NFL 2015 Season (2 Viewers)

That turned out to be a rather entertaining game. Cowboys are right back in it and have the best divisional record of all four teams.

Just amazing; if they somehow, someway manage to win the division and the Patriots don't make it to the Super Bowl, I'm hoping Dallas does and then they win it.

It would be the most incredible sports story in a long, long time, maybe ever...........

There is a certain logic in picking against the Redskins simply on the basis that they have not won 2 games in a row all season. They won last week, so this week...:wink2: -- Al
Told ya'll. Two shots at winning inside the last 2 minutes and they still managed to lose. Another shoulda, coulda, woulda game for the Redskins. Typical. Now there is a 3 way tie for 1st place in the NFC LEast, the NFL's most exciting division.:rolleyes2:{eek3}^&grin -- Al

I don't think you can really say one team deserved to lose or one deserved to win; one just persevered and you have to give Bailey credit for making the FG (unlike the Giants kicker, who didn't).

here's the way I see it...

while I'm delighted to see a Cowboy's win...without Romo...or any win for that matter...^&grin
especially against the Skins...Eagles or Giants...
their division rivals...

nobody from that division is going anywhere...
no where...
whoever wins that division will be fodder for their first playoff opponent...
except maybe the Giants...

In my opinion...

Philly has been a huge disappointment with their acquisition of last years league leading rusher...
DeMarco Murray...
I don't understand how he can look so bad with them when he looked so good with the Cowboys......
they paid a fortune for him and they don't use him right...
all these sweeps and end arounds...
he's a between the tackle's runner...
I thought they would win the division with a solid ground game...
and maybe they still will...
but Murray's numbers with them are abysmal...

Washington has overachieved...
I'm surprised their record is a good as it is...
but kudos to them...
not insulting their fans...
but I think they have over achieved...

and the Giants have such a bad secondary...
if their pass rush doesn't get you...
they lose in the 4th quarter when their trailing opponent is forced to pass...

still...
NY is my pick to win the series and I think they can be dangerous...
when Eli is sharp...
they are a good team...
they have lost a lot of 4th quarter games this year...

Dallas has...
Green Bay at Green Bay...
Jets at home...
Buffalo at Buffalo...
Washington at home...

they are an AMAZING +15 in turnovers...
it's hard to understand how they even won 4 games...

if not for Sean Lee and Dan Bailey...

they would really be in trouble...

Michael, you hit the nail on the head about the Redskins being overachievers. I don't think anyone in DC actually saw them winning more than 4 games this season with a Qb from nowhere, a hit or miss running game, and a decimated secondary. That they are tied for 1st place, even if it is the NFC LEast, is something DC never expected 12 games into the season. This whole season is turning out to be gravy for us, a roller-coaster ride of inconsistency in a down year for the division. We aren't fooled into thinking it is anything but fortunate circumstance. -- Al

yea...

that would be the Cinderella on steroids story...

If the Giants somehow win this abysmal division (and frankly, at this point, 6 wins might do it, 7 almost certainly will), I wish they would forfeit their playoff game. No one from this pathetic division deserves to go to the playoffs. Today's NFL, with its "parity" (read: "mediocrity") is just killing my interest as a fan. I didn't even check the score on Monday night football, much less watch it. The NFC East, which in the 10 year period from 1986 through 1996 won 7 Super Bowls (the other 3 being won by the 49ers), with the Division Champion winning 14, 13 or 12 games in each of these seasons, has a combined record of 19 and 29! What a bad joke the NFL has become.

Yes, there are some bad divisions, like the NFC East and the AFC South, almost mirror images of each other, but there are some teams that are fun to watch like the Panthers, Bengals, Broncos, Patriots, Seahawks (who seem to have woken up: watch out!), Cardinals and Packers. Should be a fun playoff when we finally get there.

If a team from the East or the South get to the playoffs, I'm sure they'll be happy to be there and if I were a fan of one of those teams, I'd be happy as well. In baseball, the 87 Twins and 06 Cardinals had terrible records (albeit not losing records) but won the WS. I don't think anyone in those cities wanted to forfeit or not participate.

The Redskins will be playing at the Cowboys to close out their seasons in week 17. Watch this game be the one that decides the division.

not trying to be argumentative...

but I don't understand this parity (mediocrity) theme...that seems to be re-hashed every 10 or 15 posts on this thread...

what do you mean?

the draft and the salary cap is designed to make teams somewhat equal...it's designed to level the playing field...

that will never be enough...
there are a lot of other factors that make certain teams good...
coaching...developing...trades...injuries...experience...maturity...penalties...luck...
these another 100 things determine why a team wins...

would you prefer 6 to 8 teams...go 16-0 every year...
while all the other teams go 0-16?

or

would you prefer all the teams records end up 8-8?

what is the opposite of mediocrity for you?

do you hate seeing some teams with really good records and some with really bad records?

I don't understand what would make watching the sport good for you...

you know...

nothing...breeds mediocrity in a team like injuries...

injuries dictate performance...

pick a team...
any team...
take out their starting QB...
take out their star receiver...
take out their star running back...
and what you have left is the second best players on that team...
a pretty mediocre/bad team all the sudden...

as you see the Cowboys as mediocre...I see them as bad...

lose your NFL leading running back in signing...knock out your quarterback with a broken collar bone...knock out your star receiver with a broken foot...lose your shut down corner back before the first game...remove not only your starting running back...back get rid of his replacement too...now what do you have left...not a mediocre team...but a lousy team...still...if by some miracle...they made the playoffs...I would relish that...maybe this is why Jerry Jones has kept Romo off injured reserve...

