NCAA Basketball 1029 (3 Viewers)

I am following the tournament from a distance.

I am surprised (in a good way) that the PAC-12 has 1/4 of the teams in the Sweet 16.

I also like the fact that the 2 universities with the highest academic rank in this year’s field, UCLA and USC, have made it this far.

Looking fwd to the UCLA/Alabama game. Maybe the best matchup of the Sweet 16. Chris

With Oregon State winning and USC playing Oregon later today, like the Sweet 16, the Elite 8 will be 1/4 PAC-12 teams.

Loyola couldn't shoot. Villanova was a turnover machine, and couldn't shoot. Not a good combination. Chris

UCLA really caught fire before the half. They have been playing lights out. I hate to say it as a USC alum but they look good. Brings back memories from when they dominated in the John Wooden days. Still a lot of basketball to play, but Bama looked shell shocked.

Alabama lost because of a dismal 11-25 from the free throw line, that's strait up butchery.
'
!@#$ing UCLA, great, I was 3-1 yesterday and 2-0 today until that epic gag job to a team that wasn't even ranked coming into the tournament, Alabama was ranked 5th in the nation and 3rd in scoring.

And they lost.

A few observations about yesterday's games. Looks like Gonza probably wins the championship. That's okay, they're a good team. But if they win it all they'll be undefeated. Don't think they deserve that distinction as they don't play anyone of note during the regular season and would probably have a couple of losses in a power conference. The good side of them going undefeated is it will take away some of the laurels of Indiana and Bobby Knight who, to put it politely, is a jerk.

As George mentioned, Alabama lost with poor FT shooting. And Herb Jones, SEC Player of the Year, finished regulation time with 4 pts I think. True, he sat out most of the first half with foul trouble but is pretty much a no show with only 4 pts in second half. He missed critical FT's in the last minute of regulation play.

I've never seen at any level; pro, college, international, high school, junior high school, rec league, pee wee league, a bunch of guys balling at an outdoor court anyone shoot free throws like #1 for Alabama; leans forward and flings the ball at the hoop, the most horrendous form I've ever seen.

And that includes Shaq...............................

I would take SC and the points against the Zags. SC may not win but they are playing at a high level and have steamrolled everyone to this point. I don't think the Zags have been tested. Should be a good game.

So strike that advice. The Zags are schooling SC. I thought that I was watching the Harlem Globetrotters play the Washington Generals in that first half.

I like the way some “new” college basketball fans point how how great it is to see UCLA finally make it to the Final Four.

They are probably the same fans who pointed out that a team from the SEC (Alabama) finally did well in the Tournament by making the Elite 8.

I guess they have never heard of John Wooden or Kentucky?

This should have read “almost making the Elite 8.”

Still remember the Wooden teams, especially the Alcindor years. Loved the 'Game of the Century' in '68 when Elvin Hayes led Houston to a 71-69 home court (Astrodome) win over a UCLA team with an injured Alcindor. They had a rematch in the NCAA tournament a little later, when Alcindor was healthy, and it was no contest with UCLA winning by a 101-69 score. I can see in my mind's eye the beautiful, arching, corner shots that UCLA's Lynn Shackelford specialized in. Great times for college ball. -- Al

Well I'm out of my NCAA pool.

Thanks to UCLA, an unranked team that won a play in game in OT, now they are going to the final four.

Michigan missed their final 9 shots from the floor, including two wide open threes.

I hag Gonzaga, Michigan, Baylor and Houston going to the final four.

I was the only person in the pool with Houston in the final four, I had them and Michigan in the championship game.

So much for that.

Al:

Great post.

Those Wooden teams will never be replicated.

That Gonzaga UCLA game was fantastic.

Great game. UCLA surprised everyone, Gonzaga was favored by 14. Johnny Juzang is one player Calipari should have kept. He would have been tournament MVP if they had won. Chris

The Gonzaga v UCLA game was a real barn burner and a very entertaining game. Felt bad for the way it ended for UCLA but you just can't let todays long-range snipers get anywhere close enough to launch a shot like that with the game on the line. Should have contested the inbounds pass. That said, it was the best b-ball game I've watched since the famous 'I Hate Christian Lattner' game of '92. -- Al

I can’t claim to have watched every game this year, particularly the Oral Roberts against Ohio State, but yesterday’s game was the best I saw so far. Hopefully, the championship game is a good one.

It will be a game featuring the two best teams in college basketball, something we haven't seen in a long time, hope it's as entertaining as that game last night, incredible finish.
