NFL 2015 Season (2 Viewers)

People tend to suggest reform and voice complaints when their team is in the mix but in an unenviable situation. See 2015 Pirates. However, when the season is over and the picture clear, people move on. When the Pirates, with the second most wins in the NL this year, failed to advance this year past the first round, the fans moaned but the players and coaches said we will just have to be better next year.

In today's paper, the team in the East with the best chance of winning are the Eagles, based on the Times Playoff Simulator, as follows:

Eagles 36%
Redskins 29%
Giants 28%
Cowboys 8%

Seems like this problem occurs more and more frequently; 9-7, 8-8, 7-9 teams winning divisions and HOSTING playoff games as a result.

Bottom line is if you win your division, you should make the playoffs, it is what it is.

Beyond that, all you need to do is reseed the teams based on record; this way, a 7-9 division winner gets seeded 6th and goes on the road.

Mike, in 2011, the Giants won the division at 9-7, hosted the pathetic, sad sack Falcons and beat them, then went on the road and played the #1 seed Packers, who coming off the bye laid an egg, you knew it was the Giants day when at the end of the half, Forest Gump Manning heaved a prayer into the end zone, hail Mary special, touchdown Giants.

Then the following week, they played the 49ers, who lost Ted Ginn Jr, their punt returner to an injury the week before and the bozo who took his place muffed not one, but two punts that led to two Giants touchdowns, ballgame, then they played the Patriots in the Super Bowl, minus Gronkowski, who had a high ankle sprain and he played but was nothing more than a decoy and the Giants won the Super Bowl.

They of the sterling 9-7 record, a complete embaressment, but that's the system that is in place and until they fix it, these farces will continue to happen.

George,

I happen to completely agree with your analysis, and, if you check the posts at the time, I posted that I was embarrassed the Giants won the Division with a 9-7 record and got to host a playoff game. But at least at 9-7 they had a winning record. I have always advocated getting rid of divisional play and having the top teams by record ceded 1-6 in each conference. But certainly if no one in the division can post a winning record, that "division winner" should not be hosting a team with a better record.

Likewise in 2002 when the Patriots were battling the Jets for the division, both sat at 8-7 going into the final week, I too was embarassed that they had a shot to win the division and host a playoff game with a 9-7 record; both teams finished 9-7, but the Jets won the division on a tie breaker.

In the days of old, there were two divisions in each conference, east and west, that was it, now there are four so like as Mike said, you've got four division winners now and two wild cards; guaranteed at some point it will go to four wild cards, so 16 of the 32 teams will make the playoffs.

It's going to happen, mark it down.

In pen.

If it gets to 16 teams in the playoffs, they will probably use the re-seeding option, just like they do in the NHL and NBA.

I believe that under the present system, the owners want to be able to get a home game, if they win the division. Until they re-seed, that's not likely to change.

In 2006 the Giants went to the playoffs with an 8-8 record and I can't recall anyone complaining :wink2:

Brad,
Thanks for pointing that out; if it's all about a division winner getting another home game, then the owners aren't going to change a thing.

For them, it's all about money, not what's best for the game or more importantly, doing what makes sense.

Again, thanks for pointing that out; no sense in harping on the subject as knowing what you told us here, they'll never change the current system. A 5-11 team could win a division, but as long as that team gets an extra home game, ie, extra $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to stick in a billionaire's pocket, the system won't change............

As the late great George Young, GM of the Giants, often said, when they say it's not about the money, it's about the money.

I understand that the NFL needs to have at least one over-hyped game per week and this week is no exception. But the Patriots v. the Texans? 11-2 vs. 6-6? The Texans are a well coached team that is still rebuilding. They are not an elite team yet. Maybe it is because it is the Sunday night game?

Brady trolled both the Broncos and the Eagles on his Facebook the last 2 weeks before each game...

in one he is riding a bronco...in the other...he is training a pet Eagle...

at best...I'm sure it irritated and motivated both teams...

NE lost both games...

perhaps he will post something to give JJ Watts a little extra motivation...

Watt's hand is broken...which is a big plus for NE...

I watched the entire season of Hard Knocks and I still can't tell you who the QB is for Houston? is it Dan Pastorini?

never liked Pastorini...

I saw him almost get in a fight at Gaido's Seafood Restaurant in Galveston...

when he got traded from Houston...before he left town...

some guys at another table that I knew...were needling him through his dinner...

they were wrong for that...

kept hollering across the dining room...

"Goodbye Luv ya blue"...

they were jerks...

and Dan Pastorini...he was pretty big for a QB...

he would have stomped my friends...

oh yea...and Jason...

it's Hoyer...
he's one of those game manager type QB's...
and he has been on a little streak lately...
but that is mostly because they got a heck of a defense and an awesome pass rush...

What happened with Mallett?

Jason...

I honestly don't follow Houston that closely...

I think he got beat out by Hoyer and maybe canned...

I'm not sure...

even though Houston is only 30 minutes from me...

unlike most of my friends here in Texas...

I'm a Cowboy's fan...

The year of pain continues for the Ravens as they lose to Miami 15-13. Another game decided by 8 or fewer points. All 12 of their games, in fact. Rather unbelievable. -- Al
Ravens are having a highly unusual, and rough season. They have played all 12 games with a point differential of 8 or fewer points. In their 4 wins, the winning points have all been scored on the last play of the game. Can anyone say 'heart-attack'?:rolleyes2: -- Al

That Von Miller, what a card.

If the Patriots can get healthy and get Collins and Hightower back on defense and Gronkowski and Edelman back on offense, I'll sign up right now to play Denver again.

In Denver.

Now they are saying Chung and Easley might not play Sunday, one of their best pass rushers and their other starting safety who's been very good this year.

Injuries are one thing, a plague is another.

We'll see if Carolina can get by Seattle and the Cardinals as that's the way things are shaping up right now......................

Glad to see it. I think the best thing that has come out of the AG's actions that we're not inundated with those annoying ads, either on the TV or the radio.

lucky you...

those fantasy football ads kill me...

almost as brain washable as Doritos "Cousin Tim" commercials...

entirely too repetitive...

I watched the Arizona/Minnesota game last night...

I can't remember if the ran their ads or not...

I don't think they did...

but the injunction is only for NY right now...

and maybe Florida...