Tom Brady...(don't get mad George...just an example)...let him lose Edelman...then Amendola...then Gronk...well...you have just created parity/mediocrity...he's not the same Tom Brady without them...and George...I wish them a speedy recovery and a long winning career with NE...

I doubt seriously if you will find one fan...player...owner or coach...of any team...that would relinquish/forfeit his playoff spot because he doesn't feel he belongs there...

2011...the Giants got in the playoffs with a 9-7 record...pretty mediocre by your standards...1 game over 500...they won the wild card...they won their division...they won their conference...then they won the Superbowl...

I don't see mediocrity...I see good and bad...I don't understand what makes this sport un-watchable to you...

Jason...

I hope you are right...

and if it gets down to this...

I bet Tony Romo's broken collar bone...

is gonna be well all the sudden...

Mike:

The Cowboys were smart to not put Romo on the season ending injured reserve list.

Jason...

perhaps...but honestly...

I don't think he's really hurt as much as they say...

he's not wearing a sling now...so is he really hurt at all?

I think they pulled him in the Carolina game to save him for next year....

season pretty much lost...he probably faked the injury...or why risk him...

Mike,

Teams should not be winning divisions with less than 10 wins. That is what I mean by parity equaling mediocrity. Look at the division winners in the 1980's. Nobody was winning divisions with 9-7 or 8-8 records, much less the 7-9 records that will win two divisions this season. I liked football a lot better when fewer teams made the playoffs, and they were all really good. There is not a team in the NFC East that should even be within shouting distance of a playoff spot, much less hosting a playoff game because one of these losers "won" this pathetic Division. And the team I love is tied for first place and (embarrassingly) has as good a chance as any other team in the Division to "win" it. I am done with the NFL this season. I am going to see if I can enjoy watching NHL hockey.

Seems like this problem occurs more and more frequently; 9-7, 8-8, 7-9 teams winning divisions and HOSTING playoff games as a result.

Bottom line is if you win your division, you should make the playoffs, it is what it is.

Beyond that, all you need to do is reseed the teams based on record; this way, a 7-9 division winner gets seeded 6th and goes on the road.

Mike, in 2011, the Giants won the division at 9-7, hosted the pathetic, sad sack Falcons and beat them, then went on the road and played the #1 seed Packers, who coming off the bye laid an egg, you knew it was the Giants day when at the end of the half, Forest Gump Manning heaved a prayer into the end zone, hail Mary special, touchdown Giants.

Then the following week, they played the 49ers, who lost Ted Ginn Jr, their punt returner to an injury the week before and the bozo who took his place muffed not one, but two punts that led to two Giants touchdowns, ballgame, then they played the Patriots in the Super Bowl, minus Gronkowski, who had a high ankle sprain and he played but was nothing more than a decoy and the Giants won the Super Bowl.

They of the sterling 9-7 record, a complete embaressment, but that's the system that is in place and until they fix it, these farces will continue to happen.

George is right, every division should have a winner but not every division winner should host a playoff game.

For me the issue is less about parity and more about the way they came up with so many divisions that it's inevitable that a bad team will get into the playoffs.

If they took away home games for bad division winners (and required a winning record for anyone in the playoffs) we could avoid this mess.

Louis...

I understand your point...
but unless they come up with another format...
somebody has to win the division...
that's inevitable...
whether or not we agree that they should be in the playoffs with a sub par record to the other division teams...
that is a different matter...
I think they should...
and with the current format...
I don't think it's fair...
not to let the division winners in the playoffs...
regardless of record...

I believe most teams draft and build their teams to beat their division rivals...
meaning...
if Rex Ryan is losing 2 games a year to NE's receivers...
year after year after year...
his priority should be to solidify his secondary...
try to beat the guys you play twice a year...
win your division...

and your 10-6 requirement...
that is a pretty hefty percentage...
that's 62.5%...
lots of teams in the 80's actually did win and get into the playoffs with 9-7 and some 8-8 records...

http://www.nfl.com/history/standings/2006

did you know...
if that qualifying percentage of 62.5% was applied in making the baseball playoffs...
not a single team in 2015 would be allowed to play in the playoffs..
not one...
no baseball team won at that percentage...

if you applied it to the 2014 basketball playoffs...
only 7 of the 16 of the teams would have qualified to make the playoffs...

but...
I wouldn't mind consolidating all the divisions into just 2 Conferences...
AFC and NFC...
no more divisions...
no playing the same team twice in regular season...
build your team to beat the masses...not just your division rivals...
anybody vs. anybody...
luck of the draw random schedule...

take the best 6 records of each Conference...
and let the playoffs begin...

and like George says...
for home field advantage...
rank seeds by win loss percentage...
I never liked this current format where a 7-9 division winner should be seeded for home field advantage over an 11-5 wild card...

to sort seeds of equal records...
that can be decided by tie breaker rules...
while I don't think you can deny a division winner with a sub par winning percentage into the playoffs...
I do think they should be seeded according to record to acquire the advantage of home field...
