NCAA Basketball (1 Viewer)

That was an incredible game. One of the best finishes I've seen. Not as good as NC State but pretty darn close. Definitely OMG!

I finished 2nd in our pool by 2 points{eek3} losing to my friend and department head. Best finish I've had since I picked UConn when they won their first title under Calhoun.

The big sound you heard last night was the collective sigh of relief from the NCAA disciplinary board. Now they don't have to worry about vacating a championship for the first time ever. Not that they would do that anyway to UNC. :rolleyes2: Maybe they'll vacate their Final Four appearance, but UNC won't really care about that.

Great finish to the game. Roy must have told his team to not foul and allowed Villinova to get down court uncontested and then an open shot.
Chris

It's great for the Big East to get a shot in the arm after it was re-formed three years ago after it blew up when all the football schools left.

Villanova was clearly the best team, after beating Kansas, Oklahoma and UNC. Doesn't get much harder than that.

Roy should have remembered the Duke/Uk game. Laettner proved that 2 seconds was enough. 4 seconds was plenty of time to launch a viable shot. The inbounds pass should have been hotly contested. :wink2: -- Al

I agree that the inbounds shot should have been contested but I'm sure he told them to make sure not to foul and hoped that good defense would be enough to get them into OT and win the game. I wonder if telling them not to foul was the best advise, sort of like a manager telling the pitcher to get a batter out but not give him anything good to hit. He was in a difficult position too much time but not enough time for UNC to make a basket.

Trust me when I say that moment is seared into the memory of every Cats fan. {eek3} And it's re-played ENDLESSLY on ESPN. :rolleyes2: Chris

I have 5 all-time favorite college basketball game memories. All but 1 concern ACC games.
1. NC State beats Phi Slamma Jamma (aka Houston) at the buzzer in 1982 NCAA championship
2. Villanova beats Georgetown in 1985 NCAA championship
3. UMd beats #2 South Carolina 31-30 in OT in the famous stall game in 1971
4. UMd loses to NC State in OT 103-100 in 1974 in what is considered by many to be the best college game ever played
5. Duke beats KY at the buzzer in OT, 104-103, in 1992 in the famous "I hate Christian Laettner" game, East Regional Final
Painful memories in a couple of them, but they were spectacular games, all going to the buzzer. #4 would be my #1 if only UMd had won. I root for anyone who plays Georgetown, thus #2, and I root for the ACC otherwise, thus #1, and #5. As a Terp, #3 and #4 are self-explanatory.

Counting last night, in no special order my top memories would be NC State vs Houston, Villanova vs UNC, Villanova versus Georgetown, Seton Hall loses to Michigan (from the losing end, sadly), NC beats Georgetown, ND beats UCLA to end winning streak and, of course, George Washington winning this year's NIT. Oh, also UConn's first title in 1999 over Duke.

Not sure this is a memory per se but in 1985 three of the four teams in the Final Four were from the Big East, Georgetown, Villanova, St. Johns and Memphis State. That was a heck of an accomplishment.

Although not an actual game, my favorite tournament memory is from 1990 when Loyola Marymount's Bo Kimble (who is right-handed) shot his first free throw of each game left-handed in memory of his teammate Hank Gathers (who was left handed). A few weeks prior Gathers had passed away during a game at the WCC tournament due to a heart condition.

I was at Cole Field House for #3. Best sports memory ever. Chris

Chris, I was going to go to the game but got held up at work and had to settle for TV. It put Terp b-ball on the map and made Jim "Bozo" O'Brien a household name in this area. Great, great game. -- Al

Bad night for UMd basketball. Robert Carter announced he was declaring for the draft the other day and today Milo Trimble and Diamond Stone also indicated they are declaring as well. Stone is hiring an agent, Trimble is not. With Layman and Sulaimon graduating, that wipes out this year's starting 5. Oh boy, another rebuilding year in the offing.:rolleyes2: -- Al

All expected losses Al. Trimble might be wavering as he is not a first round pick in the last mock draft I saw. But, he has to wonder what kind of yr he would have if he returned with the loss of talent at every other position. That's why I said Terps would have to make a tournament run this yr if it were to happen. And they fell far short, again.:rolleyes2: With Stone the possible exception, the players you listed should have good careers in Europe or China. ^&grin Chris

I think George alluded to this your last sentence earlier in this thread. The cause of the watered down talent in the NBA can be traced back to players leaving college early. This is a prime example of that. If this group stayed a few more years they would be considered solid pro prospects if not potential superstars.

The NCAA has sent its Amended Notification of Allegations to UNC, which does NOT list the football and men's basketball teams in the investigation! UNC gets a pass apparently for academic fraud that goes back 20 yrs, to include Dean Smith's tenure. UofL, Syracuse, Michigan, OSU, FSU, UCLA, and NC State, among others, didn't get the same treatment for what were much less transgressions in some cases.

ESPN article lists, in their opinion, the best 25 men's bball programs of the 21st century. MD Terps at #20. Pittsburgh at #12. ^&confuse Why? And Kansas at #1, over Duke. :rolleyes2: Not a DUke fan, but really think they should be #1. Now pls excuse me, I have to leave as I'm going to be sick after that statement. {eek3} Chris

GW has fired its coach, Mike Lonerga, for abuse of the players. GW won its first NIT in 2016. There have been rumblings about this problem for awhile.
