag from the nosebleed section to get that DPI call. It boggles the mind. If anyone needs any further evidence as to the disparity between officials and their interpretations of the rules, just listen when these guys in the booth mike up their "officiating" commentator. Most of the time the official in the booth is even at odds with the call on the field.

That being said, what was going through Brady's mind when he launched that ball off the back foot up for grabs will forever puzzle me. He's the GOAT but it just goes to show bad decisions are made by the best of them. I wouldn't lose heart, the Pats got enough going for them to make it back to the big dance this season.

"How about the Cowboys?"

what a joke...they suck!

playing yesterday for the East title...and got shut out...zip...nada...nothing...a goose egg...no pints scored...

if they win the East...they will lose the first playoff game...

Dak has now been sacked an almost league leading 51 times in 13 games...

as a fan...they are HARD TO WATCH!

Oh I wouldn't say that- I LOVE the defense they have put together this season- it gives me hope. I just wish they would send Shawn Lee packing and get it over with already. What I don't understand is how Dallas has one of the best offenses on paper yet they score so little points. The kicking game really isn't the problem- they just cannot seem to punch the ball in. Indy came up with a coverage scheme for Amari Cooper and that worked. It is what it is. This offense kind of reminds me of the offense we had back towards the end of Troy's era- do you remember that Packers game we had to win by kicking 7 field goals??? {sm4}

Holding on a defensive tackle.

Now I've truly seen it all.

Brady pulled a Bledsoe on that one; first and goal on the four and they end up with zero points, that was a killer. They are beyond terrible in the red zone this year too by the way.

And why any team doubles Gronk is beyond my comprehension; he's toast, he's cooked, he's done. No wonder why Belichick tried to trade him to the Lions in the off season, his mantra is get rid of a player a year too soon vs a year too late.

Thank God for Gordon, he's been great and for the love of Christ, why was he not on the field on that last play?

They were screwed from jump there, the Stillers had what, 7 defensive backs in the game, just guard the end zone there.

Can't wait to play them for the 467th year in a row next year in Pittsburg too by the way.

That Miami loss is going to be the killer for them, I had them penciled in for a loss on Sunday anyway, despite that bif oaf Worthlessburger throwing two interceptions.

Beat the next two tomato cans and hope Folsie and the Iggles beat the Texans and they'll back into the #2 seed and get a week off.

Seriously? Big Ben is not at his best this year, but when it counts, he has been pretty good, has he made some bad decisions, sure, but our D can't finish games except in this one. End of day, any given Sunday, you win , you lose. All of the games here on out are going to be tight b/c the playoff situation is close. I would expect Brady to bounce back at home.

And as I said before, the Refs didn't make or break the game. If Brady makes better throws in 2 situations, the Pats win. Same can be said of the Steelers, if Ben throws the ball about an inch higher, we score on the last drive and nail is in coffin. Refs had nothing to do with any of these plays nor the 2 ints Ben threw. It is the game, each week the better team wins, every week that could be a different team

Sorry, but not going to cry for the Pats success or lack thereof recently nor for the Steelers. I can't complain, in my lifetime Pittsburgh as a city has provided a lot of fun wins, same for Boston.

My prediction is any team in the playoff hunt this year can win it, however, couple of advantages may dictate - if the Chiefs or Chargers get home field, both present huge issues for opposing team (Arrowhead is loud and cold and Chargers time zone is a pain), same for the Saints - indoors they are hard to deal with). It will be interesting to see if Houston holds up, same with the Pats, division games are painful, records don't matter, home field will help.

I only saw a few minutes of the Pats-Steelers game but it reminded me of one of those over 50 league games where everyone is out of shape. It looked slow and painful. I was going to complain about the Eagles defender grabbing the Rams receiver in a bear lock on the last play of that game and practically tackling him before the ball got there, but the Rams should have won by three TDs. Can't count on the refs to bail them out. The officiating does influence the game though. I love it when someone says one play doesn't change the outcome in a game decided by one score. Oh well. Onward.

Agreed 100%; one play didn't change the outcome of the Stillers/Patriots game.

By my count, four did.

