Horrendous game. That and the Mets game just made it a perfect night

I was surprised Gonzaga was a 4.5 pt favorite after having trouble with UCLA and Baylor's complete domination of Houston. It's a bit ridiculous many sports writers, including the tv game commentators, blamed the Gonaza/UCLA OT for the Zag's "tired legs." Baylor played their semi-final game the same day. Gonzaga played a total of 5 more minutes than Baylor. That a group of 18-21 yr olds can't recover after two days is a bit suspect IMO.
Mark Few, seems like a nice guy, is the new poster boy for the coach who can't win the big one. The Zags lose their 3 best players, but have the #1 recruit and #1 fwd in the incoming class. Chris

Indiana still stands as the last undefeated champion.

Funny; several talking heads said the close win vs UCLA woke up Gonzaga and now that they have that game behind them, they'll be fine.

Or not.

They played a bunch of tomato cans during the season and had an easy path in their bracket to the final four.

Baylor ran them out of the building, that program has risen from the ashes and their coach accomplished the mission he set out on when they hired him back in 2003.

Very impressive win.

Gonzaga was in trouble no matter what happened in the championship game.

Even if they had gone undefeated people would still say they didn’t deserve it since they are a mid-major.

Interesting discussion in regards to schedules. Gonzaga only played 4 ranked teams during the whole regular season, and none after their 7th game. They played the last 19 games of their schedule against unranked teams. A team like UMd, in the Big 10, played 11 ranked teams, including 10 ranked teams in their last 20 regular season games. Gonzaga carried itself well in the playoffs but one wonders how they would have fared against tougher regular season opponents. -- Al

Great post.

The Big-10 has become the basketball version of the SEC in football.

At the same time most (if not all) mid-major programs have never known the type of continued success that Gonzaga has, despite having the same limitations and schedules.

Nineteen yr old former UK bball player (one and done) Terrence Clarke died in a vehicle accident in California last Thursday. Doing a Tiger Woods imitation, driving 80+ mph in a 40 mph zone, he ran a red light, hit a car, light pole and wall while not wearing a seat belt. Fortunately, the other driver was not injured. Heard the comparison made to Len Bias on the radio. Both died of self-destructive actions. Tragic endings in both cases. Chris

Mark Turgeon resigns from Maryland after 10 seasons. He recruited well but never took the Terps to the next level. Very much like Lefty in that regard. Chris

Bit of a surprise, but UMd was underperforming, so not a complete shock. -- Al

Turgeon, over the past 10 years has won every 2 out of 3 games in his tenure.

Let’s see what is replacement (or more likely replacements) do over the next few years before judging him.

Anyone watching the tournament? Two more #1 seeds, Gonzaga and Arizona, ousted yesterday. Feeling a little sorry for Mark Few. Seems like a decent coach/man but definitely carrying the "can't win the big one" title.

Hoping to see Duke lose last night, almost happened. Krzyzewski was most ungracious when losing his final home game against arch rival UNC. It was great to watch as the team folded in the last 8 min and Coach K's after game tirade. Chris

My picks have been a disaster, the highest remaining seed is #3 Kansas..............A Duke/Kentucky semi final would have been epic, but nope, some team with 17 students at their school screwed that plan up.

No doubt in my mind, as in none, that Duke is going to win this thing.

Wonderful....................

"No doubt in my mind, as in none, that Duke is going to win this thing."Certainly hope not George, but it's starting to shape up that way.BTW, I don't think UK wins another championship with Calipari. But he has a $56M buyout in his contract. The AD is an idiot. Chris

I can’t stand Duke but I give them credit for consistently competing for the college basketball title while being a top 10 school in academics.

Watching St. Peters has been a lot of fun and I give them credit for heart, hustle and great defense. I doubt they can beat North Carolina but hope it will be competitive.
I agree that Duke is the odds on favorite but maybe St. Peters has a "guardian angel!"

Duke is like the Patriots; half the fans hate them with the fire of 10,000 suns, the other half are honks who glommed on and want to see them win.

Anyone who had Kansas, Miami, Houston, Villanova, Saint Peter's, Duke, Arkansas and UNC in the elite 8...................let me know if you have any stock tips. I can see Kansas, maybe Duke, but the rest..........holy smokes.

As college basketball becomes a one and done for top tier talent who commit, play a year and then go into the NBA, the top schools that get the star recruits are in trouble, teams that have middling talent that stick around for four years will do well in the tournament.

Imagine 3 of the top 4 in the final coaches poll are out already.

And yeah, I get it, Saint Peter's is a nice little story, superior guard play will take you a long way, but their coach needs to dial down the bravado, good them and all, but he needs to relax...................a 15 seed has never gotten to the elite 8, so he can stop playing the disrespect card now.

Great post.

I especially like the part about the one and dones.

College is supposed to prepare you for the next level of life and a career except when it comes to sports.

Imagine someone being in medical school who wants to be a surgeon deciding after 1 year they are ready to work at a hospital……..

Well, the tournament comes down to the blue bloods after all, Kansas, Duke, UNC and Villanova. Hoping for Villanova win although a key player is out with an injury.

BTW, St Peters coach, Holloway, may get the Seton Hall HC job. He played there and was an assistant for about 10 yrs. Chris

Yup, it's the blue blood special in the final four; I guess the cream does rise to the top.

And why more teams did not do to Saint Peter's what UNC did is a complete mystery, get the ball down low and take advantage of the height/talent inside vs firing away from the outside..........................they got waxed.

I love when it's a blowout the moronic comments from the guys calling the game "Well they're down 30, but they're not going anywhere".................going where? Walking off the court and saying that's it, we're done, naturally they're "not going anywhere."

Nitwits.

Another favorite of mine, especially in football, is "the team/player bought into the program." What exactly does that mean? Conversely, are they not going to follow the game plan?
