Sarkisian has said that in order to improve their playoff chances Texas will look to schedule less competitive non-conference opponents.Playoff rankings are out. Forget the Longhorns for a moment, their loss to Florida is really what is hurting the most. That said, legit 2 teams will make it who will be cannon fodder for Round 1. Next issue - what happens if Indiana gets destroyed by tOSU? What happens if Alabama gets destroyed by Georgia? (or even vice versa)? Is the committee all of a sudden going to say the conference championship games don't mean anything? What happens if Texas Tech loses? Can you believe Duke or VA is actually going to get in? Holy crap, what a crapshow. I can make a myriad of arguments regarding Texas and other teams that deserve to be there more than what will end up there. This system is flawed. Final question, if going purely on records, shouldn't Miami be in Notre Dame's place.....................Miami beat Notre Dame. Seriously, what a farce.
Truthfully, for me Texas screwed up and only played well in the "big" games. The loss to Florida is the death knell. Texas outgained Ohio St. but Ohio St played a calm controlled game, they won. Texas gave Georgia a run to the early 4th, then a myriad of mistakes and great plays by Georgia ruled the day, again a super good team. Texas beat 3 top 10 (at the time) teams in fairly convincing fashion in all 3 games. BUT, they shot themselves in the foot in a literal implosion to Florida, a sub par team with decent talent by 8 pts. Again, I am making the case for Texas, but there are other 3 loss teams that are better than the top 12 and 2 conf champs. Mother of God, Virginia or Duke and Tulane will make the playoff this year, what is wrong with that picture??????????????
There are 2 huge problems with that.
First UT’s schedule is set through 2029.
Second whoever you schedule for 2030 might seem weak now, but in 4-5 years they might be juggernauts.
For example, back in 2018 when Texas scheduled their games against Ohio State the Buckeyes were mediocre at best.