Onward is right.

If there is a God in heaven, the seeding is Chefs/Patriots/Texans/Steelers/Chargers/Ravens, then after wildcard weekend it's Chefs/Patriots/Texans/Steelers.

I have no doubt the Texans will come here and crap themselves and the Steelers will go to KC and knock of Reid and the Chefs, setting up Patriots/Steelers in
Foxboro.

We'll see how the refs call that one.

Some teams and coaches are playoff underachievers and the Chiefs/Reid fill that bill. The Chargers are a close second. The Steelers/Pats/Broncos/Giants usually perform better in the playoffs. It's inexplicable but a pattern. The Colts, Bears and Cowboys are all playing well down the stretch. Should be interesting. Wide open with the best regular season teams like the Rams, Saints, and Chiefs struggling.

George,
I like your thoughts on the playoffs, but who knows, Steelers have no consistency to make that happen.

But really, c'mon man, 4 calls didn't do anything to the Pats, they got outplayed. Brady was way off for the first time in awhile, they didn't adjust to the double man coverage well and the Steelers made enough offensive plays to win.

And honestly, if either team continues to play like they have been playing as of late, they are both going to be enjoying the playoffs at home or early exits and we will both be watchers from afar!

We'll have to agree to disagree as there were by my count four calls/non calls that directly impacted the outcome of the game, the biggest one was illegal contact in the end zone on Gronkowski on the second to last play of the game, the second biggest was the multiple holding calls on the third down play where the Steelers kept their last drive alive and resulted in a field goal.

At the end of the day, they lost.

As Doug pointed out, the playoffs are a different animal and I have no doubt, as in zero, that the Steelers (or the Ravens for that matter if it comes to that) will go into KC and beat the Chefs, they are 0-6 in their last 6 home playoff games. The Steelers and the Ravens know how to turn it up a notch in the playoffs and coaches like Andy Reid freeze like a deer in headlights come playoff time.

Win your division and a trip to the AFCCG is all but guaranteed...………….bank on it.

Again, we will agree to disagree, if the Pats played better, they would have won, they looked flat a lot of the game and like I said, the Steelers didn't set the world on fire, they just made a few more plays, they had plenty of misses too.

On the Gronk pass, I am not sure anybody but the guy in the first row of the bleachers had a shot at it! ;) It was pretty high and outside.

I think the next game will say a lot about the Steelers, I honestly can see us missing the playoffs, there is just something off about this team.

PS to this thread, It is all in good fun and it is not often I get to rib George! I think Big Ben has beat Tom Brady 3 times in his career!!!!! Good Lord that is lopsided.

Anyhow, I may well be singing the blues next Sunday night, Drew Brees in the dome...................not good for the Steelers.

Agreed, all in good fun; I've said this a million times, sports is the toy box of life, none of this stuff matters at the end of the day...……...during this time of the year, look around you and count your blessings, there are loads of others not as fortunate as many of us, I get reflective this time of year for a number of reasons, Merry Christmas to everyone, enjoy your time with your families and friends, someday all you'll have are memories.

Even though I knew the outcome I thought it would be worth taking the time to watch the Patriots Steelers game (I had to record it). So I watched it last night.

I have a question about Gronkowski. Does anyone know exactly what is wrong with him? Even when he was not double covered he was slower than normal and at times he even had a pronounced limp. On top of that he does not seem to be able to turn his neck? For example he rotates at the hips when he turns to talk to other players/coaches etc. rather than simply turning his head?

His back is luggage.

His knee is junk.

He is probably going to retire at the end of the season.

He's done.

Pretty sad as he's been hurt way too often; a classic example of a player who would be a first ballot HOF lock were it not for his injuries.

A real shame.

Aaaaaand josh Gordon is done!!! It was good while it lasted

Too many demons. Tough upbringing, he belongs in a rehab treatment program, not on a football field.

I wish him nothing but the best.

They wouldn't be in this position if they didn't get cheap on Cooks or Amendola, especially Cooks, what was the point of trading a #1 pick for a guy you only kept for one year.

Boneheaded move right there; sign the guy, don't dick him around.
