My son's a 49er fan and says he's number 2 in the depth chart. He told me that he has no football experience and since my son knows football and loves the 49ers I assume he's correct. He's excited about the kid but, again, I told him, it's only pre-season. In pre-season, in the first three games the regulars play a few series and then the players who hope to make the team play the rest. In the fourth game, the regulars do not play.
It could be a nice story but I think it's too early to get excited. If he makes the team, then I'll be interested to see what he can do.
Brad and Jason,
As you say early days and being on and doing well in the pre-season team not the same as making final team and regular games during the season.
There are many aspects that make this an interesting sport story (ie. his lifelong ambition, big pay cut, Aussie, relative old age, 27, to start, no previous NFL background etc). Obviously
NFL not a sport played here except at amateur level. However Hayne long been interested in the NFL.
You mentioned his lack of experience. Whilst it is true he has no NFL experience his Rugby League experience is as close as you could get to NFL but in another sport. The ball even looks the same. He has played top level sport at Club (196 games) , State (20), and International level (12). Most of the time he has played at full back. That position is the main catcher of the team. Teams get six plays and usually on the 6th they will kick long to gain ground. The catch is usually taken under pressure as the opposition try to tackle the catcher before he can run the ball. Fullback then runs forward to gain as much ground as possible (they can also pass behind). Hayne always been known as a fast runner who has a brilliant ability to sidestep and accelerate away from opponents. Although his club team not that good he often carried the team to win.
No idea of the stats but I would guess a League fullback would receive more kicks than the same position in NFL. Any Aussie members who have watched both know if my guess is right ? Wayne WA I know follows NFL but not sure if he follows League that much.
This news article today assesses "The key attributes that make Jarryd Hayne ideally suited to NFL" with a good graphic and some interesting comments, much like yours, below from an Aussie NFL fan living in USA. Basically the story says if any Aussie can make it direct from League to NFL then it would be Hayne.

However as you guys say he needs to make it into the team and get the results there.
The coverage of this story here is huge. One story today says a main TV channel (7) negotiating with NFL to show all SF games (presumably on condition he makes the team). Another today mentioned Nike USA about to start mass producing his SF shirt and if that happens I guess will be widely on sale here.
I have never watched a complete NFL game but if he is playing and it is on TV here I will watch it just because I want to see him do well. If he does make the team I think SF going to notice a lot of local California based Aussies suddenly turning up to games and I would not be surprised if the Aussie actor group such as Russell Crowe (he owns a League team), Hugh Jackman, Simon Baker etc start to suddenly support SF.
I hope he keeps a level head and does not get injured as want to see him do well.
